Chapter 4: The Message From a Ghost

The room became completely silent.

Not the kind of silence that came from discipline.

The kind that came when people were afraid to interrupt something they knew they would never forget.

Nia stood frozen in front of the screen.

A dozen thoughts fought through her mind at once.

The voice.

The words.

The impossible reality.

Her father was alive three months ago.

He had recorded a message.

A message meant for her.

She wanted to move.

She wanted to speak.

But her body refused.

For twelve years, she had imagined hearing his voice again.

She had imagined a thousand different situations.

A phone call.

A reunion.

A miracle.

Never this.

Never inside a military briefing room with armed soldiers nearby and a classified operation threatening to destroy everything she thought she knew.

The video continued.

The screen remained black.

Then a man spoke.

“Daniel Carter: Nia…”

The voice was older than she remembered.

Deeper.

Tired.

But unmistakably him.

Nia covered her mouth.

Cole looked away.

Even Reed lowered his eyes.

“Daniel Carter: If you’re seeing this, it means they found Raven Seven.””

A pause.

The sound of distant wind came through the recording.

“Daniel Carter: And it means I failed to keep you away from this.””

Nia’s eyes filled with anger.

Not sadness.

Not yet.

Anger.

Because even now, even after disappearing, her father sounded like he was protecting her.

Like she was still a child he needed to hide from danger.

The video finally showed an image.

A man sitting in a dim room.

Daniel Carter.

Older.

Gray beginning to show in his hair.

A scar near his eyebrow that Nia had never seen before.

But alive.

He looked directly into the camera.

Almost as if he was looking directly at her.

“Daniel Carter: Nia, if you’re watching this, there are things you need to know.””

He leaned closer.

“Daniel Carter: First, I’m sorry.””

Nia looked away.

The apology hurt more than she expected.

“Daniel Carter: I know you probably hate me right now.””

Her jaw tightened.

Because he was right.

And because she didn’t want him to be.

“Daniel Carter: You have every reason to.””

The room stayed silent.

“Daniel Carter: But I need you to understand something. I never left because I wanted to.””

The image flickered slightly.

“Daniel Carter: I left because someone inside our own system was trying to erase everyone connected to Nightfall.””

Reed’s expression changed.

Nia noticed.

“Daniel Carter: They weren’t hunting soldiers. They weren’t hunting evidence.””

A pause.

“They were hunting witnesses.””

Daniel looked directly into the camera.

“And you were the last one.””

Nia felt a chill.

“Lt. Carter: Me?””

Her voice came out quietly.

Everyone looked at her.

The video continued.

“Daniel Carter: You were too young to remember this, but before Nightfall, I discovered something about my mission that changed everything.””

The screen shifted.

A folder appeared.

Old documents.

Photographs.

Names blacked out.

“Daniel Carter: Raven Seven was never just a call sign.””

A pause.

“Daniel Carter: It was a contingency.””

Reed stepped closer.

“Colonel Reed: Stop the video.””

Nobody moved.

Nia turned.

“Lt. Carter: Why?””

Reed’s face was serious.

“Colonel Reed: Because there are things on that recording you are not ready to hear.””

Nia stared at him.

Then at the screen.

“Lt. Carter: You don’t get to decide that anymore.””

The words hit hard.

Even Reed knew she was right.

The video continued.

“Daniel Carter: If Colonel Reed is with you, listen carefully.””

Reed froze.

“Daniel Carter: Marcus…”

The use of his first name changed the room.

Nobody called Colonel Reed that.

Nobody.

“Daniel Carter: If you kept your promise, she’s safe.””

Reed closed his eyes.

For a second, Nia saw something she never expected from him.

Pain.

“Daniel Carter: If you broke it…”

The video paused.

Static filled the room.

Then Daniel’s voice returned.

“…then she’s already in danger.””

The screen flickered.

The recording ended.

Everyone stood motionless.

Then Nia turned toward Reed.

“Lt. Carter: What promise?””

Reed didn’t answer.

Her voice became sharper.

“Lt. Carter: What promise did you make my father?””

Reed looked at Cole.

Cole shook his head.

“Cole: She deserves the truth.””

Reed remained silent.

Nia stepped closer.

“Lt. Carter: Tell me.””

Finally, Reed spoke.

“Colonel Reed: Your father asked me to erase your connection to Nightfall.””

