Chapter 5: The Truth My Mother Left Behind
The sentence didn’t make sense.
Not at first.
I stood there holding my mother’s letter while Marcus Reed stood in the doorway, looking at me like he had been waiting years for this moment.
“Your scholarship wasn’t the first thing Vanessa stole from you.””
My fingers tightened around the paper.
“What does that mean?””
Nobody answered.
Not my father.
Not Vanessa.
Not even Marcus.
They all looked at each other like they were silently arguing over who would break me first.
I hated that.
I hated being the last person to know.
“Stop.””
My voice cut through the room.
Everyone looked at me.
“I’m done watching all of you exchange looks like I’m not standing here.””
I stepped closer to Marcus.
“You came here because you know something. So say it.””
Marcus studied my face.
For a moment, his expression softened.
“You look like Olivia.””
My heart skipped.
Nobody had said that to me before.
Not like that.
Not with sadness.
“Don’t talk about my mother like you knew her.””
Marcus looked toward Daniel.
“I knew her better than he wants you to believe.””
Daniel immediately stepped forward.
“That’s enough.””
Marcus laughed quietly.
“There he is.””
“Leave.””
“No.””
Marcus looked around the room.
“You spent years pretending everything was fine. The perfect husband. The perfect father. The perfect family.””
His eyes moved to Vanessa.
“And the perfect wife.””
Vanessa’s face hardened.
“You don’t get to come here and act innocent.””
Marcus nodded slowly.
“You’re right.””
The admission surprised me.
“I’m not innocent.””
He reached into his jacket and pulled out a folder.
Daniel immediately moved.
“What is that?””
“Evidence.””
Marcus placed it on the table.
“Something I should have given Olivia years ago.””
My eyes moved to the folder.
The room suddenly felt colder.
“Why didn’t you?””
Marcus looked down.
“Because I was afraid.””
The honesty caught me off guard.
“You were afraid?””
“Yes.””
He looked at me.
“And people do terrible things when they’re afraid.””
I looked at Vanessa.
She looked away.
That told me more than words could.
“What’s in the folder?””
Marcus didn’t answer immediately.
Instead, he looked at Daniel.
“You tell her.””
Daniel’s jaw tightened.
“Marcus.””
“You owe her.””
The two men stared at each other.
Years of anger existed between them.
Years of something I couldn’t see.
Finally, my father sat down.
For the first time in my life, he looked old.
Not physically.
Emotionally.
“Maya…”
I waited.
“I met your mother when I was twenty-five.””
I swallowed.
“I know.””
“No.””
He shook his head.
“You know the version I gave you.””
The words hurt.
Because they were true.
Daniel looked at the letter in my hand.
“Your mother was brilliant. She noticed things other people missed.””
He paused.
“She trusted people too easily.””
Marcus looked away.
“And that got her hurt.””
My eyes moved between them.
“What happened?””
Daniel took a deep breath.
“Your mother discovered Marcus was involved in a financial scheme.””
Marcus nodded.
“I was.””
The room went silent.
I looked at him.
“You admit it?””
“Yes.””
No excuses.
No denial.
Just the truth.
“I made mistakes.””
Vanessa crossed her arms.
“Mistakes?””
Marcus looked at her.
“You don’t get to judge me.””
Her expression changed.
“You destroyed everything.””
Marcus’s eyes became darker.
“No.””
He pointed toward her.
“You did.””
My heart started beating faster.
“What does that mean?””
Marcus opened the folder.
Inside were copies of documents.
Bank records.
Emails.
Contracts.
My head spun.
“These records show Marcus was stealing money,” Daniel explained.
Marcus nodded.
“But Olivia discovered something else.””
He pulled out one page.
“She found payments being transferred into another account.””
My eyes moved across the document.
I didn’t understand everything.
But I saw a name.
Vanessa Reed.
My stomach dropped.
I looked up.
“What?””
Vanessa immediately stepped forward.
“That doesn’t prove anything.””
Marcus looked at her.
“You were my partner.””
“No.””
“You helped me move the money.””
“I helped you hide from your mistakes.””
The words came out too quickly.
Everyone froze.
