Chapter 2: The Secret Inside The Hospital Records

The message remained glowing on Maya’s phone.

*Ask Rochelle why she abandoned your mother at the hospital.*

For several seconds, nobody moved.

The candles flickered.

The musicians stood frozen near the wall, unsure whether to leave or stay.

Jalen stared at the screen as if the words might rearrange themselves into something less impossible.

“Maya,” he said slowly, “what does that mean?””

She didn’t answer right away.

Her fingers tightened around the phone.

Because she had spent years imagining this moment.

She had imagined anger.

She had imagined tears.

She had imagined Rochelle denying everything.

But she had never imagined seeing fear on Rochelle’s face.

That was the part Maya couldn’t ignore.

Rochelle wasn’t confused.

She wasn’t offended.

She was terrified.

“Maya,” Rochelle whispered, “where did you get that message?””

Maya looked up.

“Why does that matter?””

Rochelle’s lips parted, but no words came out.

Corinne looked between them.

“Mom, what is happening?””

Rochelle ignored her.

Her eyes stayed fixed on Maya.

“You need to leave.””

The words shocked everyone.

Jalen stood immediately.

“Mom.””

“No,” Rochelle snapped.

Her voice cracked with panic.

“You don’t understand.””

Jalen stared at her.

“Then explain.””

Rochelle looked away.

For the first time in his life, Jalen saw his mother unable to control a room.

Usually, Rochelle entered any space and people adjusted themselves around her.

She chose the conversation.

She controlled the tone.

She decided when things ended.

But tonight, she was losing control.

Maya slowly placed her phone back on the table.

“I didn’t come here to embarrass you.””

Rochelle gave a bitter laugh.

“Then why did you come?””

Maya touched the gold ring.

“Because my mother spent thirty years carrying this.””

Her voice became quieter.

“And she died without getting an answer.””

The room went silent again.

Jalen looked at Maya.

“Your mother?””

Maya nodded.

“My mother knew your family.””

Rochelle closed her eyes.

Just for a second.

But it was enough.

Jalen saw it.

“You knew her?””

Rochelle opened her eyes.

“No.””

The answer came too quickly.

Almost desperately.

Maya noticed too.

“Interesting.””

Rochelle looked at her.

“What?””

“You answered before thinking.””

Maya’s calmness made Rochelle more uncomfortable than anger would have.

“You don’t know what you’re talking about.””

Maya leaned back.

“Then tell me I’m wrong.””

Rochelle said nothing.

“Tell me my mother never met you.””

Silence.

“Tell me you never saw her at St. Gabriel’s Hospital.””

Rochelle’s face changed.

Just slightly.

But enough.

Jalen noticed.

“Mom?””

Rochelle looked at her son.

And for a moment, she looked like someone much older.

Someone carrying a secret too heavy to continue hiding.

“I think everyone needs to leave,” she said.

Corinne stood.

“Absolutely not.””

Everyone looked at her.

Corinne crossed her arms.

“I’ve spent my whole life watching you protect secrets I’m not allowed to ask about.””

She looked at Rochelle.

“So now I want answers too.””

Rochelle shook her head.

“Corinne, don’t.””

“No.””

Corinne’s confident expression was gone.

“I’m serious.””

She pointed toward Maya.

“This woman shows up with a ring you recognize, a message about a hospital, and suddenly you look terrified.””

She swallowed.

“What happened?””

Rochelle didn’t respond.

Jalen stepped closer to the table.

“Mom.””

His voice was softer.

“Please.””

That was what finally broke something.

Not the accusations.

Not the confrontation.

Her son asking.

Rochelle sat down slowly.

Her expensive dress folded beneath her as she lowered herself into the chair.

For the first time that night, she looked less like a powerful woman and more like someone remembering something she had spent decades trying to forget.

“Twenty-nine years ago,” Rochelle said quietly, “I was twenty-nine years old.””

Maya listened carefully.

“My life was different.””

Rochelle looked at the ring.

“I was working at the hospital. I was young. I thought I understood the world.””

Jalen pulled out a chair.

“Mom…”

She raised a hand.

“Let me finish.””

Everyone became silent.

“There was a woman named Elena Thompson.””

Maya’s heart stopped.

