Chapter 6: The Brother Standing at the Door

The stranger standing in the doorway looked like a memory I had never lived.

Same eyes.

Same sharp jawline.

Same small scar near the eyebrow that I had seen in my own reflection countless times.

For a moment, my mind refused to accept what my eyes were showing me.

Because people are supposed to recognize their family.

A mother’s voice.

A father’s face.

A sibling’s smile.

But I had spent thirty-two years never knowing this man existed.

And yet, looking at him felt strangely familiar.

The wedding hall remained completely silent.

Even the guests who had been whispering moments earlier were frozen.

Nobody knew what to say.

Nobody knew whether they were watching a family reunion or the beginning of another disaster.

The man slowly stepped inside.

His eyes never left mine.

“Marcus.””

Hearing my name from his mouth felt strange.

Like it belonged to someone who had known me before I knew him.

My mother took a step forward.

Her hand covered her mouth.

“Jordan?””

The man looked at her.

And for the first time, his expression broke.

“Hello, Evelyn.””

My mother started crying.

Not the quiet tears she had shed earlier.

These were different.

These were years of grief finally escaping.

She walked toward him slowly.

Like she was afraid he would disappear.

“You’re alive.””

Jordan nodded.

“I’m alive.””

She touched his face gently.

“You look just like him.””

Jordan closed his eyes.

For a second, he looked like a child again.

A child who had also lost someone.

“I know.””

I watched them.

My mother.

My brother.

Two people connected by a past I never knew existed.

And I felt something I hated admitting.

I felt like the outsider.

In my own family.

Vanessa came closer to me.

“Marcus…”

I didn’t answer.

Because I didn’t know what I was feeling.

Anger?

Confusion?

Relief?

All of it.

Jordan looked at me.

Then he looked at the wedding decorations.

The flowers.

The altar.

The fake parents.

The destroyed illusion of my perfect day.

“I’m sorry.””

Those were the first words he said to me.

Not hello.

Not I’m your brother.

I’m sorry.

I frowned.

“For what?””

He looked down.

“For arriving like this.””

I almost laughed.

“Like this?””

I looked around.

“My wedding is falling apart, my fake parents are actually connected to my real family, my father left a secret letter, and I find out I have a brother I never knew existed.””

My voice cracked.

“And you’re sorry for arriving?””

Jordan didn’t get angry.

He just nodded.

“You have every right to hate me.””

That surprised me.

“I don’t know you.””

“I know.””

“Then why would I hate you?””

His eyes became heavy.

“Because I was supposed to find you years ago.””

The room went quiet again.

I stared at him.

“What?””

Jordan looked at Richard.

And the hatred in his eyes was immediate.

“I was supposed to find you after our father died.””

Richard’s face changed.

“You don’t know what happened.””

Jordan laughed quietly.

It was a bitter sound.

“I know exactly what happened.””

He looked back at me.

“Your father left instructions.””

My mother nodded slowly.

“He did.””

Jordan continued.

“He wanted us together.””

My chest tightened.

Together.

That word hurt.

Because my father had wanted something I never got.

A family.

A complete one.

“So why didn’t it happen?”” I asked.

Jordan looked at Richard.

“Because someone made sure it couldn’t.””

Richard shook his head.

“This is ridiculous.””

Jordan ignored him.

“After your father died, I was supposed to meet Evelyn.””

My mother looked down.

“But someone intercepted the messages.””

My eyes narrowed.

“Who?””

Nobody needed to answer.

I already knew.

Richard.

He stepped forward.

“You’re blaming me for things you can’t prove.””

Jordan stared at him.

“I can prove everything.””

That changed the room.

Richard’s confidence faded slightly.

“What did you say?””

Jordan reached into his jacket.

He pulled out a small folder.

Not old.

Not damaged.

Recent.

“I spent years collecting evidence.””

Richard’s face went pale.

I noticed.

Everyone noticed.

Thomas stepped closer.

“What’s inside?””

Jordan looked at him.

“The records my father hid.””

My heart started pounding.

The truth.

Again.

Always just out of reach.

Jordan handed the folder to me.

I hesitated.

Then took it.

Inside were copies of documents.

Bank transfers.

Company records.

Photographs.

And one document with my father’s signature.

I looked at the first page.

My hands started shaking.

“Marcus?””

Vanessa touched my shoulder.

I looked at her.

“This is…”

I couldn’t finish.

Because the document showed something I never expected.

My father had created a trust.

For both children.

Me.

And Jordan.

Equal shares.

Equal protection.

Equal inheritance.

I looked up.

“My father left money for both of us.””

Jordan nodded.

“Yes.””

“Then why did I grow up struggling?””

My mother looked away.

And that hurt.

Because I knew.

She had been protecting someone.

But who?

Jordan answered.

“Because the money disappeared.””

I looked at Richard.

He didn’t move.

“Did you take it?””

His face hardened.

“Be careful.””

“No.””

I stepped closer.

“I’m done being careful.””

The entire room watched.

“You lied to me. You pretended to be my father. You knew my real father. You knew my brother existed.””

My voice shook.

“So answer me.””

Richard stared at me.

“I did what I had to do.””

The words shocked everyone.

Vanessa stepped back.

“What?””

Richard realized what he had said.

But it was too late.

Jordan’s expression turned cold.

“You heard him.””

Thomas looked disgusted.

“You admitted it.””

Richard pointed at him.

“You don’t understand anything.””

“No,” I said.

“I understand enough.””

But Jordan shook his head.

“No, Marcus.””

I looked at him.

“You don’t understand yet.””

Something about his voice made me stop.

He wasn’t trying to attack Richard.

He was warning me.

“What else is there?””

Jordan looked at Evelyn.

She nodded slowly.

Like she had been waiting for this moment.

“Tell him.””

Jordan took a deep breath.

“My father didn’t just leave money.””

He looked at the letter.

“He left evidence.””

I frowned.

“What evidence?””

“Evidence of who was involved.””

Richard immediately moved toward the door.

Jordan noticed.

“Don’t.””

Richard stopped.

“You really think you can expose me after all these years?””

Jordan’s expression remained calm.

“I’m not here to expose you.””

He looked at me.

“I’m here to warn him.””

A cold feeling moved through my body.

“Warn me about what?””

Jordan looked at the wedding hall.

At Vanessa.

At Thomas.

At Richard.

Then back at me.

“Your father’s biggest mistake wasn’t trusting Richard.””

I waited.

Jordan’s voice lowered.

“It was trusting the wrong person after he discovered the betrayal.””

I felt my stomach tighten.

“Who?””

Jordan looked toward Vanessa’s family.

Toward Thomas.

Then toward the woman I loved.

Vanessa immediately shook her head.

“No.””

Jordan looked at her sadly.

“I’m sorry.””

My heart sank.

Because I already knew what was coming.

“Jordan.””

His eyes met mine.

“The person your father suspected most…”

He paused.

And the entire room held its breath.

“…was someone in the Bennett family.””

Vanessa stepped back.

“My family?””

Nobody spoke.

I looked at Thomas.

Then at Vanessa.

The woman I was supposed to marry.

The woman whose father was connected to my father’s death.

Jordan lowered his voice.

“And Marcus…”

I stared at him.

“What?””

He looked at the wedding ring on Vanessa’s finger.

Then at me.

“Your father didn’t want you to marry into this family.””

The room went silent.

My heartbeat became the only sound I could hear.

May you like

Because suddenly the question was no longer who destroyed my father’s life.

The question was whether I was about to repeat his biggest mistake.
