Chapter 8: The Memory She Was Never Meant to Recover

The frozen image on the screen burned into Nia’s mind.

A little girl.

A helicopter.

Her father.

And Colonel Marcus Reed standing behind them.

The room felt impossibly quiet.

Not because nobody had anything to say.

Because everyone was waiting for the same thing.

Nia’s reaction.

She stared at the screen.

At the younger version of herself.

At the man who had spent the last day claiming he protected her.

“Lt. Carter: Explain.””

Her voice was calm.

Too calm.

Reed knew that kind of calm.

It was the calm before someone stopped holding back.

“Colonel Reed: Nia…”

She raised a hand.

“Lt. Carter: No.””

The command in her voice surprised everyone.

Even Reed.

“Lt. Carter: You don’t get to say my name like you’re protecting me.””

She pointed at the screen.

“Lt. Carter: You were there.””

Reed looked at the image.

“Yes.””

“Lt. Carter: The night my father disappeared.””

“Yes.””

“Lt. Carter: The night everyone told me he died.””

Reed lowered his head.

“Yes.””

Nia took a step back.

Her mind searched through memories.

Fragments.

Sounds.

A helicopter.

Her father’s voice.

A hand holding hers.

Then darkness.

Always darkness.

“Lt. Carter: What happened to me?””

Reed didn’t answer.

Voss did.

“Commander Voss: Your father found out too late that you had seen everything.””

Nia looked at him.

“Lt. Carter: Seen what?””

Voss walked slowly around the room.

Like he owned the space.

“Commander Voss: You saw the people who came for Nightfall.””

He stopped.

“You saw who gave the order.””

Nia looked at Reed.

“Lt. Carter: Was it you?””

Reed looked directly at her.

For a moment, she thought he would deny it.

Instead, he said something worse.

“Colonel Reed: I was there when it happened.””

Her heart dropped.

“Lt. Carter: That’s not what I asked.””

Reed closed his eyes.

“Colonel Reed: No.””

A pause.

“Colonel Reed: It’s not.””

The answer felt like a wound opening.

Cole stepped between them.

“Cole: Sir, there’s something you’re not saying.””

Reed looked at him.

“Colonel Reed: There is.””

“Cole: Then say it.””

The colonel remained silent.

Nia stared at him.

“Lt. Carter: I’m done waiting.””

She walked toward the screen.

“Lt. Carter: Show me.””

Everyone looked at her.

“Lt. Carter: If I saw something that night, show me.””

Reed shook his head.

“No.””

The refusal made her angry.

“Lt. Carter: Why?””

“Because remembering it could hurt you.””

She laughed bitterly.

“Lt. Carter: Hurt me?””

She looked around the room.

“Lt. Carter: My father vanished. My entire childhood was built on a lie. Every person who claimed to protect me kept secrets.””

Her eyes returned to him.

“Lt. Carter: I think I can handle the truth.””

Reed was silent.

Then Voss smiled.

“Commander Voss: She’s stronger than you thought.””

Reed turned sharply.

“Colonel Reed: You don’t know anything about her.””

Voss smiled.

“Commander Voss: I know exactly who she is.””

That sentence made Nia look at him.

“Lt. Carter: What does that mean?””

Voss reached into his jacket.

The guards immediately raised their weapons.

But he pulled out only a small device.

A recording chip.

He placed it on the table.

“Commander Voss: Your father left this behind.””

Reed’s expression changed.

“Colonel Reed: Where did you get that?””

Voss looked at him.

“Commander Voss: From the place you were too afraid to return to.””

Cole stepped forward.

“Cole: What is it?””

Voss looked at Nia.

“Commander Voss: The memory recovery file.””

The room went silent.

Nia stared.

“Lt. Carter: Recovery?””

Reed’s face hardened.

“Colonel Reed: Elias, don’t.””

Voss ignored him.

“Commander Voss: When Daniel erased your memories, he didn’t destroy them.””

A pause.

“He hid them.””

Nia felt cold.

“Lt. Carter: Why?””

Voss looked at Reed.

“Commander Voss: Ask him.””

Everyone turned.

Reed looked exhausted.

“Colonel Reed: Because your memories were the only evidence.””

Nia frowned.

“Lt. Carter: Evidence of what?””

Reed answered quietly.

“Colonel Reed: The person who ordered the attack.””

The room waited.

Then he continued.

“Colonel Reed: You saw the person who betrayed Nightfall.””

Nia looked at the screen.

The image of Reed remained frozen.