Her mother’s name.

Hearing it from Rochelle’s mouth felt impossible.

“You knew her,” Maya whispered.

Rochelle looked at her.

“Yes.””

The admission landed harder than any insult from earlier.

Jalen looked stunned.

“You said you didn’t know her.””

Rochelle lowered her eyes.

“I lied.””

The honesty was almost more frightening.

Maya felt her chest tighten.

“Why?””

Rochelle looked at the ring.

“Because I was afraid.””

“Afraid of what?””

Rochelle didn’t answer.

Maya leaned forward.

“My mother.””

The older woman looked up.

“She was never afraid of you.””

A painful expression crossed Rochelle’s face.

“She should have been.””

Jalen frowned.

“What does that mean?””

Rochelle rubbed her hands together.

“She came to the hospital with a baby.””

The room became completely still.

Maya felt cold.

“My mother had me.””

Rochelle nodded slowly.

“Yes.””

“Then why did the message say you abandoned her?””

Rochelle looked away.

Because she knew she couldn’t avoid it anymore.

“Because I did.””

Jalen stepped back.

“What?””

Corinne stared.

“Mom…”

Rochelle’s eyes filled with tears, but she didn’t wipe them away.

“I didn’t abandon her because I hated her.””

Maya’s voice was steady.

“Then why?””

Rochelle looked at her.

“Because I thought I was protecting someone.””

“Who?””

A long pause.

Then Rochelle whispered:

“Jalen.””

The answer made no sense.

Jalen looked confused.

“What does that have to do with me?””

Rochelle closed her eyes.

“I need to tell you something about the night you were born.””

Maya felt her heartbeat quicken.

Jalen slowly sat down.

“What?””

Rochelle stared at the table.

“The hospital records were changed.””

Nobody spoke.

“What records?”” Jalen asked.

“Your birth records.””

The words seemed to drain the air from the room.

Jalen shook his head.

“That’s impossible.””

“It isn’t.””

“Why would anyone change my birth records?””

Rochelle looked at Maya.

And Maya realized something.

The answer wasn’t just about Jalen.

It was about her too.

“My mother always told me there was something strange about my birth,” Maya said.

Rochelle looked at her.

“She was right.””

Jalen stood again.

“No.””

His voice became sharper.

“No, stop. I need someone to explain what is happening.””

Rochelle looked at her son.

“You and Maya…”

She paused.

“You were connected long before tonight.””

Maya frowned.

“What does that mean?””

Rochelle reached into her purse with shaking hands.

Everyone watched.

She pulled out an old photograph.

The edges were worn.

The picture had clearly been carried for years.

She placed it on the table.

Maya slowly reached for it.

The photograph showed two young women standing outside a hospital entrance.

One was Rochelle.

The other was Elena Thompson.

Maya’s mother.

But that wasn’t what made her breath catch.

Standing beside them were two newborn babies.

A baby boy.

And a baby girl.

Maya looked at Rochelle.

“Who are they?””

Rochelle’s eyes filled with regret.

“I spent twenty-nine years hoping nobody would ever find that picture.””

Jalen looked at the babies.

Then at his mother.

“Mom…”

Rochelle whispered:

“Because one of those babies was you.””

Maya’s fingers trembled around the photograph.

“And the other?””

Rochelle looked directly at her.

“The other was your mother’s child.””

Maya stared.

“But I’m her child.””

Rochelle nodded.

“That’s why the truth is so dangerous.””

Nobody breathed.

Then Rochelle said the words that changed everything.

“Because Maya…”

She looked at Jalen.

“…you and Jalen were never strangers.””

A sudden sound interrupted them.

A phone ringing.

Everyone turned.

It was not Maya’s.

It was Rochelle’s.

The screen showed an unknown number.

She looked terrified.

“Don’t answer it,” Maya said.

But Rochelle already knew who it was.

Her hand moved toward the phone.

Slowly.

Before she pressed accept, a new message appeared.

One sentence.

From the same unknown number.

*“If you tell them the truth, I’ll reveal what really happened to Elena Thompson that night.””*

Rochelle’s face went pale.

And this time, even Jalen saw it.

May you like

His mother wasn’t hiding a mistake.

She was hiding a crime.
