Chapter 10: The Truth Raven Seven Was Built to Reveal

The sound of helicopters filled the mountain air.

Not one.

Not two.

An entire formation.

The abandoned facility shook beneath the force of approaching aircraft, dust falling from the ceiling as the rotors grew louder.

Nia stood in the darkness.

Her father’s final warning echoed in her mind.

*Run.*

But she didn’t move.

Not because she wasn’t afraid.

Because she had spent her entire life running from a truth she never knew existed.

She was done running.

The emergency lights returned.

Red.

Cold.

Warning.

Cole moved toward the entrance.

“Cole: We need to leave now.””

Reed looked at the security screens.

“Colonel Reed: It’s too late.””

Nia turned.

“Lt. Carter: Why?””

Reed pointed.

The cameras showed soldiers surrounding the facility.

Not regular soldiers.

Elite.

Organized.

And leading them was a man walking calmly through the front gate.

A man in a general’s uniform.

General Thomas Vale.

The name that had haunted Nightfall.

The man who had been hidden behind every secret.

Nia watched him approach.

“Lt. Carter: That’s him.””

Daniel’s voice came through the speaker.

“Yes.””

She looked at the screen.

Her father was silent.

Like seeing Vale again had brought back every painful memory.

The facility doors unlocked.

Everyone turned.

The lights above the entrance flickered.

Then a voice came through the speakers.

“General Vale: Marcus.””

Reed stepped forward.

“Colonel Reed: Thomas.””

Vale laughed softly.

“General Vale: After all these years, you still look surprised.””

Reed’s face hardened.

“Colonel Reed: You should have stayed hidden.””

Vale smiled.

“General Vale: Hidden?””

He walked through the facility entrance with several armed soldiers behind him.

“No, Marcus.””

A pause.

“I was waiting.””

Nia watched him carefully.

He wasn’t angry.

He wasn’t nervous.

He looked like a man arriving exactly where he planned to be.

His eyes moved to her.

And immediately, he smiled.

Not warmly.

Not kindly.

Like someone looking at something he had spent years searching for.

“General Vale: Raven Seven.””

Nia felt uncomfortable.

She stepped forward.

“Lt. Carter: My name is Nia Carter.””

Vale smiled.

“General Vale: That’s what your father wanted you to believe.””

The words made her angry.

“Lt. Carter: You don’t know me.””

Vale tilted his head.

“Oh, I know you better than anyone.””

Cole raised his weapon.

“Cole: Take one more step and—”

Vale didn’t even look at him.

“General Vale: Sergeant Cole.””

Cole froze.

“General Vale: Still loyal to a dead man.””

The insult hit.

Cole tightened his grip.

“Cole: You killed my team.””

Vale smiled.

“No.””

A pause.

“General Vale: Daniel Carter killed your team.””

Everyone went still.

Nia looked at him.

“Lt. Carter: You’re lying.””

Vale looked at her.

“General Vale: Am I?””

He nodded toward Reed.

“General Vale: Ask him.””

Nia turned.

Reed’s silence made her stomach drop.

“Lt. Carter: Colonel.””

Reed looked at her.

“Lt. Carter: Tell me.””

Reed said nothing.

Vale smiled.

“General Vale: There it is.””

He walked closer.

“The great Marcus Reed.””

He looked around.

“General Vale: The man who convinced everyone he was the hero.””

Reed’s voice was cold.

“Colonel Reed: You don’t know what you’re talking about.””

Vale laughed.

“I know exactly what happened.””

He looked at Nia.

“General Vale: Your father discovered Nightfall was compromised.””

A pause.

“He panicked.””

Nia shook her head.

“No.””

Vale continued.

“General Vale: He created Raven Seven because he wanted someone to continue his work.””

He pointed at her.

“You.””

Nia’s expression changed.

“Lt. Carter: Continue what?””

Vale smiled.

“The mission.””

Silence.

“General Vale: Your father wasn’t protecting you from Nightfall.””

He stepped closer.

“He was preparing you to finish it.””

Nia looked at Daniel’s image on the screen.

Her father looked broken.

Because Vale’s words touched something real.

“Lt. Carter: Dad?””

Daniel remained silent.

Then quietly:

“Daniel Carter: He’s twisting the truth.””

Vale smiled.

“General Vale: Am I?””

He looked at the screen.

“General Vale: Tell her, Daniel.””

Daniel didn’t respond.

Nia felt her anger return.

“Lt. Carter: Tell me.””

A long pause.

Then her father spoke.

“Daniel Carter: I did create Raven Seven.””

The words hit.

Nia stared.

“Lt. Carter: Why?””

Daniel looked directly at her.

“Daniel Carter: Because I knew someone had to finish what we started.””

“Lt. Carter: We?””

“Daniel Carter: Me and Reed.””

She looked at Reed.

Then back at him.

“Lt. Carter: So everyone lied.””

Daniel looked devastated.

“Yes.””

The answer hurt.

Because it was true.

“Daniel Carter: But not for the reasons you think.””

Vale stepped forward.

“General Vale: Enough.””

He looked at Nia.

“General Vale: You want the truth?””

He pointed toward the control room.

“General Vale: The final Nightfall file is inside this facility.””

Everyone froze.

Reed immediately moved.

“Colonel Reed: No.””

Vale smiled.

“General Vale: Still afraid of what she’ll see?””

