Chapter 6: The Night My Mother Disappeared
“The person who caused your mother’s death…”
My father’s voice broke.
“…was someone who was standing beside us all along.””
The room became silent.
Not quiet.
Silent.
The kind of silence that makes you hear your own heartbeat.
I looked at Daniel.
My father.
The person who had tucked me into bed when storms scared me.
The person who taught me how to ride a bike.
The person who promised me I would never have to face anything alone.
And now he was standing there, carrying a truth that had been hidden from me my entire life.
“Who?””
My voice barely came out.
Daniel looked down.
“I don’t know.””
The answer made me angry.
Not relieved.
Angry.
“You don’t know?””
I stepped closer.
“My mother died eighteen years ago.””
My eyes filled with tears.
“You’re telling me someone caused it, but you don’t know who?””
Daniel shook his head.
“I knew something was wrong.””
“Then why didn’t you tell me?””
“Because I was trying to protect you.””
I laughed bitterly.
“Everyone keeps saying that.””
I looked around the room.
“Protect me.””
My voice cracked.
“Protect me from the truth. Protect me from my dreams. Protect me from making my own choices.””
Nobody spoke.
Because they knew.
They all knew.
Marcus looked at Daniel.
“You never told her about the hospital.””
My father’s expression changed.
I turned toward him.
“The hospital?””
Daniel closed his eyes.
“Maya…”
“No.””
I shook my head.
“Not this time.””
I wiped my tears.
“I need every piece.””
Marcus slowly nodded.
“Your mother was supposed to meet someone the night she died.””
I looked at him.
“Who?””
Marcus hesitated.
“Me.””
Vanessa looked away.
My heart sank.
“You?””
Marcus nodded.
“She found out what Vanessa and I were doing.””
Vanessa immediately interrupted.
“Don’t make this sound like it was my fault.””
Marcus looked at her.
“It was.””
Her face hardened.
“You were the one who started stealing.””
“And you were the one who convinced Olivia to keep quiet.””
I looked between them.
“Wait.””
My voice shook.
“My mother knew about you two?””
Marcus nodded.
“Yes.””
“What did she do?””
“She threatened to expose us.””
I stared.
“That sounds like my mother.””
The small smile on Marcus’s face disappeared quickly.
“She was brave.””
Daniel looked away.
“She was too brave.””
I turned toward him.
“What does that mean?””
He didn’t answer.
Marcus continued.
“Olivia told me she had evidence.””
He opened the folder again.
“She planned to go to the authorities.””
Vanessa whispered:
“She didn’t understand what she was doing.””
I looked at her.
“No.””
My voice became cold.
“She understood exactly what she was doing.””
Vanessa flinched.
“She wanted to protect people.””
The words sounded strange coming from Vanessa.
Because Olivia had done what Vanessa never did.
She had protected someone else.
“She was going to expose everything,” Marcus said.
“Then what happened?””
Marcus looked at Daniel.
“I don’t know.””
My father spoke quietly.
“I found her car.””
Everyone looked at him.
“The night she disappeared.””
My breathing slowed.
“You found her car?””
Daniel nodded.
“It was abandoned near the old bridge.””
I felt a chill.
“The police said she lost control.””
Daniel looked down.
“They were wrong.””
“Why?””
“Because the brakes had been damaged.””
My hand covered my mouth.
For eighteen years, I believed my mother died because life was unfair.
Because sometimes people just disappeared.
Because accidents happened.
But now…
Someone had made a choice.
Someone had taken her away from me.
“Did the police know?””
Daniel shook his head.
“I tried to tell them.””
“Tried?””
His jaw tightened.
“The evidence disappeared.””
Marcus looked at Vanessa.
“And that’s when things changed.””
I followed his gaze.
“Why are you looking at her?””
Vanessa immediately stood.
“I had nothing to do with that.””
Marcus didn’t respond.
But his silence was loud.
I looked at my stepmother.
“Vanessa.””
She stared at me.
