Chapter 12: The Truth Behind The Disappearance

Marcus didn’t open the envelope.

Not immediately.

He stood there holding it, feeling the weight of everything everyone had hidden from him.

His wife.

His sister-in-law.

His brother.

Everyone.

Everyone except him.

Maya watched his face.

She knew something was wrong.

Not because someone told her.

Because she knew her father.

And Marcus looked like a man fighting a battle inside his own mind.

“Dad.””

He looked at her.

“Yeah?””

“Are you scared of what’s inside?””

Marcus looked down.

“Yes.””

Maya nodded slowly.

“Me too.””

The honesty of her answer broke something in him.

He knelt beside her.

“I’m sorry.””

“For what?””

“For letting adults keep secrets that hurt you.””

Maya looked at the sweater.

“I just wanted to know my mom.””

Marcus touched the fabric.

“You will.””

Then he looked at the envelope.

“And we’re going to find out everything.””

Daniel watched them.

Something like regret crossed his face.

Marcus noticed.

“You knew.””

Daniel looked away.

“You knew how much she loved Maya.””

“Yes.””

“You knew how much she loved me.””

Daniel didn’t answer.

Marcus stepped closer.

“Then why didn’t you help us?””

Daniel swallowed.

“Because I thought I was helping.””

Marcus shook his head.

“Everyone says that.””

Daniel nodded.

“Because everyone was wrong.””

He looked at the envelope.

“Your wife discovered something.””

“What?””

Daniel looked at Vanessa.

Then Elijah.

Then Marcus.

“She discovered that the person controlling everything wasn’t outside the family.””

Maya whispered:

“It was someone inside.””

Daniel nodded.

“Yes.””

Marcus looked around.

“Who?””

Daniel didn’t answer.

Instead, he said:

“Open the envelope.””

Marcus tore it open.

Inside was a single photograph.

Not old.

Recent.

His wife standing outside a building.

Alive.

Older.

Different.

But unmistakably her.

Marcus stopped breathing.

Maya gasped.

“That’s Mom.””

Marcus touched the image.

His hand shook.

Behind the photograph was a date.

A date from only six months ago.

Six months.

Not years.

Not before she disappeared.

Six months ago.

Marcus looked at Daniel.

“She was alive.””

Daniel nodded.

“Yes.””

A thousand emotions crossed Marcus’s face.

Anger.

Relief.

Pain.

Hope.

“Where is she?””

Daniel looked away.

“I don’t know.””

Marcus grabbed his arm.

“You know something.””

Daniel didn’t resist.

“She contacted me once.””

“When?””

“Three months ago.””

Marcus’s grip tightened.

“And you didn’t tell me?””

Daniel looked at him.

“She told me not to.””

Marcus froze.

“Why?””

Daniel looked toward Maya.

“Because she was still afraid.””

Maya whispered:

“Of my dad?””

Daniel hesitated.

“No.””

Everyone waited.

Daniel looked at Marcus.

“She was afraid of what would happen if the wrong person knew she was alive.””

Vanessa suddenly spoke.

“The person who called.””

Daniel nodded.

“Yes.””

Marcus looked at the phone.

“So who are they?””

Daniel’s expression changed.

And for the first time, Marcus saw real fear.

“Someone who has been closer to your family than any of us realized.””

The lights flickered again.

Everyone looked around.

Then the front door slowly opened.

Nobody touched it.

Nobody stood near it.

A figure appeared outside.

Marcus moved in front of Maya.

The person stepped into the light.

And Marcus’s heart stopped.

Because the person standing there was someone he had buried years ago.

Someone who should not have been alive.

Someone who knew the truth.

Someone who whispered:

“Marcus…”

A familiar voice.

May you like

His wife’s voice.

“Maya is in danger because of you.””
