Chapter 8: The Child Hidden In The Records

The room stayed silent long after Victor left.

Nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

The words he left behind seemed heavier than the secrets that had already been uncovered.

*Two baby girls.*

Maya stared at Elena.

Her mother looked terrified.

Not confused.

Not surprised.

Terrified.

And that was the answer Maya didn’t want.

“You knew.””

Elena closed her eyes.

“Maya…”

“No.””

Her voice shook.

“You knew.””

Elena swallowed.

“Yes.””

The admission was quiet.

But it broke something.

Maya stepped back.

“How long?””

Elena looked at her daughter.

“Since the night you were born.””

Jalen looked between them.

“I don’t understand.””

Neither did Maya.

“My entire life,” Maya whispered, “there was always something missing.””

She touched the necklace around her neck.

“First my father.””

A pause.

“Then you.””

Her eyes filled.

“And now there’s another baby?””

Elena reached toward her.

Maya stepped away.

That small movement hurt Elena more than any words.

“I wanted to tell you.””

“When?””

Elena had no answer.

“When I was twenty-five?””

Silence.

“When I was thirty?””

“Maya…”

“When I had children of my own?””

Her voice broke.

“You were always waiting for the perfect time.””

Elena looked down.

“And I was always the one paying for it.””

The words stayed in the room.

Even Rochelle looked away.

Because she understood.

She had spent years doing the same thing.

Calling silence protection.

Calling fear love.

Jalen walked slowly toward the table.

“The hospital records.””

Everyone looked at him.

“What did Victor mean?””

Elena didn’t answer.

Jalen’s expression hardened.

“Mom?””

Rochelle looked at Elena.

Then at Maya.

Then finally at her son.

“The records were changed.””

Jalen shook his head.

“Again?””

His voice carried exhaustion.

“Another lie?””

Rochelle looked ashamed.

“Yes.””

Maya looked at her.

“Why?””

Rochelle sat down.

Because she looked like she couldn’t stand anymore.

“Because Richard needed the world to believe only one child survived.””

Maya frowned.

“Why?””

Elena answered.

“Because the other child had a claim.””

Jalen looked confused.

“Claim to what?””

“The company.””

Marcus stepped closer.

“The Carter inheritance wasn’t only about money.””

Everyone looked at him.

“It was about control.””

He looked at Maya.

“Richard believed blood gave him power.””

Maya touched the ring.

“And he thought I threatened that.””

“Yes.””

Jalen shook his head.

“So what happened to the other baby?””

No one answered.

The silence was unbearable.

Maya looked at Elena.

“Who was she?””

Elena’s eyes filled with tears.

“She was your sister.””

The words landed softly.

But they destroyed everything.

Maya stared.

“My…”

She couldn’t finish.

Elena nodded.

“Your twin sister.””

The room seemed to disappear.

Maya grabbed the edge of the table.

“No.””

Elena cried.

“I’m sorry.””

“No.””

Maya shook her head.

“No, my mother would have told me.””

The sentence hurt because she knew.

Her mother was standing right there.

And she hadn’t.

“She would have told me.””

Elena looked at her.

“I tried.””

“When?””

“Many times.””

“But you didn’t.””

Elena looked broken.

“Because every time I got close, they found me.””

Maya looked at Marcus.

“Who?””

Marcus answered quietly.

“The Carters.””

Maya looked back at Elena.

“So my sister…”

Elena’s voice trembled.

“I don’t know where she is.””

That was somehow worse.

Maya closed her eyes.

A sister.

A person who had existed beside her for one moment.

Then disappeared.

“Did she die?””

Elena immediately shook her head.

“No.””

The answer came too quickly.

Maya opened her eyes.

“How do you know?””

Elena looked toward the door where Victor had left.

“Because Richard told me she was alive.””

Everyone froze.

Jalen stepped forward.

“He knew?””

Elena nodded.

“He used her to control me.””

Maya’s hands trembled.

“What does that mean?””

Elena took a deep breath.

“The night I escaped with you, Richard took your sister.””

Silence.

“No.””

Maya’s voice was barely audible.

“He took a baby?””

Elena cried.

“Yes.””

Marcus looked away.

He had known.

He had carried this truth too.

“Why didn’t you go after her?””

Maya’s question was not angry.

That made it worse.

It was just pain.

Elena looked at her.

“I did.””

“And?””

“They told me if I fought, they would lose her forever.””

Maya stared.

“So you chose me.””

Elena’s tears fell.

“I chose both of you.””

“But you only saved one.””

The words hurt.

But Elena nodded.

“Yes.””

She didn’t defend herself.

She didn’t make excuses.

“I have regretted that every day of my life.””

