Chapter 9: The Truth Jalen Never Wanted To Tell

Maya stared at Jalen.

The man she had planned to marry.

The man she thought was the one person in the room who had no connection to the secrets destroying her life.

But his face told her everything.

He knew something.

And he had known it before tonight.

The message on her phone remained between them.

*You want to find your sister? Ask Jalen who he has been protecting all these years.*

Nobody spoke.

Not Elena.

Not Rochelle.

Not Marcus.

Everyone was waiting for Jalen.

Finally, he looked down.

And Maya felt her heart sink.

Because silence was no longer confusion.

It was confirmation.

“How long?”” Maya asked.

Jalen looked up.

“Maya…”

“How long have you known?””

His eyes filled with guilt.

“I didn’t know everything.””

She laughed quietly.

Again.

That painful laugh.

“Everyone says that.””

Jalen flinched.

“I swear to you—”

“No.””

Her voice stopped him.

“You don’t get to swear anymore.””

The words hurt him.

But Maya didn’t look away.

“Not after tonight.””

Jalen swallowed.

“I found out about my sister.””

The room froze.

Elena’s expression changed.

“Your sister?””

Jalen looked at her.

“Yes.””

Maya felt a chill.

“You knew?””

Jalen looked at Maya.

“Not like this.””

“Then explain.””

He closed his eyes.

For a moment, he looked like the same man she fell in love with.

The man who brought her coffee when she worked late.

The man who remembered every little thing she liked.

The man who held her hand when she was afraid.

But tonight, she realized love did not erase secrets.

“I was seventeen,” Jalen said.

Nobody moved.

“My grandfather was still alive.””

Rochelle looked at him.

“Jalen…”

He ignored her.

“One night, I heard him arguing with my father.””

His voice became quieter.

“They thought I was asleep.””

Maya listened.

“What did you hear?””

Jalen looked at the floor.

“I heard them talking about a girl.””

Elena stepped closer.

“A girl?””

Jalen nodded.

“They called her ‘the mistake.’”

The words made Elena’s face change.

Maya felt sick.

“They knew?””

“Yes.””

Jalen looked at Rochelle.

“My mother knew too.””

Rochelle closed her eyes.

“I wanted to tell you.””

Jalen shook his head.

“No.””

His voice cracked.

“You wanted to protect me.””

Rochelle looked at him.

“That’s not fair.””

“Isn’t it?””

The question broke her.

Because she knew it was.

Jalen turned back to Maya.

“I found old files.””

“What files?””

“Medical records.””

Marcus immediately became alert.

“Where?””

Jalen hesitated.

“My grandfather’s office.””

Maya stared.

“You went through his things?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because I knew something was wrong.””

He looked at her.

“I didn’t know it was you.””

Maya’s eyes narrowed.

“But you knew about a missing girl.””

Jalen nodded.

“Yes.””

“And you never told me.””

“No.””

The honesty hurt.

More than another lie would have.

“Why?””

Jalen’s eyes filled.

“Because I was afraid.””

Maya shook her head.

“Of what?””

“That the truth would destroy everything.””

A painful silence followed.

Maya looked around.

“Everything.””

She repeated the word softly.

“My life.””

She looked at Elena.

“My mother.””

She looked at Rochelle.

“My family.””

Then she looked at Jalen.

“Our future.””

Jalen stepped closer.

“Maya, please.””

She moved away.

“No.””

His face fell.

“I love you.””

The words broke through the room.

For a moment, nobody breathed.

Maya looked at him.

“I know.””

Her voice was softer.

“That’s why this hurts.””

Jalen lowered his head.

“I wanted to tell you.””

“When?””

He didn’t answer.

“When we were married?””

Silence.

“After we had children?””

Silence.

“After I became part of your family?””

Jalen closed his eyes.

“Maya…”

“No.””

She wiped her tears.

“I need the truth.””

Jalen nodded slowly.

“You deserve it.””

Marcus looked at him.

“Then tell her everything.””

Jalen took a deep breath.

“The girl in those records…”

Everyone waited.

“She wasn’t taken away randomly.””

Elena’s face tightened.

“What do you mean?””

Jalen looked at her.

“She was hidden.””

Maya felt cold.

“By who?””

Jalen looked at Rochelle.

Rochelle looked away.

Then he said:

“By my mother.””

Maya stared.

“No.””

Rochelle broke down.

“I didn’t have a choice.””

Elena’s expression hardened.

“You always say that.””

