Chapter 4: The Secret Between Two Families
The photograph slipped slightly between my fingers.
For a moment, I forgot how to breathe.
I stared at the image.
My father.
Richard.
And standing in the background, younger but unmistakable...
Vanessa’s father.
Thomas Bennett.
The man who had hugged me two hours earlier.
The man who had told me, “Welcome to the family.””
The man whose daughter was standing beside me in a wedding dress.
My entire body went cold.
“No.””
The word escaped my mouth before I even realized I had spoken.
Vanessa looked at me.
“What?””
I couldn’t answer.
Because there was no answer that made sense.
My mother stepped closer.
“Marcus…”
I held up the photograph.
“Why is her father in this picture?””
The question was directed at everyone.
Nobody moved.
Not Richard.
Not the fake mother.
Not Evelyn.
And definitely not Thomas Bennett.
Because suddenly I noticed something.
He was no longer sitting.
He was standing near the back of the room.
Watching.
His face had lost all color.
Vanessa followed my eyes.
“Dad?””
The sound of her voice made the room even heavier.
Thomas slowly stepped forward.
“Vanessa, I can explain.””
I laughed once.
Not because anything was funny.
Because I was exhausted.
Everyone had an explanation.
Everyone had a secret.
Everyone had decided my life was something they could rearrange without asking me.
“Explain what?”” I asked.
My voice echoed through the wedding hall.
“Explain why you’re in a picture with my father?””
Thomas looked at Evelyn.
Then at Richard.
Then at me.
And in that moment, I knew.
He had been afraid of this day.
Maybe not the wedding.
Maybe not losing his daughter.
This.
The truth coming out.
Vanessa looked at her father.
“Dad, what is he talking about?””
Thomas opened his mouth.
Nothing came out.
That was when Vanessa’s expression changed.
She was no longer confused.
She was hurt.
“Dad.””
He finally spoke.
“Marcus, your father and I knew each other a long time ago.””
“Knew each other?””
I looked down at the photograph.
“They’re standing outside the building where my father worked.””
Thomas nodded slowly.
“Yes.””
“And Richard was there.””
Another pause.
“Yes.””
The answer was too easy.
Too calm.
I stepped closer.
“You knew Richard.””
Thomas looked uncomfortable.
“Yes.””
“Then why did nobody tell me?””
Nobody answered.
I turned toward Vanessa.
She looked just as lost as I was.
“I swear I didn’t know,” she said quietly.
I wanted to believe her.
I did.
Because Vanessa had been the one person in the room I thought was real.
But after today, even trust felt dangerous.
Evelyn walked toward us.
“Your father spent his final months trying to uncover what happened inside his company.””
Thomas lowered his eyes.
“Evelyn…”
“No.””
Her voice stopped him.
“For years, I stayed quiet because Daniel asked me to protect Marcus.””
She looked at me.
“But I should have told you the truth sooner.””
My chest tightened.
The truth.
Everyone kept saying that word.
Like truth was something simple.
Like it didn’t destroy everything it touched.
I looked at Thomas.
“What did my father discover?””
Thomas took a deep breath.
“I made mistakes.””
The room went silent.
Not an answer.
Not a denial.
A confession.
Vanessa looked at him.
“Dad, what mistakes?””
Thomas rubbed his face.
“I was struggling back then.””
“With what?””
“Money.””
Richard suddenly interrupted.
“Thomas, stop talking.””
I turned.
There it was again.
That control.
That fear.
Richard wasn’t worried about the wedding anymore.
He was worried about what Thomas might reveal.
I walked toward him.
“You don’t get to tell anyone what to do.””
Richard stared at me.
“You have no idea what you’re dealing with.””
I held his gaze.
“Then tell me.””
He said nothing.
I smiled bitterly.
“That’s what I thought.””
Thomas looked at me.
“Your father and I were partners.””
The room reacted instantly.
Vanessa covered her mouth.
Partners.
That word changed everything.
“My father had a business partner?””
Evelyn nodded.
“Yes.””
“Why didn’t I know?””
“Because after Daniel died, everything changed.””
Thomas looked away.
“My company collapsed.””
Richard scoffed.
“Your company?””
Thomas looked at him.
“You took everything.””
A wave of whispers moved through the guests.
Richard’s expression turned angry.
“Careful.””
“No,” Thomas said.
His voice became stronger.
“I spent twenty years carrying this guilt.””
Vanessa stared at him.
“Guilt for what?””
Thomas looked at his daughter.
And the pain in his eyes was real.
“I knew your father was in danger.””
My heart stopped.
“What?””
Thomas looked at me.
“I knew Richard was stealing from the company.””
The words hit harder than I expected.
“Then why didn’t you tell him?””
Thomas closed his eyes.
“Because I was afraid.””
“Afraid of what?””
He looked at Richard.
“Of becoming his next target.””
Nobody spoke.
The silence was unbearable.
I thought about my father.
A man who trusted people.
A man who believed loyalty mattered.
A man who died believing he had protected his family.
But maybe he had not.
Maybe he had only delayed the damage.
I looked at Evelyn.
“Was Dad’s death really an accident?””
The question changed the room.
My mother’s face collapsed.
Thomas looked down.
Richard became completely still.
And that was enough.
That reaction told me everything.
“You know something,” I whispered.
Richard stepped forward.
“Marcus.””
I ignored him.
“Was my father killed?””
Evelyn’s eyes filled with tears.
“I don’t know.””
The answer hurt.
Because I expected certainty.
I expected someone to finally give me something solid.
Instead, I got another mystery.
“But,” she continued, “your father didn’t believe his accident was random.””
My fingers tightened.
“What did he tell you?””
She looked at me.
“He told me if anything happened to him, I needed to take you and disappear.””
A chill moved through my body.
“Disappear?””
She nodded.
“He knew someone was watching.””
Vanessa stepped closer.
“Marcus…”
I looked at her.
And I hated that I saw fear in her eyes.
Because she was realizing something too.
Our families were connected by something much darker than a wedding.
Thomas reached into his jacket pocket.
He pulled out his phone.
“I have something.””
Richard immediately moved.
“No.””
Thomas stopped.
Everyone noticed.
“What is it?”” I asked.
Thomas looked at Richard.
“A recording.””
The room went silent.
“My father left it with me before he died.””
My heart slammed against my chest.
“You have a recording of my father?””
Thomas nodded.
“He gave it to me the night before the accident.””
Richard’s face changed.
For the first time, he looked truly terrified.
“Thomas, don’t.””
But Thomas was already unlocking his phone.
“I should have played this years ago.””
Vanessa grabbed her father’s arm.
“Dad, what are you doing?””
He looked at her.
“Protecting the truth.””
The wedding hall waited.
The phone screen lit up.
Everyone gathered closer.
Thomas pressed play.
At first, there was only static.
Then a familiar voice filled the room.
My father.
Older.
Tired.
Afraid.
“Thomas... if you’re hearing this, something has gone wrong.””
I covered my mouth.
Hearing his voice after twenty years broke something inside me.
Then my father continued.
“I need you to listen carefully.””
The entire room froze.
“Richard knows about the money.””
Richard took a step backward.
“And worse…”
The recording crackled.
My father’s voice became quieter.
“He knows about my son.””
My blood ran cold.
The guests looked at me.
Vanessa grabbed my hand.
And then my father said the words that changed everything.
“Marcus is not my only child.””
The recording stopped.
No one moved.
No one spoke.
And I felt the entire world disappear beneath my feet.
Because my father had just revealed the one secret nobody had mentioned.
May you like
I had a sibling.
A sibling I never knew existed.