The room became quiet.

Then Jalen spoke.

“What was her name?””

Everyone looked at him.

Elena looked surprised.

“My sister,” Jalen continued.

His voice was softer.

“Your daughter.””

Elena wiped her tears.

“She didn’t have a name when they took her.””

Maya looked down.

A strange sadness filled her.

A person could exist.

A life could begin.

And still be erased.

“Why tell us now?””

Elena looked at Marcus.

He answered.

“Because Victor activated the final stage.””

Jalen frowned.

“What does that mean?””

Marcus looked at the flash drive Victor had taken.

“That drive contains the original hospital records.””

Maya’s heart sank.

“And he has them.””

“Yes.””

Rochelle suddenly stood.

“No.””

Everyone turned.

She looked terrified.

“He won’t release them.””

Marcus looked at her.

“Why?””

“Because if he does…”

She stopped.

Maya watched her.

“If he does what?””

Rochelle looked at Maya.

“He destroys everyone connected to Richard.””

Maya frowned.

“That sounds like justice.””

Rochelle shook her head.

“No.””

Her voice became urgent.

“You don’t understand.””

She looked at Jalen.

“He won’t just expose Richard.””

A pause.

“He will expose you.””

Jalen froze.

“What does that mean?””

Rochelle looked at Maya.

“The hospital records don’t only show that you are Daniel’s daughter.””

She swallowed.

“They show what happened the night you were born.””

Maya stared.

“What happened?””

Rochelle looked away.

Then she said:

“You and your sister weren’t switched by accident.””

The room went cold.

Jalen whispered:

“What?””

Rochelle’s voice shook.

“Someone ordered the switch.””

Maya felt numb.

“Who?””

Nobody answered.

Then Elena spoke.

Her voice barely existed.

“Your father.””

Maya stared at her.

“No.””

Elena cried.

“I know how it sounds.””

“No.””

“My father?””

Elena nodded.

“Daniel.””

The man she had spent her life believing was a victim.

The man she had imagined as a hero.

The man who left behind a ring and a mystery.

“No.””

Maya shook her head.

“My father wouldn’t do that.””

Elena looked devastated.

“I know.””

“Then why?””

“Because he thought he was saving you.””

The answer made no sense.

Marcus stepped closer.

“Daniel discovered something before you were born.””

“What?””

“He discovered Richard wasn’t the only person trying to control the inheritance.””

Maya looked confused.

“Who else?””

Elena looked at Rochelle.

Everyone followed her gaze.

Rochelle’s face went pale.

“No.””

Maya turned.

“Rochelle?””

The older woman looked like she wanted to disappear.

“Tell her,” Elena whispered.

Rochelle shook her head.

“Please.””

“Tell her.””

A long silence.

Then Rochelle finally spoke.

“My father wasn’t the only one who changed the records.””

Maya waited.

Her voice trembled.

“I was there.””

Jalen stared.

“Mom…”

Rochelle looked at Maya.

“I helped them.””

The confession shattered the room.

Maya stepped back.

“You?””

Rochelle cried.

“I was young.””

“That’s what everyone says.””

“I was scared.””

“You let my mother lose her daughter.””

“I know.””

“You let me grow up without my sister.””

“I know.””

Maya’s eyes filled with anger.

“And you sat across from me tonight and judged me?””

Rochelle broke down.

“Because I knew exactly what I had done.””

Nobody spoke.

Then Maya noticed something.

A small detail.

A hesitation.

A missing piece.

She looked at Rochelle.

“Why?””

Rochelle looked up.

“What?””

“Why would you help them?””

Rochelle couldn’t answer.

Maya stepped closer.

“Why?””

Finally, Rochelle whispered:

“Because they promised me something.””

“What?””

Rochelle looked at Jalen.

Then at Maya.

“They promised they would protect my son.””

Jalen froze.

“What?””

Rochelle’s voice broke.

“But they lied.””

The lights suddenly flickered.

Everyone turned.

Marcus looked toward the windows.

“We need to leave.””

Maya didn’t move.

“Not until I know everything.””

Marcus looked at her.

“Maya—”

“No.””

She looked at Elena.

“My sister is alive.””

Elena nodded.

“She is.””

“Where?””

Nobody answered.

Then Maya’s phone buzzed.

A new message.

Everyone stared.

The sender name appeared.

*Unknown.*

Maya opened it.

Only one sentence.

But it changed everything.

*“You want to find your sister? Ask Jalen who he has been protecting all these years.””*

Slowly, Maya looked up.

At Jalen.

His face had gone pale.

Because he already knew what the message meant.

And he whispered:

May you like

“Maya…”

“I can explain.””
