Chapter 5: The Father Who Was Buried Alive
Nobody spoke.
The photograph sat in the middle of the table like a weapon.
Maya stared at the man standing beside her mother.
A man she had never seen.
A man who was supposed to be dead.
A man Marcus had just called her father.
Her fingers hovered over the picture, but she couldn’t bring herself to touch it.
“No.””
The word escaped before she even realized she had spoken.
Marcus looked at her.
“Maya—”
“No.””
She shook her head.
“My father died.””
Her voice became sharper.
“I have his death certificate.””
Marcus nodded slowly.
“I know.””
“Then why are you saying this?””
“Because the death certificate was fake.””
The room seemed to tilt.
Jalen looked at Marcus.
“You’re telling me my family forged a death certificate?””
Marcus didn’t answer.
That was answer enough.
Jalen turned toward Rochelle.
“Mom?””
Rochelle looked broken.
Not defensive.
Not angry.
Broken.
“I didn’t know everything.””
Maya laughed softly.
The sound was filled with pain.
“You keep saying that.””
She looked at Rochelle.
“But somehow you always know enough to hide something.””
Rochelle accepted the accusation.
Because she couldn’t deny it.
Marcus looked at Maya.
“Your father’s name was Daniel Thompson.””
Maya whispered:
“Daniel…”
She had heard the name before.
Only once.
Years ago.
A story her mother told when Maya was eight years old.
A story she thought was about someone else.
“He was an artist,” Maya said quietly.
Marcus nodded.
“Yes.””
“He painted?””
“Yes.””
Maya’s eyes filled.
“My mother had one painting hidden in her closet.””
Nobody moved.
“She told me it was from someone important.””
Her voice shook.
“But she never told me who.””
Marcus looked at the photograph.
“Because she was afraid that if anyone knew Daniel was alive, they would come for you.””
Jalen looked confused.
“Why would anyone come after a man who was already gone?””
Marcus looked at him.
“Because Daniel was the only person who could expose what Richard Carter did.””
Jalen’s expression hardened.
“My grandfather?””
Marcus nodded.
“Your grandfather built his reputation on one lie after another.””
Rochelle closed her eyes.
“Marcus.””
But he continued.
“Richard Carter wasn’t just a businessman. He was a man who believed everything had a price.””
Maya looked at him.
“And my father found out.””
“Yes.””
“What did he find?””
Marcus hesitated.
Then he answered.
“The original inheritance documents.””
Jalen frowned.
“What inheritance?””
Marcus looked at him.
“The Carter family company was never supposed to belong only to Richard.””
He pointed toward the photograph.
“Daniel was Richard’s nephew.””
Rochelle corrected quietly.
“His son’s younger half-brother.””
Everyone looked at her.
She swallowed.
“There was a child Richard never acknowledged.””
Maya stared.
“Daniel.””
“Yes.””
Jalen shook his head.
“This makes no sense.””
“It does if you understand Richard,” Marcus said.
“He erased people who threatened him.””
Maya looked at the ring.
“My mother knew.””
Marcus nodded.
“She found documents proving Daniel’s identity.””
“And then?””
“Then she went to Rochelle.””
All eyes turned.
Rochelle looked down.
Maya’s expression changed.
“You went to my mother?””
Rochelle nodded.
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Rochelle’s voice became quiet.
“Because I wanted to help her.””
Maya stared.
“But you didn’t.””
“No.””
Rochelle looked ashamed.
“I failed her.””
The admission was painful.
Even Jalen looked surprised.
“What happened?””
Rochelle took a deep breath.
“That night at the hospital…”
Her voice trembled.
“Elena was terrified.””
Maya listened.
“She came to me because she thought I was the only person who would believe her.””
“Why you?””
Rochelle looked at the ring.
“Because my sister had been trying to expose my father for years.””
Maya frowned.
“Your sister?””
Rochelle nodded.
“She knew Richard was dangerous.””
The room grew colder.
“She was the first person who tried to help Daniel.””
Maya looked at the ring.
“And what happened to her?””
Rochelle looked away.
“She disappeared.””
Corinne whispered:
“You never told us you had a sister.””
“I know.””
“Why?””
“Because Richard made sure nobody would ask.””
Jalen ran a hand through his hair.
