Chapter 3: The Daughter Who Was Never Supposed To Know
The message on Rochelle’s phone stayed visible for only a few seconds.
Then the screen went dark.
But the damage was already done.
Everyone at the table had seen her reaction.
The fear.
The guilt.
The way her hands shook as she held a phone she suddenly seemed afraid to touch.
Jalen stared at his mother.
“Who sent that?””
Rochelle didn’t answer.
“Mom.””
Still nothing.
“MOM.””
The sharpness in his voice finally made her look up.
Jalen had always been the calm one.
The one who protected her.
The one who made excuses for her when Corinne called her controlling.
But tonight, something had changed.
Tonight, he wasn’t looking at his mother like a son.
He was looking at her like someone trying to understand a stranger.
“Who sent that message?”” he asked again.
Rochelle slowly placed the phone face down.
“I don’t know.””
Maya let out a quiet breath.
“That’s a lie.””
Rochelle looked at her.
Maya’s voice remained calm.
“You knew exactly who it was.””
The older woman’s jaw tightened.
“You think you understand everything because someone sent you a message?””
“No.””
Maya touched the old photograph on the table.
“I think I understand because you recognized my mother’s name before I even said it.””
Rochelle looked away.
The silence was an answer.
Jalen picked up the photograph.
His fingers moved over the faded image.
Two young women.
Two babies.
A hospital entrance.
His eyes stopped on the newborn boy.
“That’s me?””
Rochelle nodded.
“Yes.””
“And the girl?””
Nobody answered.
Jalen looked at Maya.
His expression was filled with confusion.
“You?””
Maya didn’t speak.
Because she didn’t know what to believe anymore.
Her entire life had been built around one simple truth.
Elena Thompson was her mother.
She had her mother’s smile.
Her mother’s voice.
Her mother’s memories.
But now, sitting in a private dining room with strangers who suddenly knew impossible things about her past, Maya felt like someone had taken the floor from beneath her feet.
“My mother never told me about you,” Maya said.
Rochelle swallowed.
“She wouldn’t.””
“Why?””
“Because she was protecting you.””
Maya laughed softly.
It wasn’t amusement.
It was disbelief.
“Everyone keeps saying that.””
She looked around the table.
“Protecting me. Protecting Jalen. Protecting the family.””
Her eyes hardened.
“But nobody ever asks what happened to the people who were left behind.””
Rochelle lowered her gaze.
Maya leaned forward.
“My mother died believing someone betrayed her.””
A tear slipped down Rochelle’s cheek.
“I know.””
The answer shocked Maya.
“You know?””
Rochelle closed her eyes.
“Yes.””
“Then why did you let her die with that pain?””
Rochelle had no response.
And that silence hurt more than any explanation could.
Jalen looked between them.
“Wait.””
He stood.
“Everyone is talking around me.””
His voice cracked.
“I need the truth.””
Rochelle looked at him.
“I was young.””
Jalen shook his head.
“That doesn’t explain anything.””
“No.””
She looked at Maya.
“But what happened does.””
She took a slow breath.
“Your father and Elena knew each other.””
Jalen froze.
“My father?””
Maya’s eyes narrowed.
“My mother knew his father?””
Rochelle nodded.
“Yes.””
Corinne suddenly stepped back.
“Wait.””
Her face changed.
“Are you saying…”
She stopped herself.
Because even saying the thought out loud felt impossible.
Jalen looked at her.
“Say it.””
Corinne looked at Rochelle.
“Are you saying Maya is connected to our family?””
Rochelle didn’t answer.
She didn’t have to.
Jalen looked sick.
“No.””
He shook his head.
“No, that doesn’t make sense.””
Maya watched him carefully.
Because for the first time, she saw something beyond confusion.
She saw fear.
Not fear of her.
Fear of what the truth might mean.
“Jalen,” Maya said quietly.
He looked at her.
“I need you to tell me something.””
“What?””
“Did you know your mother knew my mother?””
Jalen opened his mouth.
Then closed it.
The hesitation was immediate.
