The Twenty Dollar Secret / Chapter 10 / 15

Chapter 10: The Person Who Knew My Name

The sound outside stopped everyone.

A car door closing.

A single, heavy sound.

But inside the kitchen, it felt louder than an explosion.

My father moved before I even realized what was happening.

He stepped in front of me.

Not dramatically.

Not like a movie hero.

Just instinct.

Like protecting me was something his body knew before his mind did.

“Maya, behind me.””

I listened.

For the first time all day, I didn’t argue.

I moved behind him, clutching the strap of my backpack still hanging from my shoulder.

The backpack suddenly felt strange.

Like it belonged to a different version of me.

The girl who walked through that front door after school expecting a normal evening.

The girl who thought her biggest problem was a missing twenty dollars.

That girl was gone.

Vanessa stared toward the hallway.

Her face was pale.

The man with the folder looked toward the front door.

“You need to get her out of here.””

Marcus looked back.

“Who is outside?””

The man didn’t answer.

That was enough.

My father’s eyes narrowed.

“Who?””

The man swallowed.

“I don’t know.””

“You keep saying that.””

“Because it’s true.””

Marcus looked toward the door.

Then back at him.

“You know more than you’re telling me.””

The man looked down.

“I know enough to know this isn’t safe.””

Vanessa suddenly stepped forward.

“Marcus.””

Everyone looked at her.

She looked different.

Not like the woman who controlled every conversation.

Not like the person who always had the final word.

She looked scared.

“Please.””

My father stared at her.

“Please what?””

“Don’t open that door.””

The sentence hung in the air.

Because Vanessa had never been afraid of anyone before.

Not that I had seen.

Marcus looked at the door.

Then at her.

“You know who it is.””

“No.””

The answer came too quickly.

My father noticed.

“You do.””

She shook her head.

“I know what happens if you open that door.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

“What happens?””

Vanessa looked at me.

And for a second, I saw guilt.

Real guilt.

“Maya…”

My father immediately turned.

“Don’t.””

His voice was quiet.

But firm.

“You don’t get to protect her from the truth anymore.””

Vanessa looked away.

The doorbell rang.

Everyone froze.

Once.

Twice.

The sound echoed through the house.

Marcus walked toward the hallway.

“Maya stays here.””

I grabbed his arm.

“Dad.””

He looked at me.

His face softened.

“I’m not leaving you.””

“I’m scared.””

The words came out before I could stop them.

My father’s expression changed.

Because maybe that was the first time all day I had admitted it.

Not about the money.

Not about Vanessa.

About everything.

“I know.””

He squeezed my hand.

“And I’m sorry you were scared alone.””

Then he walked toward the door.

The man with the folder whispered:

“Marcus, don’t.””

My father stopped.

“Why?””

The man hesitated.

“Because whoever is outside knows exactly what they’re doing.””

The doorbell rang again.

Marcus looked through the small window beside the door.

His expression changed.

“Who is it?””

Nobody answered.

He looked back.

“Who is outside?””

The man lowered his voice.

“It’s him.””

Vanessa closed her eyes.

Marcus turned.

“Him?””

The man nodded.

The front door remained closed.

But the entire room felt like someone had already entered.

My father unlocked the door.

Vanessa gasped.

“Marcus!””

The door opened.

A man stood outside.

Older.

Well-dressed.

Calm.

Too calm.

He looked past Marcus.

Straight at Vanessa.

Then at me.

And when his eyes landed on me, my entire body went cold.

Because he knew exactly who I was.

“Maya.””

My name sounded wrong coming from his mouth.

My father stepped forward.

“How do you know my daughter?””

The man didn’t answer.

He looked at the phone in Marcus’s hand.

Then at the folder on the counter.

Then smiled slightly.

“You found everything faster than I expected.””

My father’s voice hardened.

“Who are you?””

The man ignored the question.

Instead, he looked at Vanessa.

“You were supposed to handle this.””

Vanessa’s face tightened.

“I tried.””

“No.””

The man’s voice was cold.

“You hid it.””

Marcus stared.

“You know her.””

The man looked at him.

“I know all of you.””

The room went silent.

My father moved closer.

“What does that mean?””

The man smiled faintly.

“It means Vanessa wasn’t the only one keeping secrets.””

My heart sank.

I looked at my father.

He looked confused.

Then angry.

“What are you talking about?””

The man reached into his coat.

My father immediately raised his hand.

“Slowly.””

The man stopped.

Then pulled out a small envelope.

He held it toward Marcus.

“You deserve to see this.””

My father didn’t take it.

“What is it?””

The man looked at me.

“A piece of the truth.””

Nobody moved.

May you like

Then he added:

“The truth about why your daughter’s name was used.””
