Chapter 6: The Betrayal Inside the Truth
The message remained on every screen across the military base.
*COLONEL REED IS ALREADY GONE.*
For several seconds, nobody moved.
Then the building erupted.
Footsteps thundered through the halls.
Security alarms echoed from every direction.
Soldiers shouted instructions over radios.
Doors locked automatically.
The entire base shifted from routine operations into emergency response.
But inside the equipment room, Nia only stared at the screen.
Her mind was trapped between two impossible realities.
Her father’s warning.
And the message.
Both pointed at the same person.
Colonel Marcus Reed.
The man who had claimed he protected her.
The man who had hidden the truth.
The man her father apparently blamed.
Cole stood frozen beside her.
His face had lost all color.
“Lt. Carter: Say something.””
Nia didn’t look at him.
“Cole: Lieutenant.””
She finally turned.
“Lt. Carter: Did my father trust you?””
Cole hesitated.
That hesitation answered more than words.
“Lt. Carter: Did he?””
Cole looked down.
“Yes.””
“Lt. Carter: Then why didn’t he tell me about Reed?””
Cole didn’t answer.
Nia stepped closer.
“Lt. Carter: Why did he leave a note saying Reed betrayed him?””
Cole swallowed.
“Cole: Because your father believed someone had access to everything.””
“Lt. Carter: Including him?””
“Yes.””
“Lt. Carter: Including you?””
Cole nodded.
Nia looked back at the screen.
The message was gone now.
Replaced by emergency instructions.
But the damage was done.
Someone wanted them to believe Reed was the enemy.
And someone wanted them to panic.
“Lt. Carter: Where is he?””
Cole looked confused.
“Cole: Who?””
“Lt. Carter: Reed.””
A pause.
Then Cole checked his radio.
Nothing.
He tried again.
Still nothing.
“Cole: No response.””
Nia grabbed her gear.
“Lt. Carter: Then we find him.””
Cole stepped in front of her.
“Cole: That may not be a good idea.””
She stared.
“Lt. Carter: Why?””
“Cole: Because if Reed really betrayed your father, he may know you’re coming.””
Nia’s expression hardened.
“Lt. Carter: And if he didn’t?””
Cole had no answer.
That was the problem.
Nobody knew what was true anymore.
They found Colonel Reed in the underground command bunker.
Not running.
Not hiding.
Standing alone in front of a wall of classified files.
The door opened.
Reed turned.
His expression changed when he saw Nia.
Not surprise.
Recognition.
Like he had expected her.
“Colonel Reed: You saw the message.””
Nia walked inside.
Cole followed behind her.
“Lt. Carter: Did you betray my father?””
The question was direct.
No hesitation.
Reed looked at her.
Then slowly sat down.
“Colonel Reed: I was wondering how long it would take for Daniel’s message to reach you.””
Nia froze.
“Lt. Carter: You knew about the recording?””
“Yes.””
“Lt. Carter: You knew he left it?””
“Yes.””
Her anger rose.
“Lt. Carter: And you never told me?””
Reed looked tired.
“Colonel Reed: Because I knew what it would make you believe.””
She stepped closer.
“Lt. Carter: Maybe because it’s true.””
Silence.
Cole watched Reed carefully.
“Cole: Sir.””
Reed looked at him.
“Colonel Reed: Sergeant Cole.””
A pause.
“Colonel Reed: You kept the promise.””
Cole looked away.
Nia noticed.
“Lt. Carter: What promise?””
Neither man answered.
That made her even more frustrated.
“Lt. Carter: I’m done with secrets.””
Reed stood.
“Colonel Reed: Good.””
He walked toward the table.
“Colonel Reed: Because you’re finally ready for the truth.””
He placed a file in front of her.
The cover was old.
Worn.
The title was simple.
*OPERATION NIGHTFALL: ORIGINAL REPORT*
Nia opened it.
The first page contained a photograph.
Her father.
A younger Colonel Reed.
And several soldiers she didn’t recognize.
She looked at Reed.
“Lt. Carter: You were on the mission.””
Reed nodded.
“Yes.””
She flipped through the pages.
Reports.
Coordinates.
Communications.
Then she saw a name.
Daniel Carter.
Her eyes moved quickly.
“Lt. Carter: This says my father wasn’t investigating a leak.””
Reed nodded.
“Colonel Reed: He was investigating us.””
Nia looked up.
“What?””
Reed took a breath.
“Colonel Reed: Nightfall began as an operation to expose corruption inside military intelligence.””
