Chapter 7: The Warning My Father Left Me
I stared at Vanessa.
Not at her father.
Not at Richard.
Her.
Because in that moment, every fear I had buried came rushing back.
Was she part of this?
Was the woman I loved connected to the people who destroyed my family?
My mind searched through every memory.
Every conversation.
Every moment.
Looking for something I had missed.
But all I found was Vanessa.
The woman who laughed at my terrible jokes.
The woman who stayed awake with me when I worked late.
The woman who held my hand when I told her I was afraid of becoming like my father.
My father.
A man whose secrets had followed me into my wedding day.
“Marcus,” Vanessa whispered.
Her voice broke through my thoughts.
“I don’t know what he’s talking about.””
I wanted to believe her.
I needed to believe her.
But trust had become a dangerous thing.
I looked at Jordan.
“You said my father didn’t want me to marry into this family.””
Jordan nodded slowly.
“Yes.””
“Why?””
His eyes moved toward Thomas.
“Because your father discovered something about the Bennetts.””
Thomas closed his eyes.
Like he already knew what was coming.
Vanessa turned toward him.
“Dad?””
Thomas looked at his daughter.
And the sadness on his face scared me.
Because guilt looked different from fear.
Fear made people run.
Guilt made people stay.
“Tell him,” Jordan said.
Thomas remained silent.
“Tell him the truth.””
Vanessa’s voice trembled.
“Dad, what truth?””
Thomas looked around the wedding hall.
At all the guests.
At the decorations.
At the day that was supposed to be about his daughter.
Then he looked at me.
“I knew your father was investigating Richard.””
I nodded.
“We know that.””
“No.””
Thomas shook his head.
“You don’t.””
The room became quiet.
“Daniel didn’t just discover Richard was stealing money.””
Thomas took a breath.
“He discovered Richard was working with someone inside my company.””
My eyes narrowed.
“Your company?””
Thomas nodded.
“My company.””
The pieces started moving.
My father.
Richard.
Thomas.
The money.
The betrayal.
But something still didn’t make sense.
“Why would my father trust you if you were involved?””
Thomas looked down.
“Because I wasn’t the person he suspected.””
Jordan crossed his arms.
“But you were the person who benefited.””
Thomas flinched.
That was enough.
I looked at him.
“What does that mean?””
Thomas swallowed.
“After Daniel died, the business contracts changed.””
“And?””
“And the company that took over those contracts was mine.””
A wave of whispers moved through the guests.
Vanessa looked at her father like she was seeing him for the first time.
“Dad…”
Thomas turned toward her.
“I never wanted you involved.””
“But I was.””
Her voice was quiet.
“Because I’m marrying his son.””
Nobody spoke.
I looked at Vanessa.
And I hated how much pain was in her eyes.
She wasn’t angry.
She was devastated.
“I didn’t know,” she whispered.
I believed her.
But belief was not enough anymore.
Not after today.
Jordan stepped closer.
“Marcus, your father left clues because he knew the truth would eventually come out.””
He reached into the folder again.
He pulled out another paper.
“This was the last thing he wrote.””
My hands tightened.
“Another letter?””
Jordan nodded.
“Not exactly.””
He handed it to me.
It was a page from a notebook.
My father’s handwriting covered the paper.
This time, the words were shorter.
More urgent.
I read silently.
If Marcus ever discovers the truth, he needs to know one thing.
I stopped.
My throat tightened.
I continued.
Do not trust anyone who tells him they were protecting him.
Because the people who truly love him will tell him the truth, even when it hurts.
I looked up.
My eyes moved around the room.
Everyone had said the same thing.
I was protecting you.
Your mother.
Richard.
Thomas.
Everyone.
My father’s warning felt like it was written for this exact moment.
Jordan watched me.
“He knew people would use love as an excuse.””
I folded the paper.
“Why didn’t you come sooner?””
The question had been burning inside me.
Jordan looked away.
“Because I was afraid.””
“Of what?””
“Of becoming the reason your life fell apart.””
I stared at him.
“You’re my brother.””
He looked at me.
“I know.””
“Then why would you think finding me would destroy me?””
Jordan’s expression changed.
“Because I knew what happened to your father.””
The room froze.
I felt my heartbeat slow.
“What do you mean?””
Jordan looked at Evelyn.
She looked away.
My voice became quieter.
“What happened?””
Jordan took a deep breath.
“Your father didn’t die immediately after the accident.””
The words hit me harder than anything else.
“What?””
Vanessa covered her mouth.
Thomas looked down.
Richard stopped moving.
“He survived the crash,” Jordan continued.
I couldn’t understand.
“No.””
Jordan nodded.
“He was alive.””
My eyes filled.
“But everyone told me…”
“I know.””
My mother started crying.
“He was alive for three hours.””
I turned toward her.
“Mom?””
She broke down.
“I’m sorry.””
The world felt like it tilted.
“My father was alive?””
Evelyn nodded.
“He asked for you.””
I couldn’t breathe.
All those years.
All those birthdays.
All those moments when I wondered if he knew how much I missed him.
“He asked about me?””
My mother wiped her face.
“He kept saying your name.””
I looked away.
Because I couldn’t let everyone see me break.
But I already had.
Jordan continued softly.
“And before he died, he told someone where the evidence was hidden.””
“Who?””
Jordan looked at Richard.
Everyone followed his eyes.
Richard’s face had changed.
“You’re lying.””
Jordan shook his head.
“No.””
He reached into his pocket.
He pulled out a small recording device.
“My father recorded a conversation.””
Richard froze.
“When?””
“The night he died.””
A wave of fear moved through Richard’s face.
“No.””
Jordan pressed a button.
Static filled the room.
Then my father’s voice.
Weak.
Painful.
But alive.
“If you are hearing this…”
Everyone became still.
“Then I’m probably gone.””
My knees almost gave out.
Hearing him again.
Hearing him after twenty years.
It felt impossible.
My father continued.
“Richard, if you found this recording, then you know I discovered the truth.””
Richard looked like he wanted to disappear.
My father’s voice continued.
“You weren’t alone.””
I looked at Richard.
My father said:
“There was someone else helping you.””
The room exploded with silence.
Richard’s face went pale.
Thomas whispered, “No.””
Jordan looked at me.
The recording continued.
“And Marcus needs to know that person is closer than he thinks.””
The sound cut off.
Everyone froze.
Closer than he thinks.
My eyes moved slowly.
Richard.
Thomas.
Vanessa.
My mother.
Who?
Who had been close enough to betray my father?
Then my phone buzzed.
Everyone looked at me.
A message appeared on the screen.
Unknown number.
One sentence.
My blood turned cold.
*Stop looking for answers, Marcus. Your father died because he trusted the wrong woman.*
I stared at the message.
A second message arrived.
This time with a photo.
An old photo.
My mother.
Standing beside my father.
And another woman.
A woman I had never seen before.
But Jordan recognized her immediately.
His face changed.
“Where did you get that?””
I looked at him.
“Who is she?””
Jordan’s voice dropped.
And the fear in his eyes was worse than anything I had seen all day.
“That’s your father’s first wife.””
I froze.
“My father was married before?””
Jordan nodded.
“And Marcus…”
He looked at the message again.
“The woman who betrayed your father…”
A pause.
“…was not a stranger.””
My hands shook.
“Who was she?””
Jordan stared at the photograph.
May you like
Then whispered:
“She was our mother.””
