Chapter 8: The Mother Hidden From My Memory

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

The wedding hall was so quiet I could hear the faint hum of the lights above us.

My mother.

The woman who raised me.

The woman who held me when I cried.

The woman who worked until her hands cracked.

The woman who told me every night that my father loved me.

She was not the woman in the photograph.

Jordan was looking at the same picture I was.

But his face told a different story.

He was not surprised.

He was remembering.

“Your mother?”” I repeated.

The word felt impossible.

Jordan nodded slowly.

“Our mother.””

I looked at Evelyn.

She was crying.

But she wasn’t denying it.

That hurt more than anything.

“Mom.””

My voice barely came out.

Evelyn looked at me.

“Marcus…”

“No.””

I stepped back.

“Don’t.””

The pain on her face was immediate.

But I couldn’t stop.

Not this time.

Everyone had been asking me to understand.

To forgive.

To accept.

But nobody understood what it felt like to discover your entire life was a puzzle with missing pieces.

“You knew.””

Evelyn lowered her eyes.

“Yes.””

The answer felt like a physical blow.

“You knew who Jordan was.””

“Yes.””

“You knew my father had another family.””

“Yes.””

My chest tightened.

“And you never told me.””

A tear fell down her cheek.

“I wanted to.””

“When?””

Her silence answered.

I shook my head.

“I spent my whole life wondering why my father disappeared. Why you never talked about him. Why there were no pictures of anyone except us.””

My voice cracked.

“And all this time, you knew there was another person who knew him.””

Jordan stepped closer.

“Marcus—”

I turned toward him.

“No.””

He stopped.

“I’m sorry.””

“I know.””

I looked at him.

“But everyone keeps saying sorry after they’ve already taken years from me.””

The words were harsh.

But they were true.

Jordan looked down.

“I deserved that.””

That surprised me.

He didn’t defend himself.

He didn’t make excuses.

He just accepted the anger.

And somehow, that made it harder.

Vanessa came closer.

“Marcus…”

I looked at her.

Her eyes were full of tears.

“I know this is too much.””

I nodded.

“Yes.””

“But I need you to know something.””

“What?””

“I never knew any of this.””

I studied her face.

The fear.

The heartbreak.

The confusion.

She looked exactly how I felt.

Lost.

“I believe you,” I whispered.

Her shoulders relaxed slightly.

“But I don’t know what to believe about anyone else anymore.””

She nodded.

“I understand.””

A sharp laugh came from Richard.

Nobody had noticed him moving toward the door.

“You’re all acting like victims.””

Every head turned.

He stood there with a cold expression.

Like he was done pretending.

“Richard,” Thomas said quietly.

“No.””

Richard looked around the room.

“All of you want someone to blame.””

His eyes landed on me.

“And Marcus wants to believe his father was some kind of hero.””

My jaw tightened.

“Don’t talk about him.””

“Why?””

Richard smiled.

“You never knew him.””

The sentence hit me because it was true.

I hated that.

“You knew the version he showed you,” Richard continued.

“The loving father. The honest businessman. The perfect man.””

He stepped forward.

“But Daniel Reed had secrets too.””

Jordan’s expression darkened.

“Don’t use his secrets to hide yours.””

Richard ignored him.

“You want the truth?””

He looked at me.

“Fine.””

My body tensed.

“Your father betrayed people.””

Evelyn shook her head.

“Stop.””

“No.””

Richard’s voice grew louder.

“He built his empire on promises he couldn’t keep.””

Thomas looked angry.

“That’s a lie.””

Richard laughed.

“Is it?””

He pointed toward Jordan.

“Ask him why Daniel abandoned him.””

Jordan’s face changed.

A small crack appeared.

I noticed.

“Jordan?””

He didn’t answer.

That scared me.

“Jordan.””

He looked away.

And suddenly I understood.

There was another secret.

Of course there was.

There was always another secret.

“What aren’t you telling me?””

Jordan was silent.

Richard smiled.

“There it is.””

He looked at me.

“Your perfect father wasn’t perfect.””

I turned toward Jordan.

“Tell me.””

Jordan took a deep breath.

“I wasn’t abandoned.””

The room went still.

“Then what?””

He looked at the floor.

“My father chose to leave.””

The words cut.

I stared at him.

“Why?””

Jordan’s voice was quiet.

“Because of me.””

Nobody moved.

“What does that mean?””

Jordan looked at the photograph.

“Our mother had problems.””

Evelyn looked away.

“She made choices that hurt people.””

I felt a strange wave of confusion.

The woman in the photograph.

The woman I had never met.

The woman everyone was afraid to talk about.

“She betrayed your father?”” I asked.

Jordan nodded.

“Yes.””

Richard smiled.

“Finally, the truth.””

Jordan looked at him.

“Don’t pretend you care.””

The smile disappeared.

Jordan continued.

“My mother was involved with Richard.””

The room erupted.

Vanessa covered her mouth.

Thomas looked shocked.

Evelyn closed her eyes.

I felt numb.

“What?””

Jordan looked at me.

“Our mother helped Richard steal from my father.””

The pieces started connecting.

The betrayal.

The money.

The missing evidence.

The lies.

“But why?””

Jordan shook his head.

“I don’t know everything.””

Richard interrupted.

“Because your father wasn’t innocent.””

Jordan turned.

“You still believe that?””

“I know that.””

“No.””

Jordan stepped closer.

“You know what you tell yourself so you can sleep at night.””

The tension between them was unbearable.

I looked at Evelyn.

“You knew?””

She nodded.

“I found out after Daniel died.””

“And you stayed?””

Her face broke.

“I stayed because I had you.””

The answer confused me.

“What does that mean?””

She looked at the photograph.

“Because I wasn’t your biological mother.””

The room disappeared.

Everything became silent.

I stared at her.

“What?””

My mother.

The only mother I had ever known.

The woman who raised me.

She whispered:

“I loved your father.””

She touched her chest.

“But before I was your mother…”

A tear rolled down her face.

“I was your father’s friend.””

I couldn’t move.

Jordan looked at me.

“Our biological mother left.””

My voice was barely audible.

“Then who is Evelyn?””

He answered softly.

“The woman who chose us.””

I looked at Evelyn.

She was crying.

“I met Daniel when he was already broken.””

She swallowed.

“Jordan was young. You were still a baby.””

I stared.

A baby.

“You raised me?””

She nodded.

“Yes.””

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because Daniel made me promise.””

I looked at the old letter.

“What promise?””

She took a breath.

“To protect you from the truth until you were old enough to handle it.””

I almost laughed.

“Handle it?””

I looked around.

“At my wedding?””

Her tears fell faster.

“I’m sorry.””

Before I could answer, the chapel doors opened again.

Everyone turned.

A woman stood there.

Older.

Carrying a worn bag.

Her eyes immediately found mine.

Then Jordan’s.

The entire room froze.

Jordan whispered:

“No.””

The woman took a slow step inside.

“I know I’m late.””

Her voice was weak.

But familiar.

Not because I knew her.

Because she sounded like someone from a dream.

Someone I had spent my whole life missing without knowing why.

She looked at Evelyn.

Then at Jordan.

Then at me.

“I came because I heard my sons finally learned the truth.””

My heart stopped.

Sons.

Two.

She walked closer.

“I’m sorry, Marcus.””

I stared at her.

“Who are you?””

Her face crumbled.

And then she said the words that shattered the last piece of my childhood.

“I’m the mother who left you.””

Nobody spoke.

The woman took another step forward.

“My name is Claire.””

May you like

She looked at the ring box in Evelyn’s hands.

“And I know what your father hid inside.””