“Lt. Carter: You.””

Reed didn’t respond.

The silence was almost confirmation.

Voss stepped closer.

“Commander Voss: That’s what Daniel wanted you to believe.””

Nia turned.

“What?””

Voss smiled.

“Commander Voss: Because your father knew the truth was more complicated.””

Reed looked at him.

“Colonel Reed: Stop.””

Voss ignored him.

“Commander Voss: Marcus Reed was not the traitor.””

Nia froze.

“What?””

Cole looked confused.

Voss continued.

“Commander Voss: He was the person Daniel trusted to protect the evidence.””

He looked at Reed.

“Commander Voss: But Daniel also knew Marcus had one weakness.””

Reed’s face tightened.

“Colonel Reed: Elias.””

Voss smiled.

“Commander Voss: His guilt.””

Nia looked between them.

Nothing made sense anymore.

“Lt. Carter: Someone explain.””

Reed finally spoke.

“Colonel Reed: The video is incomplete.””

Voss nodded.

“Commander Voss: Exactly.””

He tapped the device.

“The rest tells the real story.””

The recording began.

The screen showed a younger Nia.

Eight years old.

She stood outside the helicopter.

Her father was beside her.

The younger version of Daniel Carter smiled.

“Daniel Carter: Remember what I told you?””

Little Nia nodded.

“Young Nia: Stay brave.””

Daniel smiled.

“Daniel Carter: And?””

A pause.

“Young Nia: Ask questions.””

The adult Nia felt her chest tighten.

She remembered that.

Not the event.

The words.

Daniel crouched beside his daughter.

“Daniel Carter: Good.””

Then the recording changed.

The camera moved.

A group of soldiers approached.

One of them was Reed.

Younger.

Angrier.

Tired.

But not threatening.

Then another man appeared.

Someone Nia had never seen.

A man standing behind Reed.

Daniel immediately changed.

“Daniel Carter: Marcus…”

Young Reed turned.

“Marcus Reed: Daniel, listen to me.””

The audio became distorted.

But the message was clear.

Reed wasn’t attacking.

He was warning.

Then another voice appeared.

A voice giving orders.

“Unknown Voice: Take the girl.””

Nia stopped breathing.

The younger version of herself was pulled backward.

Daniel moved in front of her.

“Daniel Carter: No.””

The video shook.

Gunfire erupted.

The screen cut.

Then another memory appeared.

A hospital room.

Little Nia lying unconscious.

Daniel sitting beside her.

Reed standing behind him.

Daniel looked broken.

“Daniel Carter: She saw everything.””

Reed answered.

“Marcus Reed: Then we have to protect her.””

Daniel shook his head.

“No.””

A pause.

“Daniel Carter: We have to protect her from remembering.””

Nia watched herself sleeping.

Her father placed a hand on her forehead.

“Daniel Carter: I’m sorry, baby girl.””

The screen went dark.

Nobody spoke.

Then the final message appeared.

Recorded by Daniel.

*THE PERSON WHO STARTED NIGHTFALL IS NOT REED.*

Nia looked at Voss.

Then at Reed.

The next line appeared.

*THE PERSON WHO STARTED NIGHTFALL IS THE PERSON WHO MADE YOU BELIEVE REED WAS GUILTY.*

The room remained silent.

Until Cole noticed something.

“Cole: Wait.””

Everyone looked at him.

He pointed at the screen.

“Cole: There’s another file.””

A hidden folder appeared.

No title.

No label.

Only one word.

*ORIGIN.*

Nia reached toward the keyboard.

Before she could open it, the bunker doors suddenly locked.

The lights turned red.

An automated voice filled the room.

“Security Alert. Unauthorized command access detected.””

Reed looked at the screen.

His expression changed.

“Colonel Reed: No.””

Nia looked at him.

“Lt. Carter: What?””

He stared at the command signature.

A name appeared.

The person controlling the base security.

The person who had just taken control of every system.

The name made Cole step back.

“Cole: That’s impossible.””

Nia looked at the screen.

A message appeared.

Not from Voss.

Not from Reed.

From someone else.

*RAVEN SEVEN, IF YOU WANT THE TRUTH ABOUT YOUR FATHER, COME ALONE.*

Then another line appeared.

*BRING THE MAN WHO LIED TO YOU.*

A photograph loaded.

A location.

A person waiting there.

Nia stared.

Because the person in the photograph was someone she thought she would never see again.

Her father.

May you like

And beneath the image were four words:

*DANIEL CARTER IS ALIVE.*
