Chapter 8: The Man Nobody Suspected
Marcus stared at the notebook.
His own name stared back at him.
Written dozens of times.
Different dates.
Different pages.
Different handwriting pressure.
Some written carefully.
Some written so hard the pen had almost torn through the paper.
Maya saw his expression.
“Dad?””
Marcus closed the notebook.
Too quickly.
Everyone noticed.
“What is it?”” Elijah asked.
Marcus looked at him.
“Why is my name in here?””
Nobody answered.
That was becoming the pattern.
Everyone had pieces.
Nobody had the whole picture.
Vanessa slowly approached the table.
“Let me see it.””
Marcus pulled it away.
“No.””
“Marcus.””
“No.””
His voice was firm.
“You don’t get to hide behind secrets anymore.””
Vanessa stopped.
For once, she didn’t argue.
Marcus opened the notebook again.
The first page was filled with small notes.
Not random thoughts.
Observations.
Things his wife had noticed.
Things she had been afraid of.
“She was watching me.””
The words escaped him.
Maya looked confused.
“Why would Mom watch you?””
Marcus shook his head.
“I don’t know.””
Elijah looked uncomfortable.
“That’s not what she was doing.””
“Then what?””
Elijah pointed to the page.
“She was trying to protect you.””
Marcus looked again.
The notes were not accusations.
They were reminders.
Marcus leaves for work at 6:40.
Marcus takes the same route every morning.
Marcus doesn’t notice the car behind him.
Marcus trusts people too easily.
His heart dropped.
“She was watching because she thought someone was watching me.””
Elijah nodded.
“Yes.””
Vanessa sat down.
“She found out something before she disappeared.””
Marcus looked at her.
“What?””
Vanessa hesitated.
Then finally said:
“She found out someone close to you was involved.””
The room changed.
Marcus looked around.
At family members.
At guests.
At everyone who had known him.
“Who?””
Vanessa looked away.
“She never told me.””
“But you knew she was afraid.””
“Yes.””
“And you let me believe she left?””
Vanessa’s eyes filled.
“I thought I was protecting Maya.””
Marcus shook his head.
“You keep using that word.””
“Because it’s true.””
“No.””
His voice cracked.
“You were protecting yourself.””
Vanessa didn’t deny it.
Maya looked at her.
“Did you love my mom?””
The question surprised Vanessa.
She looked at the little girl.
“Yes.””
“Then why did you hurt her?””
Vanessa looked down.
“Because sometimes people hurt the ones they love when they’re afraid.””
Maya’s eyes filled.
“That doesn’t make sense.””
“No.””
Vanessa nodded.
“It doesn’t.””
A phone buzzed.
Everyone turned.
This time it was Marcus’s phone.
He looked at the screen.
Unknown number.
His stomach tightened.
He answered.
“Hello?””
Silence.
Then a voice.
A woman’s voice.
A voice he hadn’t heard in years.
Marcus stopped breathing.
“Maya?””
The room froze.
Because the voice said her name.
Not Marcus’s.
Maya’s.
Marcus gripped the phone.
“Who is this?””
The woman didn’t answer immediately.
Then:
“Is she wearing the sweater?””
Marcus looked at Maya.
She touched the sleeve.
Slowly, Marcus stood.
“Who are you?””
A pause.
Then the voice whispered:
“I’m the person who helped your wife disappear.””
Marcus’s face went pale.
Vanessa covered her mouth.
Elijah stepped back.
Maya stared at the phone.
The woman continued.
“And if you opened the letter…”
The connection crackled.
Marcus moved closer.
“If what?””
The voice became quieter.
May you like
“You’re already too late.””
The call ended.
