Chapter 13: The Woman Who Came Back
Nobody moved.
Nobody spoke.
The woman standing in the doorway looked exactly like a memory.
A ghost.
A person Marcus had spent years trying to accept he would never see again.
Her hair was longer.
Her face was older.
There were new lines around her eyes.
But it was her.
Maya’s mother.
Marcus forgot how to breathe.
“Maya…”
The woman’s voice cracked.
The moment she said her daughter’s name, everything changed.
Maya stood frozen.
She looked at the woman.
Then at Marcus.
Then back again.
Her entire life had been built around one painful truth.
Her mother was gone.
Now the impossible was standing in front of her.
Alive.
Maya whispered:
“Mom?””
The woman covered her mouth.
Tears filled her eyes.
“Yes.””
That one word destroyed the last wall Maya had been holding up.
She ran.
Marcus almost stopped her.
Almost.
But he didn’t.
Maya crossed the room and threw herself into her mother’s arms.
Her mother held her tightly.
Like she had been waiting years for that exact moment.
“I’m sorry,” she whispered.
Maya cried into her shoulder.
“Why did you leave me?””
The question was small.
But it carried years of pain.
Her mother closed her eyes.
“Because I thought leaving was the only way to keep you alive.””
Marcus stood there.
Watching the reunion he had dreamed about.
But something still hurt.
Because the woman he loved had returned carrying the same accusation.
Maya is in danger because of you.
Marcus finally spoke.
“Why?””
Everyone looked at him.
His wife slowly released Maya.
The room felt different now.
No more hiding.
No more pretending.
She looked at Marcus.
And he saw something he never wanted to see.
Fear.
Not fear of him.
Fear for him.
“Because I made a mistake.””
Marcus shook his head.
“You disappeared for years.””
“I know.””
“You let me believe you were dead.””
“I know.””
“You let Maya grow up without you.””
Her eyes filled.
“I know.””
The pain in her voice stopped him.
Because she wasn’t defending herself.
She was accepting every wound.
“I wanted to come back.””
Marcus looked away.
“Then why didn’t you?””
She glanced at Daniel.
Then Vanessa.
Then Elijah.
“Because the person who threatened us was never going to stop.””
Marcus’s expression hardened.
“Who?””
She looked at him.
“That’s the problem.””
“What?””
She stepped closer.
“I never knew if you were safe.””
Marcus flinched.
“After all these years, you still think I could hurt you?””
“No.””
Her answer came instantly.
“I think someone could use you.””
Silence.
Marcus looked confused.
“What does that mean?””
She looked at the photograph.
The sweater.
The letter.
“The person behind this knew exactly how to break us apart.””
Maya held her mother’s hand.
“Who was it?””
Her mother looked at her.
And for the first time, Marcus saw hesitation.
Not because she didn’t know.
Because she was afraid of saying it.
“It was someone who knew our family.””
Daniel stepped forward.
“Tell them.””
She looked at him.
“You knew?””
Daniel nodded.
“I should have told them sooner.””
Marcus stared.
“You knew everything?””
Daniel looked ashamed.
“No.””
He looked at Marcus.
“But I knew enough.””
Marcus laughed bitterly.
“That seems to be everyone’s favorite answer.””
His wife looked at him.
“Marcus.””
“No.””
He shook his head.
“I need to understand.””
She nodded.
“You deserve that.””
She reached into her bag.
She pulled out a small folder.
Inside were documents.
Photos.
Records.
Evidence.
She placed them on the table.
“I found out someone was using my name.””
Marcus frowned.
“Using your name?””
“Yes.””
“For what?””
She looked at Vanessa.
Vanessa lowered her eyes.
Then Marcus understood.
“This involves all of you.””
Nobody denied it.
His wife continued.
“Years ago, I discovered financial records connected to people close to us.””
Marcus looked at Daniel.
Then Vanessa.
“You?””
Daniel looked down.
“Not intentionally.””
Vanessa whispered:
“I made one mistake.””
Marcus stared.
“Everyone keeps saying that.””
His wife touched his arm.
“And everyone means it.””
Marcus looked at her.
“You knew I wasn’t the threat.””
She nodded.
“I knew.””
“Then why write that message?””
Her expression changed.
“What message?””
Marcus grabbed the old phone.
The one with the message.
He showed her.
She read it.
And her face went completely pale.
“I never wrote this.””
Nobody moved.
Marcus felt the ground shift again.
“What?””
She shook her head.
“I never sent this.””
Maya looked confused.
“Then who did?””
Her mother stared at the phone.
And whispered:
“Someone who wanted you to hate your father.””
The room went silent.
Then the phone buzzed again.
A new message appeared.
This time, everyone saw it.
*You finally brought her back. Now finish what you started.*
Marcus looked at the screen.
His wife looked terrified.
May you like
Because beneath the message was a name.
A name that made everyone freeze.
