Chapter 5: The Secret Behind the Silence

The message opened with three words.

My father read them silently.

Then he read them again.

I watched his face fall apart piece by piece.

Not dramatically.

Not like in movies.

Real pain was quieter.

It was the way his shoulders dropped.

The way he stopped blinking.

The way his hand tightened around the phone.

“What does it say?”” I asked.

He didn’t answer.

Vanessa moved closer.

“Marcus.””

He stepped away.

That was the first time I had ever seen him step away from her.

Not physically.

Emotionally.

Like something between them had broken.

“What is this?”” he asked.

Vanessa shook her head.

“It’s not what you think.””

My father let out a small laugh.

But there was no humor in it.

“You keep saying that.””

“Because it’s true.””

“Then tell me what it is.””

She looked at me.

Then at him.

Then away.

That was when I realized something.

She wasn’t trying to convince him anymore.

She was trying to control what happened next.

“Maya,” Vanessa said softly, “you should go upstairs.””

I stared at her.

“No.””

Her expression changed.

“You need to listen to me.””

“No, I don’t.””

The words came out stronger than I expected.

My father looked at me.

And I saw something like pride.

Small.

Quiet.

But there.

Vanessa noticed.

And that made her angry.

“You’re encouraging this?””

Marcus looked at her.

“I’m encouraging my daughter to ask questions.””

“She doesn’t understand.””

“She understands enough.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“You have no idea what you’re doing.””

My father looked at the phone again.

“I think I do.””

He placed it on the counter.

“Tell me why there is an account connected to Maya’s money.””

Vanessa stayed silent.

“Tell me why my daughter received twenty dollars when I sent fifteen hundred.””

Still nothing.

“Tell me why she thought she wasn’t allowed to ask me.””

Her lips parted.

But no answer came.

I watched the woman who always had an explanation suddenly run out of words.

It was strange.

Almost scary.

Because Vanessa had built her whole world on making everyone else doubt themselves.

And now she was the one who looked uncertain.

My father picked up the phone again.

“Maya.””

I looked at him.

“I need you to tell me something.””

“What?””

“Has she ever asked you for your bank information?””

I hesitated.

The memory came back immediately.

A year earlier.

Vanessa sitting on my bed.

Her voice gentle.

Her hand resting on my shoulder.

“I just need access so I can help organize things.””

I had trusted her.

Because why wouldn’t I?

She was family.

“Yes,” I whispered.

My father’s eyes sharpened.

“When?””

“Last year.””

Vanessa interrupted.

“Because she was a child.””

Marcus looked at her.

“She was fourteen.””

“Exactly.””

“She was old enough to know what was happening.””

Vanessa laughed bitterly.

“Really? You think a fourteen-year-old understands finances?””

“No.””

My father looked at me.

“But she understands when someone takes something from her.””

The words hit me harder than I expected.

Because they were true.

I looked down.

For years, I had blamed myself.

I thought I was careless.

I thought I didn’t understand money.

I thought maybe Vanessa was right.

Maybe I was just a kid who didn’t know better.

But now my father was saying something different.

Maybe I knew exactly what happened.

I just didn’t have the power to stop it.

Marcus walked toward the kitchen window.

For a moment, he said nothing.

Then he spoke quietly.

“I trusted you.””

Vanessa’s face softened.

“Marcus.””

“No.””

He turned around.

“I trusted you with my daughter.””

The words filled the room.

Vanessa looked hurt.

But I couldn’t tell if she was hurt because he said them…

Or because he finally meant them.

“I took care of her,” Vanessa said.

My father shook his head.

“Taking care of someone doesn’t mean controlling them.””

The phone vibrated again.

Another notification.

Marcus looked down.

His eyes moved quickly.

Then stopped.

“What now?”” Vanessa whispered.

He didn’t respond.

“Maya.””

I looked at him.

“What?””

He turned the phone around.

This time, I could see it.

A transfer.

A large one.

But the description underneath made my heart drop.

Because it wasn’t labeled for me.

It wasn’t labeled for school.

It wasn’t labeled for anything that helped me.

It had another name attached.

A name that made Vanessa immediately reach for the phone.

“Marcus, don’t.””

He pulled it back.

“Why?””

She froze.

“Because you don’t know the whole story.””

My father stared at her.

“Then tell me.””

She looked at the phone.

Then at me.

And for the first time, I saw something I had never seen before.

Vanessa looked trapped.

A long silence passed.

Then she whispered:

“You were never supposed to find that.””

My father’s face changed.

“What did you say?””

She covered her mouth.

Too late.

The words were already out.

My father slowly lowered the phone.

“Never supposed to find what?””

Vanessa didn’t answer.

May you like

And that was when I realized the money wasn’t the only secret.

It was just the first one.
