Chapter 7: The Man Who Watched From the Shadows
The black car sat across the street.
Engine running.
Windows tinted.
Someone was inside.
Watching.
My fingers went numb around my phone.
Nobody spoke.
Not because we didn’t have questions.
Because we suddenly had too many.
Daniel walked toward the window slowly.
“Stay back.””
His voice was different.
Not the calm voice he used when he helped me study.
Not the joking voice he used when he cooked breakfast on Sundays.
This was the voice of someone who was afraid.
I followed him anyway.
“Maya.””
“I’m not a child.””
He stopped.
For a moment, he looked at me.
Then he nodded.
“I know.””
Outside, the car remained still.
Marcus stood behind us.
His face had lost all color.
“You need to leave.””
Daniel turned.
“What?””
Marcus looked at him.
“You need to get Maya somewhere safe.””
My father’s expression hardened.
“Don’t tell me what to do.””
“I’m serious.””
“So am I.””
Marcus stepped closer.
“You don’t understand.””
“No,” Daniel said.
“You don’t understand.””
He pointed toward the window.
“You show up after eighteen years. You bring old secrets into my house. You tell my daughter someone may have killed her mother. And now you’re telling me to run?””
Marcus didn’t back down.
“I’m telling you because I know what Ethan is capable of.””
The name hung in the room.
Ethan.
The person my father once trusted.
The person my mother trusted.
The person who disappeared.
I looked at Marcus.
“How do you know he’s involved?””
Marcus looked at me.
“Because he was there.””
My heart stopped.
“Where?””
“The night Olivia died.””
The room went quiet.
I stared at him.
“You said he was the last person to see her.””
Marcus nodded.
“But I never told you why.””
I waited.
Marcus looked down.
“Because Ethan was supposed to help her.””
Daniel’s face changed.
“What are you saying?””
Marcus swallowed.
“Olivia contacted me after she found the evidence.””
He looked at me.
“She knew she couldn’t trust many people anymore.””
My voice was quiet.
“But she trusted you?””
His expression tightened.
“I was her brother-in-law’s best friend. She thought I was someone who could help.””
Daniel looked away.
“Then what happened?””
Marcus took a breath.
“She called Ethan too.””
I frowned.
“Why?””
“Because Ethan had access.””
“To what?””
“Financial records. Company accounts. Information about where the money was moving.””
Daniel shook his head.
“That’s impossible.””
Marcus looked at him.
“Why?””
“Because Ethan helped me investigate after Olivia died.””
Marcus stared at him.
“And did he find anything?””
Daniel froze.
No answer.
I felt a cold wave move through me.
“He lied.””
My father didn’t respond.
That was all I needed.
“He lied to you.””
Daniel sat down.
Slowly.
Like his body suddenly couldn’t hold him up.
“I trusted him.””
I looked at the man I loved most in the world.
And for the first time, I realized he wasn’t just grieving my mother.
He had been grieving the truth.
For eighteen years.
A knock suddenly hit the front door.
Everyone froze.
Three slow knocks.
Not rushed.
Not random.
A message.
Someone wanted us to know they were there.
Daniel moved in front of me.
Marcus whispered:
“He knows.””
Vanessa looked terrified.
“Marcus…”
He looked at her.
“What?””
Her voice shook.
“He knows you’re here.””
Marcus’s eyes narrowed.
“How?””
Vanessa didn’t answer.
And again, I noticed.
She always answered the wrong questions.
Not the important ones.
Daniel looked at her.
“What aren’t you telling us?””
Vanessa looked away.
Nothing.
Silence.
The knock came again.
Harder.
I grabbed the edge of the table.
My phone buzzed.
Everyone looked at me.
Another message.
This time, no words.
Just a photo.
My heart stopped.
It was a picture of me.
Standing outside the university.
Taken three days earlier.
I had never seen the person taking it.
Below the photo was a message.
*You were warned.*
I felt sick.
Daniel saw my face.
“What is it?””
I handed him the phone.
The moment he saw the image, his expression changed.
“He’s been following you.””
I swallowed.
“For how long?””
Nobody knew.
And that was the worst part.
Marcus walked toward the door.
Daniel grabbed his arm.
“No.””
Marcus looked at him.
“If it’s Ethan, I need to see him.””
“You’re not going anywhere.””
Marcus pulled away.
“You still think you can protect everyone.””
Daniel’s face hardened.
“And you think destroying everything is the same as telling the truth.””
The two men stared at each other.
Then Marcus said something unexpected.
“I’m sorry.””
Daniel froze.
For a second, the anger disappeared.
Only pain remained.
Marcus lowered his voice.
“I should have told Olivia the truth sooner.””
Daniel looked away.
“She trusted you.””
“I know.””
“And you failed her.””
Marcus nodded.
“Yes.””
The honesty surprised me.
But before anyone could say anything else, the door handle moved.
Someone was trying to open it.
Vanessa gasped.
Nobody had locked the front door.
Daniel reached for the handle first.
“No,” I whispered.
He looked back.
“It’s okay.””
But his face said the opposite.
He opened the door.
Nobody was there.
Only a small envelope placed on the porch.
Daniel picked it up carefully.
A name was written on the front.
Maya.
My stomach dropped.
“Why is it addressed to me?””
Nobody answered.
Daniel brought it inside.
Marcus stared at the envelope.
“Don’t open it.””
I looked at him.
“Why?””
His face was serious.
“Because Ethan doesn’t send messages.””
I frowned.
“What does he do?””
Marcus looked at the envelope.
“He leaves reminders.””
The room went silent.
I opened it anyway.
Inside was a single photograph.
I pulled it out.
And my hands started shaking.
It was a picture of my mother.
But not the old family photo.
This one was different.
It was taken the night she died.
She was standing outside near a car.
Beside her was Ethan.
But that wasn’t what terrified me.
It was the person taking the picture.
In the corner of the image, reflected in the car window…
was someone else.
Someone watching them.
Someone standing behind the camera.
I looked closer.
Then I felt my blood run cold.
Because I recognized the face.
“No…”
Daniel looked at me.
“What?””
I handed him the photo.
He stared.
Then stepped back.
“That’s impossible.””
Marcus took the picture.
His expression changed instantly.
Vanessa covered her mouth.
Because the person in the reflection wasn’t Ethan.
It wasn’t Marcus.
It wasn’t some stranger.
It was someone we all knew.
Someone who had been in my life since childhood.
Someone who had smiled in family photographs.
Someone who had spent years pretending to protect me.
I whispered the name.
“Vanessa.””
Nobody moved.
Because the picture proved something impossible.
My stepmother had been there the night my mother died.
And she wasn’t alone.
Daniel looked at Vanessa.
His voice was barely audible.
“Why were you at the bridge that night?””
Vanessa didn’t answer.
She just stared at the photograph.
Then, finally, she whispered:
“Because Olivia called me.””
My heart stopped.
“What?””
Vanessa looked at me.
And the fear in her eyes was worse than any confession.
“She called me because she knew she was in danger.””
I stepped closer.
“What did she tell you?””
Vanessa’s lips trembled.
“She told me who was trying to hurt her.””
The room became still.
“Who?””
Vanessa looked at Daniel.
Then at Marcus.
Then back at me.
And she said the one thing none of us expected.
“She said the person she feared most…”
May you like
A tear rolled down her cheek.
“…was your father.””
