Chapter 5: The Brother I Never Knew Existed

The recording ended with my father’s voice hanging in the air.

Marcus is not my only child.

Five words.

That was all it took to destroy whatever certainty I had left.

Nobody moved.

The wedding hall that was supposed to celebrate my future had become a place where my past was being dragged into the light, one secret at a time.

I looked at my mother.

She was crying.

Not surprised.

Not confused.

Crying like someone who had been carrying a weight too heavy for too long.

“Mom,” I whispered.

She looked at me.

And I already knew.

She knew.

“You knew,” I said.

Her lips trembled.

“Marcus…”

“You knew I had a sibling?””

The silence answered before she did.

Vanessa looked between us.

“Wait.””

Her voice was barely audible.

“Your mother knew?””

Evelyn closed her eyes.

“I was going to tell you.””

I laughed softly.

Again.

That painful laugh that came when the truth was too unbelievable to accept.

“When?””

My mother looked down.

“When you were ready.””

I stared at her.

“Mom, I was thirty-two years old.””

Tears rolled down her face.

“I know.””

“No.””

My voice cracked.

“You don’t understand. My whole life, I thought I knew where I came from.””

I pointed toward the recording device still in Thomas’s hand.

“And now I find out my father had another child?””

Evelyn stepped toward me.

“Your father loved you.””

“That’s not what I asked.””

The words came out harsher than I intended.

But I was hurting.

And for the first time in my life, I wasn’t hiding it.

“I asked why everyone knew except me.””

Nobody answered.

Because everyone had an excuse.

Everyone had a reason.

Everyone thought they were protecting me.

But nobody had asked what it felt like to be the only person left in the dark.

Vanessa reached for my hand.

I let her.

Because at that moment, she was the only person in the room who was discovering everything at the same time I was.

“Marcus,” she whispered, “who is your sibling?””

My mother looked at Thomas.

That small movement did not escape me.

“What?””

Thomas looked away.

I turned toward him.

“You know.””

He didn’t respond.

“You know who my sibling is.””

Richard suddenly moved toward the exit.

Not quickly.

Not dramatically.

But enough.

Enough for me to notice.

Enough for everyone to notice.

“Where are you going?”” I asked.

Richard stopped.

“I think this wedding has gone far enough.””

I stared at him.

“You knew about this too.””

His jaw tightened.

“I knew your father had secrets.””

“No.””

I stepped closer.

“You knew about my sibling.””

Richard said nothing.

And once again, silence became the loudest answer.

Thomas looked at him.

“You promised Daniel you would never use that information.””

Richard’s face turned toward him.

“You don’t know what you’re talking about.””

Thomas shook his head.

“I know exactly what I’m talking about.””

The room grew tense.

Vanessa looked at her father.

“Dad, what does he mean?””

Thomas swallowed.

“My father and I had a difficult conversation before he died.””

“About what?””

He looked at me.

“About your brother.””

The word felt strange.

Brother.

I had never said it before.

I had never imagined it.

I had grown up believing I was alone.

Every birthday.

Every achievement.

Every difficult moment.

Just me and my mother.

And now I was supposed to accept there had been someone else?

“Where is he?”” I asked.

Nobody answered.

My heart started beating faster.

“Where is my brother?””

Evelyn looked at the floor.

“I don’t know.””

I stared at her.

“You don’t know?””

She shook her head.

“Your father told me his name.””

“What was it?””

Her eyes filled with sadness.

“Jordan.””

The name landed softly.

But it changed everything.

Jordan.

My brother.

A person I had never met.

A person who shared my father’s blood.

A person who might have known a completely different version of our family.

“Why didn’t you find him?””

My mother looked devastated.

“Because I tried.””

“When?””

“After your father died.””

She took a shaky breath.

“Daniel had written down information about him. Where he lived. His mother’s name. Everything.””

“Then what happened?””

Her hands started trembling.

“Someone took it.””

The room went quiet.

I felt a cold wave move through me.

“Someone?””

She looked toward Richard.

I didn’t need her to say the name.

Richard’s expression changed.

“You’re blaming me?””

“You knew where the documents were,” Evelyn said.

Richard laughed bitterly.

“You really think I spent twenty years hiding a child?””

I looked at him.

“Yes.””

The answer surprised him.

Maybe because he expected me to still see him as the man I hired.

The man who made my fake family look complete.

But that man was gone.

I was done protecting people who never protected me.

Richard stared at me.

“You have no idea what your father was involved in.””

“Then tell me.””

He hesitated.

Again.

Always hesitating.

Always knowing more than he admitted.

Thomas stepped forward.

“Daniel discovered Richard wasn’t just stealing money.””

Richard’s face hardened.

“Enough.””

“No,” Thomas said.

“It’s time.””

I looked at Thomas.

“What else?””

Thomas took a breath.

“Richard was using the company to move money for other people.””

A few guests gasped.

Vanessa looked horrified.

“Dad…”

“I didn’t know how deep it went at first.””

Thomas looked ashamed.

“But Daniel found out.””

“And Jordan?””

Thomas looked at me.

“Jordan was connected to it.””

My stomach dropped.

“What does that mean?””

Nobody answered immediately.

Then Evelyn spoke.

“Your father had another family before us.””

I froze.

Not because I didn’t know my father had a past.

Everyone had a past.

But because suddenly I realized my father’s life was much bigger than the small piece I had known.

“He had Jordan with another woman,” Evelyn continued.

Her voice was gentle.

“Before he met me.””

I looked down.

All these years, I had pictured my father as someone simple.

A loving father.

A hard worker.

A man who left too soon.

But now I was seeing the parts of him I had never been allowed to know.

“Did he love Jordan?””

My mother nodded.

“Yes.””

The answer hurt.

Because I wanted to be angry.

I wanted to feel betrayed.

But my father was dead.

And the only thing I felt was sadness.

“He loved both of you.””

I looked at Evelyn.

“Then why did he hide him from me?””

She wiped her tears.

“Because he was trying to protect you.””

“From what?””

She looked at Richard.

“From the same people who destroyed him.””

A phone suddenly rang.

Everyone jumped.

The sound came from the front row.

Richard looked down.

His phone.

He immediately reached for it.

But I saw the screen before he could hide it.

One name.

One name that made my entire body freeze.

Jordan.

Richard was receiving a call from my brother.

I stepped forward.

“Give me the phone.””

Richard pulled it away.

“No.””

The word came too quickly.

Too desperately.

Vanessa looked at him.

“Why would Marcus’s brother be calling you?””

Richard didn’t answer.

I moved closer.

“Who is Jordan?””

Richard stared at me.

And for a second, I thought he might finally tell the truth.

Instead, he pressed the phone screen off.

“He’s not who you think he is.””

My heart pounded.

“What does that mean?””

Richard looked at the doors.

Then back at me.

And his next words changed everything.

“Your brother isn’t missing, Marcus.””

Everyone went silent.

Richard lowered his voice.

“He’s been watching you for years.””

A chill ran through me.

“Why?””

Richard looked at the ring box still sitting in my mother’s hands.

Then at the letter.

Then at me.

“Because he knows the truth about your father’s death.””

The wedding hall doors suddenly opened.

A man stood there.

Older than me.

Same eyes.

Same jawline.

Same look of pain.

Everyone turned.

My mother covered her mouth.

And I knew before anyone spoke.

Because somehow...

I recognized my own face looking back at me.

May you like

The stranger whispered:

“Marcus.””
