Chapter 8: The Lie My Father Carried

“She said the person she feared most…”

Vanessa’s voice trembled.

“…was your father.””

The words didn’t make sense.

Not because I didn’t hear them.

Because I did.

Every syllable.

Every accusation.

Every second of silence afterward.

I looked at Daniel.

My father.

The man who taught me how to tie my shoes.

The man who stayed awake beside my bed when I had the flu.

The man who just hours ago stood in front of me and promised to uncover the truth.

And now…

Someone was saying my mother feared him.

“No.””

The word left my mouth before I even realized I had spoken.

Vanessa looked at me.

“Maya—”

“No.””

I shook my head.

“You don’t get to say that and just stand there.””

Daniel didn’t move.

He looked like he had aged years in a few seconds.

“Dad.””

He opened his mouth.

Nothing came out.

That scared me more than anything.

Because innocent people usually rush to explain.

They defend themselves.

They demand answers.

But my father just stood there.

Silent.

Marcus watched him carefully.

“Daniel.””

My father looked at him.

“Don’t.””

Marcus’s expression hardened.

“You need to tell her.””

Daniel looked away.

My chest tightened.

“Tell me what?””

No answer.

I stepped closer.

“Dad.””

Finally, he looked at me.

And the pain in his eyes almost made me forget my anger.

Almost.

“Maya, your mother was scared that night.””

My heart sank.

“Of you?””

He swallowed.

“Not the way Vanessa is making it sound.””

Vanessa laughed softly.

A sad, bitter sound.

“Of course that’s what you’ll say.””

Daniel turned toward her.

“You don’t get to rewrite what happened.””

“And you don’t get to pretend you were innocent.””

The room became a battlefield.

A battle that started long before I was born.

I looked at Marcus.

“Who is telling the truth?””

Nobody answered.

That was the problem.

Everyone had a piece.

Everyone had a secret.

And somehow, I was the only person who didn’t know the whole story.

Marcus slowly walked toward the table.

“Eighteen years ago, Olivia discovered the money trail.””

He looked at me.

“She found out Vanessa and I were moving stolen funds.””

Vanessa looked down.

“But she also discovered something else.””

“What?””

Marcus glanced at Daniel.

“She discovered Daniel had been hiding financial problems.””

I turned toward my father.

“What?””

Daniel closed his eyes.

“Maya.””

“No.””

My voice shook.

“What does that mean?””

Marcus continued.

“Before Olivia died, Daniel’s company was failing.””

I stared at my father.

He didn’t deny it.

“You never told me.””

“I was trying to fix it.””

“By yourself?””

He nodded.

“I didn’t want your mother to worry.””

Marcus’s voice was quiet.

“But Olivia found out.””

My hands shook.

“And she thought you were involved?””

Daniel looked at the floor.

“At first.””

I froze.

“At first?””

He looked at me.

“Your mother thought everyone around her was hiding something.””

Vanessa crossed her arms.

“Because everyone was.””

Nobody argued.

Because it was true.

Daniel continued.

“She confronted me that night.””

“About what?””

“About the money.””

My stomach twisted.

“What money?””

He took a deep breath.

“Someone had been moving money through my company accounts.””

I looked at Marcus.

“And you?””

Marcus nodded.

“I was part of it.””

Daniel looked at him.

“But Olivia thought I was involved.””

“Were you?””

The question came out before I could stop it.

Everyone looked at me.

My father looked hurt.

But he answered.

“No.””

A pause.

“No, Maya.””

His voice cracked.

“I was struggling. I made mistakes. I hid things because I was ashamed.””

He stepped closer.

“But I never stole from anyone.””

I wanted to believe him.

I did.

But after everything…

Belief felt dangerous.

Vanessa looked at Daniel.

“Then why didn’t you tell Olivia?””

He didn’t answer.

That silence hurt.

Because it meant there was something.

Something he regretted.

“I was afraid,” Daniel whispered.

“Of what?””

“That she would see me differently.””

I looked at him.

“She was your wife.””

“I know.””

“Your partner.””

“I know.””

“Then why?””

His eyes filled.

“Because I was embarrassed.””

For a moment, I saw him.

Not as my father.

As a person.

A person who had made mistakes.

But mistakes didn’t erase secrets.