Maya noticed.
“You knew.””
“No.””
The answer came quickly.
Too quickly.
“I didn’t know details.””
“But you knew something.””
Jalen looked away.
Maya’s heart sank.
“How long?””
Jalen rubbed his forehead.
“Last year.””
The room went silent.
Maya stared.
“Last year?””
Jalen looked ashamed.
“My mother told me not to ask questions.””
Maya stood.
“You knew there was something about my family?””
“I didn’t know it was you.””
“That doesn’t make it better.””
Jalen stepped closer.
“Maya, listen to me.””
She raised a hand.
“No.””
Her voice wasn’t loud.
That made it worse.
“You watched your family judge me tonight.””
Jalen looked down.
“You let them insult me.””
“I was going to stop it.””
“But you didn’t.””
The words hit him.
Because they were true.
Maya looked at Rochelle.
“And you knew who I was the entire time.””
Rochelle shook her head.
“No.””
Maya’s eyes narrowed.
“I knew the moment I saw the ring.””
That was the first honest thing Rochelle had said all night.
Maya looked down at the gold ring.
“My mother kept this for decades.””
Rochelle whispered.
“It belonged to my sister.””
Everyone stopped.
Maya looked up.
“Your sister?””
Rochelle nodded slowly.
“My younger sister.””
Jalen frowned.
“You never told us you had a sister.””
Rochelle looked at him.
“Because she disappeared.””
The room went still.
“What?”” Corinne asked.
Rochelle looked at the ring.
“My sister wore that ring every day.””
She touched the table near it but didn’t dare touch the jewelry.
“The night Elena came to the hospital, she had this ring.””
Maya’s breathing changed.
“Why?””
Rochelle looked at her.
“Because Elena wasn’t just bringing a baby to the hospital.””
She paused.
“She was bringing evidence.””
The word hung in the air.
Jalen frowned.
“Evidence of what?””
Rochelle looked toward the dark window.
Outside, the city lights blurred against the glass.
“Of what my family did.””
Corinne’s expression changed.
“Your family?””
Rochelle nodded.
“My father was involved.””
Maya stared.
“Your father?””
“Yes.””
“And my mother found out?””
“Yes.””
“What did she find out?””
Rochelle’s eyes filled with tears.
“That the Carter family had been hiding something for years.””
Nobody moved.
Then Maya’s phone vibrated.
Everyone looked at it.
Another message.
Same unknown number.
Maya picked it up.
Her face changed as she read.
Jalen noticed.
“What does it say?””
She didn’t answer.
“Maya.””
Slowly, she turned the phone around.
The message appeared on the screen.
*“Rochelle is telling you half the truth. Ask her what happened to the baby girl after Elena disappeared.””*
Rochelle went completely still.
Jalen looked at his mother.
“Baby girl?””
Corinne whispered:
“What baby girl?””
Maya looked at Rochelle.
Her voice was barely above a whisper.
“Who was the baby girl?””
Rochelle’s eyes moved from Maya…
to the ring…
to the photograph.
Then she said something that made Maya’s blood turn cold.
“She wasn’t supposed to survive.””
The room went silent.
Jalen stepped back.
“What does that mean?””
Rochelle looked at Maya with tears in her eyes.
“Your mother thought she was protecting you.””
Maya’s heart raced.
“Protecting me from what?””
Rochelle whispered:
“The truth about who you really are.””
Before Maya could respond, the dining room door suddenly opened.
Everyone turned.
A man in a dark coat stood there.
He looked directly at Rochelle.
And the fear on her face returned instantly.
Because she knew him.
“Maya Thompson,” the man said.
His voice was calm.
Too calm.
“You need to leave before Rochelle tells you the rest.””
Jalen stepped forward.
“Who are you?””
The man ignored him.
His eyes remained on Maya.
Then he said the one thing that made Rochelle stand up in panic.
“Because your mother didn’t abandon you.””
A pause.
“She tried to save you.””
May you like
The man looked at Rochelle.
“And you know exactly who tried to kill her.””