Nia looked at Reed.

“Lt. Carter: What file?””

Reed didn’t answer.

That was enough.

She walked toward the terminal.

“Nia.””

She stopped.

Reed’s voice was quiet.

“Colonel Reed: If you open that file, there is no going back.””

She looked at him.

“Lt. Carter: There was never going back.””

She accessed the system.

A final file appeared.

*NIGHTFALL: TRUE OBJECTIVE*

Her finger hovered.

Then pressed.

The screen opened.

A video appeared.

Daniel Carter.

The same recording system.

But older.

More serious.

“Daniel Carter: If this file is opened, Raven Seven is active.””

Nia watched.

“Daniel Carter: That means either I failed…”

A pause.

“Daniel Carter: Or my daughter found the truth.””

The video showed documents.

Not about genetics.

Not about experiments.

Something else.

A list of names.

Military officers.

Officials.

Commanders.

And beside each name:

*COMPROMISED.*

Nia stared.

“Lt. Carter: What is this?””

Reed answered.

“Colonel Reed: The real purpose of Nightfall.””

Daniel continued.

“Daniel Carter: The enemy was never one person.””

The screen changed.

Thousands of files.

“Daniel Carter: It was a network.””

Vale’s expression finally changed.

For the first time.

Fear.

Daniel continued.

“Daniel Carter: General Vale was only one piece.””

Everyone looked at Vale.

He stepped backward.

“No.””

Daniel’s voice continued.

“Daniel Carter: But the most dangerous person was the one who had access to every investigation.””

The screen highlighted one final name.

A name that made Nia freeze.

Because it was not Vale.

It was not Reed.

It was not Cole.

It was someone she knew.

Someone she had trusted.

Someone who had been beside her since she arrived.

The name appeared.

*SERGEANT COLE — INFILTRATION ASSET.*

Nia slowly turned.

Cole looked at the screen.

His face went pale.

“Lt. Carter: Cole?””

He shook his head immediately.

“No.””

Reed grabbed his weapon.

“Colonel Reed: Don’t move.””

Cole looked betrayed.

“Cole: Sir, I didn’t know.””

Nia stared.

“Lt. Carter: You didn’t know what?””

Cole looked at her.

“The truth.””

Silence.

Then another file opened automatically.

A video from twelve years earlier.

A young Cole.

Standing beside Daniel Carter.

Daniel was handing him a device.

“Daniel Carter: If anything happens to me, protect her.””

Young Cole nodded.

“Cole: I swear.””

The video ended.

Everyone stood frozen.

The final message appeared.

*COLE WAS NOT THE TRAITOR.*

Nia looked at him.

Then another line appeared.

*COLE WAS THE LAST GUARDIAN.*

Vale suddenly moved.

He grabbed a weapon from one of his soldiers.

Everything happened at once.

Cole reacted.

Reed moved.

The soldiers scattered.

But Nia was faster.

She stepped directly in front of Vale.

“Lt. Carter: You lost.””

Vale stared.

“You don’t understand what you are.””

Nia looked at him.

“No.””

A pause.

“But I understand who I choose to be.””

She activated the final Nightfall file.

Every stolen document.

Every hidden operation.

Every name.

Was transmitted.

Across military networks.

Across government systems.

Across the world.

Vale looked at the screens.

“No.””

Reed watched the upload complete.

“Colonel Reed: It’s over.””

Vale stared at Nia.

“You think exposing the truth fixes everything?””

Nia looked at him.

“No.””

She glanced at her father’s image.

“At least now people get to decide what happens next.””

Weeks later, the official investigations began.

The Nightfall network was exposed.

Commanders resigned.

Hidden operations were reviewed.

The truth finally reached the people who had spent years searching for it.

Nia stood on the same training yard where her story began.

The same place where she had carried heavy equipment.

The same place where Cole tried to break her.

Only now, everyone knew who she was.

Not Raven Seven.

Not a project.

Not evidence.

Just Nia Carter.

Cole approached.

“Cole: You know, for the record, I was trying to protect you that first day.””

She smiled slightly.

“Lt. Carter: You were terrible at it.””

He laughed.

“Cole: Fair.””

A helicopter flew overhead.

Black.

Military.

But this time, Nia didn’t feel fear.

She looked toward the sky.

Her father still wasn’t home.

The investigation was not finished.

Some questions remained.

But she finally understood something.

The truth wasn’t something that saved you.

Sometimes the truth was something you fought for.

Her phone buzzed.

Unknown number.

She answered.

“Lt. Carter: Hello?””

A familiar voice.

Older.

Tired.

But alive.

“Daniel Carter: You always hated unfinished missions.””

Nia froze.

Then smiled.

“Lt. Carter: Dad.””

A pause.

“Daniel Carter: I’m sorry.””

She looked across the base.

At the soldiers.

At the life she had built.

At the future she had chosen.

“Lt. Carter: I know.””

Silence.

Then:

“Lt. Carter: But you’re coming home.””

Her father breathed out.

A quiet laugh.

“Daniel Carter: Yes.””

The call ended.

Nia looked toward the helicopter.

The same machine that once carried secrets.

The same sound that once announced danger.

Now it sounded different.

Like a beginning.

Because the soldier they tried to break had become the person who exposed them all.

May you like

And the daughter they tried to hide…

became the truth they could never bury.