He pointed to the file.
“Colonel Reed: Daniel believed someone inside our command structure was manipulating missions for personal gain.””
“Lt. Carter: And he suspected you?””
Reed didn’t flinch.
“Yes.””
The answer shocked her.
“Lt. Carter: Why?””
Reed looked at the photograph.
“Colonel Reed: Because I was the only person who knew everything he knew.””
Cole stepped forward.
“Cole: Sir, tell her the rest.””
Reed looked at him.
Then back at Nia.
“Colonel Reed: Your father discovered that the person leading the conspiracy was using Nightfall itself to hide their actions.””
Nia frowned.
“Lt. Carter: Someone created a fake mission?””
“Yes.””
“Lt. Carter: Why?””
Reed’s voice lowered.
“Colonel Reed: To remove everyone who could expose them.””
A cold silence filled the room.
“Lt. Carter: Your team.””
“Yes.””
“Lt. Carter: My father.””
“Yes.””
She stared.
“Lt. Carter: And you?””
Reed looked at her.
“No.””
That answer surprised her.
“Lt. Carter: Why not?””
A long pause.
“Colonel Reed: Because Daniel saved me.””
Nia said nothing.
Reed continued.
“Colonel Reed: The night of Nightfall, Daniel discovered the betrayal minutes before the operation began.””
He looked down.
“He had a choice.””
“Lt. Carter: What choice?””
“He could expose the traitor immediately and risk everyone dying.””
A pause.
“Colonel Reed: Or he could disappear and continue investigating from the shadows.””
Nia looked at the file.
“Lt. Carter: So he faked his death.””
“Yes.””
“Lt. Carter: And you helped him.””
“Yes.””
She stepped back.
“But his note says you betrayed him.””
Reed nodded slowly.
“Colonel Reed: Because that was the only way to keep the real enemy convinced.””
Nia stared.
“What are you saying?””
Reed looked directly at her.
“Colonel Reed: Daniel Carter knew someone would eventually find Raven Seven.””
A pause.
“Colonel Reed: He needed that person to believe I was the enemy.””
The room went quiet.
Nia looked at Cole.
Then back at Reed.
“Lt. Carter: Why?””
Reed answered.
“Colonel Reed: Because the person who killed Nightfall was someone who trusted me.””
A loud explosion interrupted the conversation.
Not close enough to damage the bunker.
But close enough to shake the walls.
The lights flickered.
The security system went offline.
Cole immediately reached for his weapon.
“Cole: We’re compromised.””
Reed moved toward the terminal.
The screens came back on.
One camera feed appeared.
The training yard.
Soldiers were moving into defensive positions.
But one person stood alone in the center.
Sergeant Cole.
Nia turned.
Cole was standing beside her.
She looked back at the screen.
The person on the camera was not Cole.
It was someone wearing his uniform.
Someone wearing his face.
The image zoomed closer.
A perfect copy.
Except for one detail.
The black symbol beneath the name patch.
Nia whispered:
“Lt. Carter: That’s impossible.””
Reed’s expression changed.
“Colonel Reed: No.””
He stared at the screen.
“Colonel Reed: It’s worse.””
The fake Cole looked directly into the security camera.
Then the speaker activated.
A familiar voice filled the bunker.
“Unknown Voice: Colonel Reed.””
Everyone froze.
The voice sounded exactly like Cole.
“Unknown Voice: You spent twelve years protecting the wrong Carter.””
Nia felt the room shift.
The fake Cole smiled.
“Unknown Voice: Because Daniel never told you the truth about your daughter.””
Reed went still.
Nia looked at him.
“Lt. Carter: My daughter?””
She stopped.
Because she knew what he meant.
The fake Cole continued.
“Unknown Voice: Raven Seven was never activated because of her father.””
A pause.
“Unknown Voice: It was activated because of what she is.””
The screen went black.
Then one final message appeared.
*NIA CARTER IS NOT THE LAST WITNESS.*
A second line appeared.
*SHE IS THE EVIDENCE.*
Nia turned slowly toward Reed.
“Lt. Carter: What does that mean?””
Reed looked at her.
And for the first time, she saw real fear in his eyes.
“Colonel Reed: It means Daniel was protecting you from the truth about yourself.””
The bunker lights shut off.
And in the darkness, Nia heard a voice coming through the emergency radio.
A voice she had not heard in twelve years.
Her father.
“Daniel Carter: Nia… if they told you what you are…”
Static interrupted.
May you like
Then the final words came through.
“…don’t believe them.””
