Chapter 4: The Box Beneath the Floorboards
The house had never felt so unfamiliar.
I had walked through those rooms thousands of times.
I knew the sound of the wooden stairs when someone stepped on the third step.
I knew which kitchen cabinet stuck whenever it rained.
I knew where my father kept his old photographs.
But standing there now, watching Vanessa disappear down the hallway in search of a secret she had hidden for years, the house felt like a stranger’s place.
Like it had been keeping something from me.
Daniel stood beside me.
Silent.
Too silent.
“Dad.””
He didn’t look at me.
“Maya…”
I shook my head.
“No.””
He finally turned.
His eyes were filled with regret.
“You don’t understand.””
“Then help me understand.””
My voice cracked.
“Because right now, I feel like I’m the only person who doesn’t know my own life.””
The words hit him.
I saw it.
His shoulders dropped.
“I never wanted you involved in this.””
“That’s what everyone says before they tell someone the truth they should have known years ago.””
Daniel looked down.
For a moment, he wasn’t my strong father anymore.
He was just a man carrying something heavy.
“I thought I was protecting you.””
I laughed softly.
But there was no humor in it.
“From what?””
Before he could answer, Vanessa returned.
She was holding a small wooden box.
Old.
Scratched.
The corners were worn from years of being moved and hidden.
My heart started beating faster.
That box looked like it carried memories.
Or damage.
Maybe both.
Vanessa placed it on the dining table.
Nobody spoke.
The party outside continued in the distance.
People were leaving quietly.
The perfect graduation celebration was disappearing piece by piece.
Just like the image of my family.
Vanessa ran her fingers across the top of the box.
“I kept telling myself I would deal with this one day.””
Daniel stared at her.
“You should have.””
“I know.””
That answer surprised me.
There was no anger.
No defense.
Just exhaustion.
Vanessa opened the box.
Inside were old photographs, letters, newspaper clippings, and a small envelope with my name written on it.
Maya.
My hands went cold.
“That’s mine?””
Vanessa nodded.
“I found it years ago.””
“Why does it have my name?””
She looked at Daniel.
He looked away.
That was the moment I knew.
Both of them had known.
Both of them had hidden something.
I reached for the envelope.
Vanessa stopped me.
“Wait.””
My eyes narrowed.
“Why?””
She swallowed.
“Because once you read it, things change.””
I stared at her.
“Things already changed.””
I took the envelope.
It was old.
The paper had yellowed.
But the handwriting was beautiful.
I knew that handwriting.
I had seen it on the few birthday cards my mother left behind.
My mother’s handwriting.
My fingers trembled.
“She wrote this?””
Vanessa nodded.
“Yes.””
I looked at Daniel.
“Dad?””
He looked away again.
And somehow, that hurt more than Vanessa’s lies.
Because I expected Vanessa to hide things.
But my father?
The man who promised he would always tell me the truth?
That was different.
I opened the envelope.
Inside was a letter.
One page.
Only one.
But the first sentence made my entire body freeze.
My dearest Maya,
If you are reading this, then something happened that forced the truth to come out.
I stopped breathing.
The room disappeared.
The sounds outside disappeared.
There was only the letter.
My mother’s words.
A voice I barely remembered.
I continued reading.
I need you to know something important.
Your father loved you more than anything in this world.
I looked at Daniel.
A tear moved down his cheek.
But I kept reading.
However, there are people who will tell you a different story.
People who will say I made mistakes.
People who will say I was the reason everything fell apart.
Some of those things may be true.
Some may not.
But you deserve the chance to decide for yourself.
My heart pounded.
Why would she write that?
Why would anyone say those things about her?
I looked up.
“What happened to my mother?””
Nobody answered.
Vanessa sat down slowly.
“Her name was Olivia.””
“I know her name.””
My voice became sharper.
“I want to know what happened.””
Daniel finally spoke.
“Your mother made choices.””
I looked at him.
“What choices?””
He looked like he wanted to answer.
But he couldn’t.
Vanessa interrupted.
“Your mother found out something.””
Daniel immediately turned toward her.
“Enough.””
“No.””
Vanessa looked at him.
“For years, you let Maya believe she was abandoned.””
My eyes widened.
“Abandoned?””
Daniel looked at me.
“I never said that.””
“You didn’t have to.””
The room became painfully quiet.
Because he knew it was true.
My mother’s death was always described in simple words.
She was gone.
She passed away.
Life moved on.
Nobody ever told me there was a story behind it.
Vanessa looked back at the box.
“Olivia discovered Marcus was involved in something illegal.””
My eyebrows pulled together.
“Marcus?””
Her brother.
The man who had written the note.
“What did he do?””
Vanessa hesitated.
“He had access to financial records.””
Daniel’s face changed.
“Vanessa.””
She ignored him.
“Marcus was stealing from people.””
The words hung in the room.
I stared at her.
“What does that have to do with my mother?””
Vanessa looked at the letter.
“Your mother found proof.””
A chill went through me.
“Proof of what?””
“Proof that Marcus wasn’t working alone.””
Nobody moved.
I looked at Daniel.
“Who was he working with?””
Daniel didn’t answer.
That silence was an answer.
My stomach dropped.
“Dad.””
He closed his eyes.
“Maya…”
“Who?””
Vanessa whispered:
“Someone close.””
The room felt smaller.
I looked at both of them.
“Who?””
Before either of them could answer, there was a loud knock at the front door.
Everyone froze.
Daniel looked toward the entrance.
Vanessa’s face changed instantly.
Fear.
Not surprise.
Fear.
Someone outside knocked again.
Harder.
“Vanessa.””
A man’s voice came through the door.
My blood ran cold.
Because I had heard that voice before.
Not in person.
On the phone.
The voicemail.
The unknown caller who had left a message three nights earlier saying only:
You need to ask your family what they did.
Daniel stepped in front of me.
“Stay behind me.””
I stared at him.
“You know who that is.””
He didn’t answer.
The door opened slowly.
And a man stood there.
Older than my father.
Tired.
Angry.
His eyes immediately found Vanessa.
Then they moved to me.
“Maya.””
My heart stopped.
Nobody had introduced us.
But he knew my name.
He looked at the box on the table.
Then at the letter in my hand.
“I see you finally told her.””
Vanessa whispered:
“Marcus.””
The man smiled sadly.
“Hello, sister.””
I stared at him.
The person who had been hiding in the shadows.
The person connected to my stolen scholarship.
The person who knew the truth about my mother.
Marcus Reed stepped into the house.
May you like
And the first thing he said changed everything.
“Maya, your scholarship wasn’t the first thing Vanessa stole from you.””