“I’m asking you.””
Her expression broke slightly.
“I loved your father.””
“That’s not an answer.””
She looked away.
“I loved this family.””
My heart hurt.
“Then why did you destroy it?””
She sat down.
“I didn’t know what was going to happen.””
Daniel looked at her.
“You knew enough.””
Vanessa’s eyes filled.
“I knew Marcus was desperate.””
Marcus laughed.
“Don’t.””
“I knew he was making mistakes.””
“Mistakes?””
Marcus’s voice became angry.
“You knew Olivia found the records.””
Vanessa said nothing.
“You knew she was meeting me.””
Still nothing.
“You knew she was going to expose everything.””
Daniel looked at Vanessa.
“What is he saying?””
Vanessa closed her eyes.
“I didn’t hurt Olivia.””
Nobody moved.
The way she said it was strange.
Not “I don’t know anything.””
Not “Marcus is lying.””
Just:
I didn’t hurt Olivia.
My stomach twisted.
Because that wasn’t the same thing.
I looked at Daniel.
“Dad.””
He looked devastated.
“What?””
“Did you ever suspect her?””
He didn’t answer.
That was answer enough.
A tear rolled down my face.
“You suspected my own stepmother?””
“I didn’t want to believe it.””
“But you did.””
Daniel looked away.
“I was scared.””
I shook my head.
“Everyone was scared.””
I looked at Marcus.
“You were scared.””
Then Vanessa.
“You were scared.””
Then my father.
“You were scared.””
My voice broke.
“But I was the one who lost my mother.””
Nobody spoke.
A long silence passed.
Then Marcus reached into the folder and removed a photograph.
He placed it on the table.
I looked down.
It was my mother.
Olivia.
Young.
Smiling.
Standing beside someone.
My eyes moved to the person next to her.
I froze.
“Who is that?””
Nobody answered.
Because I recognized him.
Not from memory.
From the picture on my father’s desk.
A man I thought was just an old family friend.
My father’s closest friend.
The man who had attended every birthday party when I was little.
The man who disappeared when I turned ten.
“Dad…”
Daniel stared at the photograph.
His face turned pale.
“Maya.””
“Who is he?””
Daniel whispered:
“Ethan.””
“Ethan who?””
My father didn’t answer.
Marcus did.
“Ethan Walker.””
The name meant nothing to me.
Until Marcus said the next words.
“He was the last person to see your mother alive.””
The room tilted.
“No.””
Marcus nodded slowly.
“Yes.””
My eyes moved back to the photograph.
My mother was smiling beside him.
She trusted him.
My father looked broken.
“Ethan was my best friend.””
I stared at him.
“You never told me about him.””
“Because after your mother died…”
He stopped.
“Because after your mother died, Ethan vanished.””
The pieces started connecting.
The scholarship.
The documents.
The secret box.
My mother’s warning.
Someone had spent years hiding the truth.
And now someone was trying to bring it back.
I looked at Marcus.
“Where is Ethan now?””
Marcus was silent.
Too silent.
“Marcus.””
He looked at me.
“He’s been watching you.””
A chill went through me.
“What?””
“He knew about the scholarship.””
My heart raced.
“How?””
Marcus looked at the front window.
At the street outside.
Then back at me.
“Because he’s the reason Mr. Harris found the missing records.””
I frowned.
“That doesn’t make sense.””
Marcus’s expression darkened.
“It does when you know what Ethan wants.””
“What does he want?””
Marcus lowered his voice.
“The same thing he wanted eighteen years ago.””
I waited.
“The truth buried forever.””
At that moment, my phone buzzed.
Everyone looked at me.
I didn’t recognize the number.
One message.
One sentence.
My blood ran cold.
I opened it.
*Stop digging into your mother’s death.*
A second message appeared.
*Or you’ll lose more than a scholarship.*
I stared at the screen.
Then slowly looked up.
Because outside the window…
May you like
a black car had stopped in front of the house.
And someone inside was watching us.