Because Vanessa had just admitted something.
Even she realized it.
Her face changed.
“I didn’t mean—”
Daniel stood up.
“What did you just say?””
Vanessa looked at him.
“Daniel…”
“No.””
His voice was quiet.
Dangerously quiet.
“What did you just admit?””
She looked away.
Marcus shook his head.
“Tell him.””
Vanessa’s eyes filled with anger.
“You have no right.””
“I have every right.””
Marcus pointed at the documents.
“You blamed me for everything.””
“You deserved blame.””
“Maybe.””
He nodded.
“But so did you.””
I felt like I was watching strangers.
Not my family.
Not the people I trusted.
Strangers.
“Why?”” I whispered.
Everyone looked at me.
I looked at Vanessa.
“Why would you do any of this?””
Her face changed.
For the first time, she looked less like someone defending herself and more like someone who was tired of carrying a lie.
“I was trying to survive.””
I shook my head.
“No.””
My voice cracked.
“You were trying to control everything.””
She looked at me.
“You don’t understand what it feels like to lose everything.””
I almost laughed.
“Lose everything?””
I pointed toward myself.
“You took away my future.””
Her eyes softened.
“Maya…”
“No.””
Tears filled my eyes.
“You watched me cry over that rejection letter.””
Silence.
“You watched me think I wasn’t smart enough.””
Silence.
“You watched me blame myself.””
Vanessa looked down.
And that was the worst part.
Because she knew.
She knew exactly what she had done.
“I didn’t know the scholarship would come back,” she whispered.
The room froze.
I stared at her.
“What?””
She realized too late.
Marcus looked at her.
“You knew.””
Vanessa shook her head.
“No.””
“You knew there was a chance.””
“No.””
Marcus stepped closer.
“You didn’t just cancel the scholarship.””
His voice lowered.
“You intercepted the university’s second notice.””
My breath stopped.
Daniel turned toward Vanessa.
“What second notice?””
She said nothing.
“Maya was offered another opportunity,” Marcus said.
I looked at him.
“What opportunity?””
He opened another document.
“The university sent a revised package after reviewing your application again.””
My hands started shaking.
“They contacted the family because the first message appeared suspicious.””
I stared.
“And?””
Marcus looked at Vanessa.
“She deleted the email.””
The room went silent.
Daniel looked at his wife.
“You deleted it?””
Vanessa whispered:
“I panicked.””
My father stepped back.
“You stole months of my daughter’s life because you panicked?””
“I was scared.””
“Of what?””
Vanessa looked at me.
And her answer broke something inside me.
“Of losing you.””
I stared at her.
That wasn’t the answer I expected.
“You thought ruining my future would make me stay?””
She cried quietly.
“I thought if you left, everyone would forget about me.””
I shook my head.
“That wasn’t love.””
The words came out softly.
But they hurt.
“No matter how much you wanted me close, you had no right to make my world smaller.””
Vanessa looked away.
For once, she had nothing to say.
Marcus closed the folder.
“There’s still something you don’t know.””
I looked at him.
“Of course there is.””
He looked at Daniel.
“Tell her about the night Olivia died.””
My father froze.
The room went completely still.
My heart dropped.
“What?””
Daniel’s face changed.
“No.””
Marcus stepped forward.
“You promised her you would tell Maya one day.””
“Not like this.””
“Then when?””
I looked at my father.
“Dad?””
He couldn’t meet my eyes.
And suddenly, I understood.
The scholarship.
The lies.
The hidden documents.
The box.
None of it was the beginning.
It was just the first crack in a story that had been buried for eighteen years.
“What happened the night my mother died?””
Daniel closed his eyes.
A long silence followed.
Then he whispered:
“Your mother didn’t die in an accident.””
I stopped breathing.
“What?””
Marcus looked at Vanessa.
And Vanessa looked terrified.
Daniel’s voice broke.
“Someone tried to silence her.””
My heart pounded.
“Who?””
Nobody answered.
Then my father looked directly at me.
And the next words changed everything I thought I knew about my family.
“The person who caused your mother’s death…”
May you like
He swallowed.
“…was someone who was standing beside us all along.””
