Chapter 7: The Truth Hidden in Her Blood

The emergency lights returned one by one.

The bunker was no longer dark, but nobody felt safer.

Nia stood perfectly still.

Her father’s voice still echoed in her mind.

*Don’t believe them.*

Not Reed.

Not the person pretending to be Cole.

Not anyone.

For twelve years, she had searched for the truth about her father.

Now that truth was standing in front of her.

And somehow, it created even more questions.

She looked at Colonel Reed.

“Lt. Carter: What am I?””

Reed didn’t answer.

That was the worst possible response.

Because silence had become the language of every secret she had uncovered.

“Lt. Carter: I asked you a question.””

Reed looked exhausted.

“Colonel Reed: I don’t know if I can explain this in a way that makes sense.””

Nia stepped closer.

“Lt. Carter: Try.””

Cole moved beside her.

“Cole: Sir, she deserves to know.””

Reed looked at both of them.

Then he slowly opened the original Nightfall file.

Inside was a document separated from the others.

Unlike the mission reports, this page had no military markings.

No signatures.

No official classification.

Only one title.

*PROJECT RAVEN.*

Nia stared.

“Lt. Carter: Project Raven?””

Reed nodded.

“Colonel Reed: That was the beginning.””

He placed the document on the table.

“Colonel Reed: Before Nightfall, before your father disappeared, there was a classified research program.””

Nia looked through the pages.

The language was technical.

Medical.

Scientific.

But one sentence stood out.

*Subject demonstrates exceptional cognitive adaptation under extreme conditions.*

She looked up.

“Lt. Carter: Subject?””

Reed didn’t answer immediately.

Cole did.

“Cole: You.””

Nia closed the file.

“No.””

Cole looked at her.

“Cole: Lieutenant—”

“No.””

Her voice became firmer.

“Lt. Carter: I am not a project.””

Nobody spoke.

She pushed the file away.

“I’m not a number. I’m not an experiment.””

Reed nodded.

“Colonel Reed: You’re right.””

That surprised her.

He continued.

“Colonel Reed: Your father believed the same thing.””

Nia looked at him.

“Lt. Carter: Then explain.””

Reed took a breath.

“Colonel Reed: Project Raven wasn’t created to make soldiers.””

“Then what?””

“Colonel Reed: To understand survival.””

He pointed to the documents.

“Colonel Reed: Researchers discovered that certain individuals had unusual responses to extreme stress. Their brains processed threats differently. Their bodies adapted faster.””

Nia frowned.

“Lt. Carter: That sounds like something military leaders would want to weaponize.””

Reed looked at her.

“Colonel Reed: Exactly.””

The word settled heavily.

“Colonel Reed: Your father discovered they were no longer studying human ability.””

A pause.

“Colonel Reed: They were trying to manufacture it.””

Nia looked down.

“Lt. Carter: And I was part of it.””

Reed shook his head.

“No.””

He tapped the page.

“Colonel Reed: You were born before the program changed.””

She looked confused.

“Lt. Carter: What does that mean?””

Reed sat down.

“Colonel Reed: Your parents were part of an early medical study. They believed they were contributing to research that would help soldiers recover from trauma.””

Nia’s breathing slowed.

“Lt. Carter: My parents knew?””

“Your father knew later.””

“And my mother?””

Reed looked away.

“Colonel Reed: Your mother was never told the full truth.””

Nia absorbed that.

A lifetime of missing pieces.

A lifetime of unanswered questions.

All connected.

“Lt. Carter: So my father found out.””

“Yes.””

“And he took me away from it.””

“Yes.””

“Lt. Carter: Then why did they come after him?””

Reed’s expression darkened.

“Colonel Reed: Because Daniel didn’t just discover Project Raven.””

He looked at her.

“He destroyed it.””

The bunker door suddenly unlocked.

Everyone turned.

A soldier entered quickly.

“Soldier: Colonel, we found the source of the signal.””

Reed stood.

“Colonel Reed: Where?””

The soldier looked at Nia.

“Soldier: It came from inside the base.””

Cole immediately reached for his weapon.

“Cole: Someone is still here.””

The soldier nodded.

“Soldier: Yes, sir.””

Nia noticed something.

The soldier’s eyes.

They weren’t looking at Reed.

They were looking at her.

Not with suspicion.

With recognition.

“Lt. Carter: Do I know you?””

The soldier froze.

A mistake.

A small one.

But Nia noticed.

Reed noticed too.

