Chapter 5: The Secret Nobody Buried

Marcus didn’t remember walking to the kitchen.

One moment he was standing beside Maya.

The next, he was gripping the counter, trying to understand a world that had changed in less than an hour.

His wife was gone.

For years, he had believed he knew why.

He had believed the doctors.

He had believed the records.

He had believed everyone who told him there was nothing left to find.

Now a stranger was standing in his home telling him everything he believed was incomplete.

Or worse.

A lie.

Maya sat quietly at the table.

The birthday decorations surrounded her.

Balloons.

Cake.

Gifts.

Everything looked normal.

That was the cruelest part.

A normal room holding an impossible truth.

Elijah sat across from Marcus.

Vanessa remained standing.

She looked like she wanted to leave.

But she also looked like she knew she couldn’t.

Marcus finally spoke.

“You said my wife left.””

Elijah nodded.

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Elijah looked down.

“Because she thought staying would put Maya in danger.””

Marcus’s jaw tightened.

“She had a daughter.””

“I know.””

“She had me.””

“I know.””

“Then why didn’t she trust us?””

Elijah looked at him.

“She did.””

That answer made Marcus angry.

“No, she didn’t.””

“She trusted you to protect Maya.””

Marcus looked toward his daughter.

“And she thought leaving was protecting her?””

“Yes.””

Maya’s voice was small.

“Did she leave because of me?””

Everyone turned.

Marcus immediately stood.

“No.””

But Maya shook her head.

“Everyone keeps saying she was protecting me.””

She looked at the sweater.

“From what?””

Nobody answered.

Maya’s eyes filled.

“I deserve to know.””

The room went quiet.

Because she was right.

Marcus walked over and knelt beside her.

“Your mother loved you.””

“Then why did she disappear?””

Marcus had no answer.

That hurt more than anything.

He touched the sweater sleeve.

“She gave you this.””

Maya nodded.

“She said it was special.””

Marcus looked at the hidden pocket.

“She knew someday you would find it.””

Elijah nodded.

“She planned everything carefully.””

Vanessa suddenly spoke.

“She was always like that.””

Everyone looked at her.

Vanessa sat down slowly.

Her confidence was gone.

“She thought ten steps ahead.””

Marcus stared.

“You really knew her.””

Vanessa looked at the photograph.

“Yes.””

“Why pretend you didn’t?””

Vanessa’s eyes moved to Maya.

“Because she asked me to.””

Nobody expected that.

Marcus frowned.

“She asked you?””

Vanessa nodded.

“She made me promise.””

“Why?””

Vanessa’s voice became quieter.

“Because she knew if you found out the truth too soon, you would go looking for her.””

Marcus stared.

“And?””

“And whoever was watching her would know where she went.””

A chill moved through the room.

Maya whispered:

“Someone was watching my mom?””

Vanessa looked at her.

“Yes.””

“Who?””

Vanessa looked at Elijah.

Then away.

“I don’t know.””

Marcus immediately noticed.

“You’re lying.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“I know who was looking.””

“Who?””

She didn’t answer.

Marcus slammed his hand onto the table.

“Enough.””

Everyone jumped.

“You don’t get to protect secrets anymore.””

Vanessa looked at him.

“You think knowing everything will fix this?””

“No.””

Marcus pointed at Maya.

“But she deserves her own story.””

Vanessa looked at Maya.

The anger in her face disappeared.

Something else replaced it.

Regret.

“I was jealous of your mother.””

Maya blinked.

“What?””

Vanessa looked down.

“I spent my whole life watching her get everything I wanted.””

Marcus said nothing.

“She had a family. She had love. She had someone who would fight for her.””

She looked at Marcus.

“I hated that.””

Maya listened quietly.

“But that’s not why I lied.””

“Then why?””

Vanessa closed her eyes.

“Because the last time I saw your mother, she gave me something.””

Marcus leaned forward.

“What?””

Vanessa looked toward her purse.

Slowly, she reached inside.

She pulled out a small key.

Old.

Metal.

Worn.

Maya stared.

“What is that?””

Vanessa held it tightly.

“Something I promised never to show anyone.””

Marcus looked at the key.

“Where does it go?””

Vanessa didn’t answer.

Because before she could—

Her phone rang again.

This time, everyone heard the sound.

She looked at the screen.

And froze.

Marcus saw the fear return.

“Who is it?””

Vanessa slowly turned the phone around.

The name on the screen made Marcus’s blood run cold.

May you like

Because it was a name he recognized.

A name connected to the day his wife disappeared.