And secrets had consequences.

Marcus placed both hands on the table.

“Olivia confronted all of us.””

“All of you?””

He nodded.

“She called Vanessa.””

Vanessa looked away.

“She called me.””

“She called me.””

Marcus looked at Daniel.

“And she called Daniel.””

I whispered:

“What did she say?””

Nobody answered immediately.

Then Vanessa spoke.

“She said she knew someone was lying.””

My eyes moved toward her.

“What did she tell you?””

Vanessa looked at the photograph.

“She said she didn’t know who to trust.””

A tear rolled down her face.

“She asked me to meet her.””

The room went silent.

“You met her?””

Vanessa nodded.

“Yes.””

“Why didn’t you tell anyone?””

Her face changed.

Because she knew the answer.

“Because I was afraid.””

I almost laughed.

Everyone was afraid.

Everyone.

“What happened at the bridge?””

Vanessa looked at the floor.

“I arrived late.””

“And?””

“She was already arguing with someone.””

My heartbeat increased.

“With who?””

Vanessa looked at Daniel.

My father’s face changed.

“No.””

Vanessa whispered:

“With you.””

The room exploded into silence.

I stared at Daniel.

“You were there?””

He nodded slowly.

“Yes.””

My world shifted.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because I didn’t want you to remember me as the last person your mother fought with.””

My eyes filled.

“What happened?””

Daniel looked away.

“She accused me of hiding things.””

“Was she wrong?””

He swallowed.

“No.””

The honesty hurt.

“She said she was going to expose everything.””

“What did you do?””

His face broke.

“I left.””

I stared.

“You left?””

“Yes.””

“You left her there?””

He nodded.

“I was angry.””

The words were barely audible.

“I said things I regret.””

“What things?””

Daniel looked at me.

And I saw the pain before he spoke.

“I told her maybe everyone would be better off if she stopped trying to save people who didn’t want saving.””

I covered my mouth.

No.

No.

That couldn’t be the last thing my father said to my mother.

“But she was alive when you left?””

Daniel nodded.

“Yes.””

“Then what happened?””

His eyes moved toward Vanessa.

And suddenly everyone looked at her.

She froze.

“What?””

Daniel’s voice was quiet.

“You were there.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“I told you.””

“You said you arrived late.””

“I did.””

“But you saw her.””

Vanessa looked down.

“Yes.””

My heart pounded.

“What happened after my father left?””

Vanessa didn’t answer.

“Vanessa.””

Her hands started shaking.

“I heard them arguing.””

“Who?””

She looked at me.

“Olivia and Ethan.””

The room went cold.

“Ethan was there?””

Vanessa nodded.

“He came after Daniel left.””

Marcus stepped back.

“No.””

Vanessa looked at him.

“Yes.””

“That’s impossible.””

“I saw him.””

Marcus’s face changed.

Because that was the one thing he never expected.

Vanessa continued.

“Olivia told Ethan she had proof.””

“Proof of what?””

Vanessa closed her eyes.

“Proof that he was the person behind everything.””

Everyone froze.

Marcus whispered:

“No.””

I looked at him.

“What?””

His face was pale.

“Ethan wasn’t supposed to be involved.””

Vanessa looked at Daniel.

“He was.””

The room went silent.

Then my phone buzzed.

Everyone looked.

Another unknown message.

This time, only one sentence.

I opened it.

And my hands began to shake.

*Your father is telling you half the truth.*

A second message appeared.

*Ask him what happened after Olivia fell.*

I looked up slowly.

Daniel saw my face.

“What did it say?””

I didn’t answer.

Because suddenly there was another question.

A worse question.

Not whether my father caused my mother’s death.

But whether he had been hiding what happened afterward.

I stared at him.

“Dad…”

His expression changed.

Because he knew.

He knew exactly what message I had received.

And before I could ask, he whispered:

“I should have told you.””

My heart stopped.

“Told me what?””

Daniel looked toward the old box.

Toward my mother’s letter.

Toward the truth we had spent the entire day uncovering.

Then he said:

“What happened after Olivia fell wasn’t the worst part.””

A chill went through me.

“What was?””

My father looked at me.

“The worst part was…”

May you like

He paused.

“…she wasn’t alone when it happened.””
