Chapter 9: The Door That Should Stay Closed

Marcus stood frozen.

The phone remained pressed against his ear long after the call ended.

Nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

Maya watched her father.

She had seen him angry.

She had seen him tired.

She had seen him sad.

But she had never seen him scared.

“Dad?””

Marcus lowered the phone.

The room felt smaller.

“She knew.””

Elijah looked at him.

“Who?””

Marcus looked at Maya.

“The person who called.””

Vanessa stood.

“What did they say?””

Marcus looked at her.

“They knew about the sweater.””

Vanessa’s face changed.

“No.””

“They knew about the letter.””

Elijah immediately grabbed his jacket.

“We need to go.””

Marcus looked at him.

“Where?””

“Somewhere safe.””

Marcus laughed quietly.

“Safe?””

He looked around the house.

The house where he raised Maya.

The house where he thought his family was protected.

“Apparently nowhere is safe.””

Maya walked toward him.

“Dad.””

He looked down.

“Are you scared?””

Marcus wanted to say no.

He wanted to be the strong father.

The one who always had answers.

But lying was what created this entire mess.

“Yes.””

Maya looked surprised.

Marcus knelt.

“I’m scared because I don’t know what happened to your mother.””

He touched her shoulder.

“But I promise you one thing.””

“What?””

“I won’t let anyone take the truth away from you again.””

Maya nodded.

A small, brave nod.

Then Vanessa spoke.

“There’s something you need to know.””

Marcus stood.

“What?””

Vanessa looked at the key she had been holding.

“The key I showed you.””

Marcus looked at it.

“Where does it go?””

Vanessa hesitated.

“Your wife’s old apartment.””

Marcus frowned.

“My wife didn’t have an apartment.””

Vanessa looked at him.

“Yes, she did.””

The words hit him.

“What?””

“She kept it secret.””

“From me?””

Vanessa nodded.

“From everyone.””

Marcus stared.

“Why?””

Vanessa looked at Maya.

“Because she stored everything there.””

Elijah’s expression changed.

“The documents.””

Vanessa nodded.

“The proof.””

Marcus looked between them.

“What proof?””

Vanessa whispered:

“Proof of who was after her.””

Maya stepped closer.

“And you know where it is?””

Vanessa nodded.

“Yes.””

“Then why didn’t you get it?””

Vanessa looked away.

“Because someone was waiting.””

The room went silent.

Marcus picked up the photograph.

The old image.

The old secret.

The beginning of everything.

“Take us there.””

Vanessa looked shocked.

“No.””

“Yes.””

“You don’t understand what you’re walking into.””

Marcus looked at Maya.

Then back at Vanessa.

“I’ve spent years standing outside a locked door.””

He held up the key.

“Now I have the key.””

Elijah stepped forward.

“I’m coming too.””

Marcus looked at him.

“Why?””

Elijah looked at Maya.

“Because your mother trusted me.””

A long silence followed.

Then Maya reached for her sweater.

The same old sweater everyone had laughed at.

The same sweater that carried a secret.

She looked at Vanessa.

“Was my mom afraid?””

Vanessa looked at her.

“Yes.””

“Was she alone?””

Vanessa’s eyes filled.

“No.””

Maya waited.

Vanessa whispered:

“She had someone helping her.””

Marcus froze.

“Who?””

Vanessa looked toward the front door.

Then she said:

“Someone inside this family.””

Before anyone could respond, the lights in the house suddenly flickered.

Once.

Twice.

Then went out.

The birthday candles were the only light left.

A phone vibrated on the table.

Not Marcus’s.

Not Vanessa’s.

Maya looked down.

Her eyes widened.

Because the phone wasn’t there before.

A small old phone.

Placed beside the photograph.

And on the screen was one new message.

May you like

From her mother.

*I’m sorry I left you. But I had to save you from your father.*