Nia stared.

“Lt. Carter: What?””

“Colonel Reed: He knew if anyone discovered who you were, you would become a target.””

She shook her head.

“Lt. Carter: So you hid me?””

“Yes.””

“Lt. Carter: You changed my records?””

“Yes.””

“Lt. Carter: You made sure I never knew my own father was alive?””

Reed looked down.

“Yes.””

The anger she had been holding exploded.

“Lt. Carter: You stole twelve years from me.””

Nobody spoke.

“Lt. Carter: You let me believe he abandoned us.””

Reed absorbed every word.

“Colonel Reed: I know.””

“Lt. Carter: My mother died believing he was gone.””

That stopped him.

Reed looked up.

“Colonel Reed: Your mother…”

Nia’s expression changed.

“She never recovered.””

The room became heavier.

Reed had protected a secret.

But secrets had consequences.

And sometimes the people protecting them caused the same damage as the people hiding them.

Cole quietly spoke.

“Cole: Lieutenant…”

Nia turned.

“Lt. Carter: Don’t.””

He stopped.

She looked at him.

“Lt. Carter: You all knew.””

Cole didn’t deny it.

“I knew pieces.””

“Lt. Carter: Enough to lie to me.””

Cole looked away.

“Yes.””

Nia laughed once.

A cold, empty sound.

“Lt. Carter: Amazing.””

She grabbed the memory device from the table.

“You all protected my father’s mission.””

She looked at Reed.

“You protected his secret.””

Then at Cole.

“You protected his orders.””

Her voice lowered.

“But nobody protected me.””

Nobody had an answer.

Because she was right.

Later that night, Nia stood alone inside the barracks room assigned to her.

The base had gone quiet.

But sleep was impossible.

She sat on the edge of the bed, holding the photograph of her father.

The recent one.

The one proving everything she had believed was wrong.

A small part of her wanted to destroy it.

Another part wanted to hold it forever.

Her phone buzzed.

Unknown number.

She stared at the screen.

Then answered.

“Lt. Carter: Hello?””

No response.

Only breathing.

Then a voice.

A woman’s voice.

“Unknown Woman: You should not trust Colonel Reed.””

Nia stood immediately.

“Lt. Carter: Who is this?””

The woman ignored the question.

“Unknown Woman: He told you your father was protecting you.””

A pause.

“He wasn’t.””

Nia tightened her grip on the phone.

“Lt. Carter: Who are you?””

“Unknown Woman: Someone who knew Daniel Carter before you did.””

The line crackled.

“Unknown Woman: Someone who knows why he disappeared.””

Nia looked toward the locked door.

“Lt. Carter: Where is my father?””

Silence.

Then:

“Unknown Woman: You’re asking the wrong question.””

Nia frowned.

“Lt. Carter: What does that mean?””

The woman whispered.

“Unknown Woman: You should be asking who your father was running from.””

The call ended.

Immediately, Nia’s door opened.

She turned.

Cole stood there.

His face was tense.

“Cole: Who called you?””

Nia stared.

“Lt. Carter: Why?””

Cole stepped inside.

“Cole: Because five minutes ago, every security system on this base detected an unauthorized signal.””

He looked at the phone in her hand.

“Cole: The signal came from inside your room.””

Nia looked around.

“Lt. Carter: That’s impossible.””

Cole’s eyes moved toward the window.

Then he walked closer.

Slowly.

He pointed.

A small black device was attached beneath the window frame.

Nia stared.

Someone had been listening.

Someone had been watching.

Cole removed it carefully.

Then his expression changed.

Because underneath the device was a symbol.

The same symbol from Nightfall.

The same symbol from his uniform.

Nia looked at him.

“Lt. Carter: Sergeant…”

Cole didn’t answer.

He looked terrified.

“Cole: They’re not trying to find your father.””

A pause.

“They already know where he is.””

Nia’s heartbeat quickened.

“Lt. Carter: Then what are they after?””

Cole looked at her.

And the answer made her blood run cold.

“Cole: They’re trying to find the person your father trusted enough to hide the truth with.””

Nia stared.

“Lt. Carter: Who?””

Cole slowly handed her the device.

On its surface, a name had been engraved.

A name she had never heard before.

A name that made Cole look like he already knew the next chapter of the nightmare.