His entire understanding of his family was collapsing.
“So my grandfather destroyed his own family?””
Marcus looked at him.
“Yes.””
Jalen looked sick.
“And my father knew?””
Nobody answered.
But the silence was enough.
Jalen looked at Rochelle.
“Did Dad know?””
Rochelle’s eyes filled.
“Yes.””
The answer crushed him.
“My whole life…”
He stopped.
Because he didn’t know how to finish the sentence.
Maya watched him.
For a moment, she forgot her own pain.
Because she saw someone else losing the family story they believed.
“Jalen.””
He looked at her.
“I’m sorry.””
The words surprised him.
After everything.
After the lies.
She was still comforting him.
But Maya was hurting too.
She turned back to Marcus.
“Where is my father?””
Marcus didn’t respond.
That hesitation scared her.
“Where is he?””
“Maya…”
“Where is he?””
Marcus looked at Rochelle.
Then back at Maya.
“He’s alive.””
The room went completely silent.
Maya’s breath caught.
Alive.
The word felt impossible.
“My father is alive?””
“Yes.””
“Where?””
Marcus lowered his eyes.
“I don’t know.””
Her face fell.
“You don’t know?””
“I knew where he was for many years.””
“What does that mean?””
Marcus looked at the photograph.
“After Elena disappeared, Daniel spent years moving from place to place.””
“Running?””
“Yes.””
“From who?””
Marcus didn’t answer.
He didn’t need to.
Maya already knew.
“The Carters.””
Marcus nodded.
“But three months ago, I received a letter.””
“From him?””
“Yes.””
Maya stepped closer.
“Where is it?””
Marcus reached into his coat and removed another envelope.
But before he handed it to her, Rochelle stood.
“Don’t.””
Everyone looked at her.
Her voice was desperate.
“Maya, please.””
“Why?””
Rochelle looked terrified.
“Because if you open that letter, there’s no going back.””
Maya stared.
“There hasn’t been a way back since I walked into this room.””
She took the envelope.
Her hands shook.
The name on the front was written in faded ink.
*For Maya.*
She opened it slowly.
Inside was one page.
Only a few sentences.
But the first line made her knees weak.
*My daughter, I know you were told I died. I know you were told your mother left you. Both were lies.*
Maya continued reading.
*I stayed away because I believed distance was the only way to keep you alive.*
Her eyes moved faster.
*But now they know you found the ring.*
She stopped.
Jalen noticed.
“What?””
Maya looked up.
Her face had gone pale.
“What does it say?””
She couldn’t speak.
Marcus took the letter carefully.
He read the next line.
And his expression changed.
“What?””
Rochelle whispered.
“What did he say?””
Marcus slowly looked at Maya.
“Daniel wrote…”
He paused.
Then read the sentence aloud.
*“The moment Rochelle recognizes the ring, you are in danger.””*
Nobody moved.
Maya looked at Rochelle.
The older woman looked horrified.
Jalen stepped forward.
“Why?””
Marcus looked at Rochelle.
Because he already knew.
But Maya didn’t.
“Why would the ring put her in danger?””
Rochelle’s eyes filled with tears.
And then, for the first time all night, she told the truth without hesitation.
“Because that ring wasn’t just a family keepsake.””
She looked at Maya.
“It was the proof Richard Carter spent his entire life trying to destroy.””
Maya’s heart raced.
“What proof?””
Rochelle whispered:
“The proof that you are the rightful heir to everything he stole.””
A sudden crash came from outside the dining room.
Everyone turned.
The lights flickered.
Then went dark.
For three seconds, there was nothing but silence.
Then emergency lights came on.
And the door to the private dining room slowly opened.
A voice came from the hallway.
A voice Maya had never heard before.
But Rochelle recognized instantly.
“No one leaves this room.””
Rochelle froze.
Because she knew who was standing outside.
And she knew why he had come.
A shadow appeared in the doorway.
Then the man stepped into the light.
Older.
Elegant.
Cold.
Jalen stared.
“Who is that?””
Rochelle whispered:
“Your grandfather’s last living secret.””
The man looked directly at Maya.
And smiled.
“Daniel’s daughter.””
May you like
He paused.
“I’ve been waiting a very long time to meet you.””
