Chapter 14: The Last Secret

The phone landed on the marble island.

Nobody picked it up.

Nobody moved.

Because the name Rachel said had changed everything.

I looked at my father.

His face had gone completely still.

“Dad?””

He didn’t answer.

“Dad.””

He looked at me.

And I knew.

Whatever he heard was something he never expected.

“Who was it?””

My father looked at Vanessa.

Then Daniel.

Then back at me.

“Someone I trusted.””

The words felt familiar.

Because that was the entire story.

Trust.

Every secret in that kitchen came from someone trusting the wrong person.

Daniel picked up the phone.

“Rachel?””

Her voice came through.

“Yes?””

Marcus finally spoke.

“Say the name again.””

A pause.

Then Rachel answered.

“It was your lawyer.””

Nobody moved.

My father stared.

“My lawyer?””

“Yes.””

The air left the room.

The man who handled his documents.

The person he trusted with legal matters.

The person who knew his family.

The person who had access.

Daniel looked down.

“That explains the paperwork.””

Marcus looked at him.

“You knew?””

“I suspected.””

“You suspected?””

The anger in my father’s voice returned.

“While my daughter’s identity was being used, you suspected?””

Daniel looked ashamed.

“I didn’t know who was behind it.””

My father shook his head.

“No.””

He pointed toward the folder.

“You knew enough.””

Daniel didn’t argue.

Because he did.

My father walked away from the counter.

For a moment, nobody spoke.

Then Vanessa whispered:

“I never wanted this.””

My father stopped.

“You never wanted what?””

She looked at me.

“This.””

The tears returned.

“Everything falling apart.””

I stared at her.

“Then why did you keep lying?””

She looked down.

“Because every time I thought about telling the truth, I imagined losing you.””

The answer hurt.

Because it sounded like love.

Twisted.

Damaged.

But still love.

And maybe that was why this was so painful.

If Vanessa had never cared, it would have been easier.

If she had been cruel every second, it would have made sense.

But she had also packed my lunches.

Helped me with homework.

Sat beside me when I was sick.

Those memories didn’t disappear.

They just became complicated.

“I loved you,” she whispered.

My voice shook.

“I know.””

She looked surprised.

“But you hurt me.””

Her face collapsed.

“I know.””

For once, she didn’t defend herself.

She didn’t explain.

She just accepted it.

My father picked up his phone.

“I’m calling him.””

Nobody asked who.

We all knew.

His lawyer.

The person who had been hiding behind paperwork.

The person who thought numbers and signatures could erase a person’s truth.

The call connected.

A man answered.

“Marcus?””

My father’s voice was calm.

“Why did you do it?””

Silence.

The kind of silence that confirms everything.

“Marcus, I don’t know what you mean.””

My father looked at the documents.

“Don’t lie to me.””

Another pause.

Then a sigh.

“You found the account.””

My heart dropped.

Not denial.

Recognition.

“You knew.””

The man on the phone didn’t answer.

“You knew.””

“Yes.””

The confession was quiet.

But it destroyed the last piece of hope.

My father gripped the counter.

“Why?””

The man sighed.

“Because your family was already broken.””

My father’s expression changed.

“What?””

“You think this started with Vanessa?””

Everyone froze.

The man continued.

“You think she planned everything?””

Vanessa looked up.

“What are you saying?””

The voice on the phone became colder.

“She wasn’t the beginning.””

My father stepped closer.

“Explain.””

“You hired me because you wanted to protect your daughter.””

“Yes.””

“But you never asked what happened before she came to live with you.””

My father went silent.

I felt my stomach tighten.

Before?

Before what?

The lawyer continued.

“There are things about Maya’s birth you never knew.””

My father looked at me.

My heart started racing.

“No.””

His voice was low.

“Don’t.””

The lawyer ignored him.

“Marcus, Maya is not the only person who was lied to.””

Nobody spoke.

Then the lawyer said:

“The truth is, you were never told the full story about who Maya’s father was.””

May you like

The kitchen went silent.

My father dropped his phone.