Rochelle looked at her.

“Because it’s true.””

“You could have fought.””

“I did.””

“When?””

Rochelle’s voice broke.

“When they threatened my children.””

Jalen looked confused.

“My children?””

Rochelle looked at him.

“You.””

A pause.

“And your sister.””

Everyone froze.

Jalen frowned.

“My sister?””

Rochelle nodded.

“The girl you thought was a stranger.””

Maya’s heart raced.

“What are you saying?””

Rochelle looked at Jalen.

“She was placed with someone we trusted.””

Jalen stared.

“Who?””

Rochelle couldn’t speak.

Maya whispered:

“Jalen.””

He looked at her.

The fear in his eyes answered before his mouth did.

“No.””

Maya felt her stomach drop.

“Who?””

Jalen stepped back.

“I didn’t know.””

“Who?””

His voice broke.

“My father.””

The room went silent.

Elena covered her mouth.

“No.””

Jalen looked devastated.

“My father raised her.””

Maya couldn’t move.

“Your sister…”

She stopped.

“Was my sister.””

Jalen nodded.

“She was.””

A thousand thoughts crashed through Maya’s mind.

The missing child.

The Carter family.

The hidden records.

The man she loved.

“My sister was in your house?””

Jalen nodded.

“For years.””

Maya looked at Rochelle.

“How could you?””

Rochelle cried.

“I didn’t know where they took her.””

“But you knew she was alive.””

“Yes.””

“And you let me search for answers alone.””

Rochelle had no defense.

Maya turned away.

She felt like she couldn’t breathe.

Then Jalen spoke.

“There’s more.””

She stopped.

“What?””

Jalen looked at Marcus.

Then Elena.

Then Maya.

“The reason I didn’t tell you…”

He swallowed.

“Was because I knew who she was.””

Maya turned slowly.

“What?””

Jalen’s eyes filled with tears.

“I knew your sister.””

A terrible silence.

“You met her?””

“Yes.””

“When?””

Jalen looked down.

“Before I met you.””

Maya’s heart cracked.

“What does that mean?””

Jalen whispered:

“She was the woman who helped me after my father died.””

Maya froze.

“Where is she?””

Jalen looked at her.

“I don’t know.””

“You knew her name?””

“Yes.””

“Tell me.””

His lips trembled.

“She called herself Lily.””

Elena gasped.

“No.””

Everyone looked at her.

Maya turned.

“You know that name?””

Elena’s face went pale.

“Yes.””

“How?””

Elena stepped back.

“Because that’s the name I gave her.””

Maya stared.

Her sister had a name.

A real name.

After all these years.

“Where is she?””

Nobody answered.

Then Marcus’s phone rang.

He looked at the screen.

His expression changed.

“What?””

Maya noticed.

“What happened?””

Marcus answered.

Nobody could hear the voice on the other side.

But whatever they said made him go still.

“Are you sure?””

A pause.

Then Marcus looked at Maya.

Everyone saw it.

The fear.

“She’s been found.””

Maya’s heart stopped.

“Who?””

Marcus slowly lowered the phone.

“Lily.””

Elena covered her mouth.

Jalen stepped forward.

“Where?””

Marcus looked toward the door.

“Not where.””

A pause.

“How.””

The room became silent.

Marcus looked at Maya.

“Victor found her first.””

Maya felt cold.

“What does that mean?””

Marcus’s voice dropped.

“It means the person who spent twenty-nine years hiding your sister…”

He looked at Rochelle.

“…is now the person trying to use her against you.””

Rochelle shook her head.

“No.””

Marcus nodded.

“He sent one final message.””

Maya’s phone buzzed.

Everyone looked.

Another unknown message.

Maya opened it.

This time there was a photo.

A woman.

Older.

Tired.

But with Maya’s eyes.

Under the picture were five words.

*“Come find your sister alone.””*

Maya stared.

Then another line appeared.

*“Or she disappears like your mother almost did.””*

Jalen stepped toward her.

“Maya, don’t go.””

She looked at him.

For the first time all night, she looked completely certain.

“My whole life, everyone decided what I could handle.””

She picked up the necklace.

“The lies end now.””

Elena grabbed her hand.

“Don’t go alone.””

Maya looked at her mother.

“I’m not.””

She looked at Jalen.

“I’m taking the truth with me.””

Outside, thunder rolled across the city.

May you like

And somewhere in the darkness…

the sister Maya had spent her entire life searching for was waiting.
