Chapter 8: The File Hidden in Plain Sight
Nobody moved after he said it.
The account was never supposed to be discovered.
Those words stayed in the kitchen like smoke.
My father held the folder in his hand.
His fingers tightened around the edges.
“Account.””
He looked at Vanessa.
“Say something.””
She didn’t.
The man in the doorway looked nervous now.
Not because he had been caught.
Because he had said too much.
Marcus noticed.
“You know exactly what this is.””
The man looked away.
“I’m not involved.””
My father gave a quiet laugh.
“You walked into my house carrying documents about my daughter’s money.””
“I came here because Vanessa asked me to.””
Vanessa’s head snapped toward him.
“Stop talking.””
The room went silent.
Marcus slowly turned to her.
“You asked him to come here?””
She didn’t answer.
That was enough.
My father placed the folder on the island.
“Who is he?””
Vanessa crossed her arms.
“That doesn’t matter.””
“It matters.””
“No.””
Her voice sharpened.
“What matters is that you’re making this bigger than it is.””
My father looked at her.
“You keep saying that.””
He opened the folder again.
“What exactly am I supposed to believe?””
Vanessa stepped forward.
“You’re looking at pieces without understanding the whole picture.””
“Then give me the whole picture.””
She hesitated.
Again.
That hesitation was becoming her answer.
I watched my father flip through the papers.
His eyes moved faster.
The more he read, the quieter he became.
I wanted to know what he saw.
But I was also afraid.
Because sometimes not knowing the truth feels safer.
Even when the truth is already hurting you.
“Maya,” my father said.
I looked up.
“Yes?””
“Did you ever sign anything?””
I frowned.
“What?””
“Any papers.””
“No.””
Vanessa’s eyes moved toward me.
Just for a second.
But I saw it.
She was watching my answer.
Why?
I stood up.
“Why are you asking me that?””
My father didn’t respond immediately.
He looked at the papers.
Then at Vanessa.
“Because there are documents here connected to her.””
My heart dropped.
“Connected to me?””
Vanessa finally spoke.
“It’s not what you think.””
I looked at her.
“Then what is it?””
She opened her mouth.
Nothing came out.
The man near the door looked uncomfortable.
Marcus noticed.
“You.””
The man looked up.
“What?””
“You know.””
“I don’t.””
“You do.””
My father stepped closer.
“Tell me what those documents are.””
The man shook his head.
“I can’t.””
“Can’t?””
“I signed confidentiality paperwork.””
My father stared.
“Whose confidentiality?””
The man didn’t answer.
But his eyes moved toward Vanessa.
That was all my father needed.
He closed the folder.
“You used my daughter’s information.””
Vanessa’s expression hardened.
“You don’t know that.””
“Then prove me wrong.””
Silence.
I looked between them.
This wasn’t just about money anymore.
It was about something bigger.
Something that involved my name.
My identity.
My future.
My father picked up his phone again.
He opened the banking app.
The screen showed the transactions.
The transfers.
The missing money.
Then he looked at the documents.
“Maya.””
My voice shook.
“What?””
“Come here.””
I walked toward him slowly.
He turned the papers around.
I read the first page.
I didn’t understand all of it.
But I understood enough.
My name was there.
My birthday.
My information.
And underneath it was a signature.
My eyes widened.
“That’s not my signature.””
Nobody spoke.
Vanessa looked away.
Marcus looked at her.
“Whose is it?””
Her silence was louder than an answer.
My father’s voice dropped.
“Vanessa.””
She looked at him.
“I can explain.””
“No.””
He shook his head.
“You can’t explain this away.””
The man picked up his jacket.
“I need to go.””
Marcus turned.
“No one leaves.””
The man stopped.
“Marcus, listen.””
“No.””
My father’s voice was firm.
“Someone has been using my daughter’s name.””
He looked around the kitchen.
“At this point, everyone is going to listen.””
The man looked terrified.
Vanessa looked defeated.
And I stood there staring at a signature that wasn’t mine.
A signature someone had written for me.
Then my father’s phone buzzed again.
He looked down.
A new message.
His face changed.
“Maya?””
I looked at him.
“What?””
He slowly turned the phone around.
May you like
The message had only one sentence.
*Stop looking, or you’ll lose more than money.*