“Colonel Reed: Remove your helmet.””

The soldier didn’t move.

The room became tense.

Cole stepped forward.

“Cole: That’s an order.””

Slowly, the soldier reached up.

Removed the helmet.

And everyone went silent.

Because the face underneath wasn’t unfamiliar.

It was a face from an old photograph.

A photograph inside the Nightfall file.

A soldier who was supposed to have died twelve years ago.

Reed whispered.

“Colonel Reed: No…”

The man looked at him.

“Unknown Soldier: You always were slow to accept reality, Marcus.””

Nia stared.

“Lt. Carter: Who are you?””

The man looked at her.

Then smiled slightly.

“Unknown Soldier: Someone your father trusted.””

A pause.

“Unknown Soldier: Before he learned what I really was.””

Cole raised his weapon.

“Cole: Identify yourself.””

The man ignored him.

His eyes stayed on Nia.

“Unknown Soldier: Daniel told me you would look exactly like your mother.””

Nia felt her heart race.

“Lt. Carter: You knew my father.””

The man nodded.

“Unknown Soldier: Better than anyone.””

Reed stepped forward.

“Colonel Reed: You were dead.””

The man smiled.

“So was Daniel.””

The words hit the room.

Nia felt something was wrong.

Not because of what he said.

Because of how Reed reacted.

Reed wasn’t surprised.

He was afraid.

“Lt. Carter: Who are you?””

The man finally answered.

“Commander Elias Voss.””

Cole immediately stiffened.

“Cole: Impossible.””

Nia looked at him.

“Lt. Carter: You know that name.””

Cole nodded slowly.

“Cole: He was the leader of the Nightfall intelligence team.””

Voss smiled.

“Commander Voss: And the only one who knew the entire truth.””

Nia looked between him and Reed.

“Lt. Carter: Then why are you here?””

Voss stepped closer.

“Commander Voss: Because Daniel Carter made a mistake.””

Nia’s eyes narrowed.

“Lt. Carter: What mistake?””

Voss looked at her.

“He thought hiding you would keep you safe.””

A pause.

“He was wrong.””

The lights flickered.

Again.

Voss continued.

“Commander Voss: Because the people hunting you don’t want to kill Raven Seven.””

Nia stared.

“Lt. Carter: Then what do they want?””

Voss smiled.

And somehow that was worse than anger.

“Commander Voss: They want to activate her.””

A cold silence filled the bunker.

Reed moved between them.

“Colonel Reed: Don’t listen to him.””

Voss laughed quietly.

“Commander Voss: Still protecting her.””

He looked at Nia.

“Commander Voss: Ask him why your father erased your childhood memories.””

Nia turned.

Slowly.

“Lt. Carter: What?””

Reed froze.

Cole looked at him.

“Cole: Sir?””

Nia’s voice dropped.

“Lt. Carter: What did he mean?””

Reed didn’t answer.

That was enough.

She stepped back.

“No.””

Reed finally spoke.

“Colonel Reed: Nia—”

“No.””

She shook her head.

“Lt. Carter: Not another secret.””

The bunker felt smaller.

Voss watched silently.

Enjoying the damage.

Nia looked at Reed.

“Lt. Carter: Did my father erase my memories?””

Reed closed his eyes.

Then nodded.

Only once.

But it was enough.

Her entire world shifted.

“Lt. Carter: Why?””

Reed opened his eyes.

And the answer was the last thing she expected.

“Colonel Reed: Because when you were eight years old…”

A pause.

“Colonel Reed: You saw who killed the Nightfall team.””

Nia stopped breathing.

“Lt. Carter: I saw them?””

“Yes.””

“Lt. Carter: Who?””

Nobody answered.

Then Voss spoke.

“Commander Voss: You already know.””

Nia turned toward him.

He looked directly into her eyes.

“Commander Voss: You just don’t remember.””

The room went silent.

Then every screen in the bunker activated.

A childhood video appeared.

A little girl.

Eight years old.

Standing beside a helicopter.

Standing beside Daniel Carter.

And behind them…

A man in uniform.

The face slowly came into focus.

Nia stared.

Because she knew that face.

Everyone in the room knew it.

The video froze.

The identity appeared beneath it.

*MARCUS REED.*

Nia looked at the colonel.

Her voice barely existed.

“Lt. Carter: You were there.””

Reed said nothing.

And for the first time…

May you like

Nia wondered if her father had been protecting her from the enemy.

Or from the truth about the man who had raised her from the shadows.
