Chapter 12: The Truth About My Mother
Nobody spoke.
Not because there was nothing to say.
Because there was too much.
The kitchen had become a place full of ghosts.
Not the kind you see.
The kind you feel.
Every memory I had suddenly had a question attached to it.
Every birthday.
Every school event.
Every time I asked about my mother and Vanessa changed the subject.
Every time Dad said, “It’s complicated.””
I thought complicated meant painful.
I never imagined it meant hidden.
My father looked at Vanessa.
His face was different now.
The anger was still there.
But something deeper had replaced it.
Betrayal.
“You told me she didn’t want contact.””
Vanessa’s lips trembled.
“Marcus…”
“Answer me.””
She looked down.
“I didn’t know what else to do.””
The words were quiet.
But they destroyed the room.
My father stared.
“What does that mean?””
Vanessa wiped her eyes.
“She was unstable.””
Daniel shook his head.
“That isn’t true.””
Vanessa looked at him.
“You don’t know everything.””
“I know she tried.””
My father turned.
“Who is she?””
Daniel looked at him.
“Her name is Rachel.””
My heart moved strangely hearing it.
Rachel.
A name.
A real name.
Not just “your mother.””
My father whispered:
“Where is she?””
Nobody answered.
That silence hurt.
“Where is she?””
Daniel looked down.
“She’s been trying to find Maya.””
My hands went cold.
“Trying?””
I looked at him.
“Why would she need to find me?””
Nobody answered.
I already knew.
Because someone had hidden me.
My father looked at Vanessa.
“You told Rachel that Maya didn’t want to see her?””
Vanessa started crying.
“I was scared.””
“Of what?””
“She would take Maya away.””
The sentence was quiet.
Honest.
And somehow that made it worse.
My father stepped back.
“You lied because you were afraid.””
“Yes.””
“You stole money because you were afraid.””
She didn’t answer.
“You controlled everything because you were afraid.””
Tears rolled down her face.
“I loved her.””
I looked at Vanessa.
And for a second, I almost believed her.
Because maybe she did.
Maybe that was the most confusing part.
Maybe someone could love you and still hurt you.
Maybe someone could think they were protecting you while destroying your life.
But love didn’t erase damage.
Not anymore.
My father looked at me.
“Maya.””
I wiped my face.
“What?””
“I’m sorry.””
Those words hurt.
Because I knew he meant them.
And because I knew he had been fooled too.
“I should have asked more questions.””
I shook my head.
“You trusted her.””
“I trusted the wrong person.””
The sentence was quiet.
But Vanessa heard it.
And it broke something in her expression.
Daniel looked at the folder.
“There’s something else.””
My father immediately looked at him.
“What?””
Daniel hesitated.
“The account.””
My stomach tightened.
“What about it?””
“It wasn’t only used for money transfers.””
Everyone became still.
My father’s voice lowered.
“What else?””
Daniel looked at me.
“Records.””
“What records?””
He looked at Vanessa.
She closed her eyes.
“Stop.””
Daniel continued anyway.
“Your information was used to create documents.””
My father’s face changed.
“Documents for what?””
Daniel didn’t answer immediately.
Then he said:
“To make it appear that Maya had agreed to something.””
My heart started racing.
“Agreed to what?””
Silence.
The kind that makes you afraid of the answer.
My father stepped forward.
“Tell me.””
Daniel looked at Vanessa.
She looked broken.
Then Daniel finally said:
“An agreement that would prevent Rachel from ever getting custody.””
The room stopped.
I couldn’t process it.
Custody.
My mother.
Me.
My name had been used.
My life had been used.
Without me knowing.
My father grabbed the edge of the counter.
“Are you saying someone forged my daughter’s agreement?””
Daniel nodded.
“Yes.””
My father looked at Vanessa.
“Did you?””
She cried harder.
“I didn’t think it would go that far.””
Nobody spoke.
Because that sentence was the closest thing to an answer.
My father looked away.
And I saw something in his face.
Not just anger.
Disappointment.
The kind that comes when someone you loved becomes someone you don’t recognize.
Then Daniel’s phone buzzed.
He looked down.
His face changed.
“What?””
My father noticed.
“What now?””
Daniel slowly looked up.
“We have a problem.””
“What problem?””
Daniel stared at the screen.
“Rachel knows.””
My heart stopped.
My father stepped closer.
“Knows what?””
Daniel looked at me.
“She knows Maya found out.””
A cold silence filled the kitchen.
Then my father’s phone buzzed.
Everyone looked down.
A new message appeared.
Not from a stranger.
Not from an unknown number.
A name.
Rachel.
May you like
And only one sentence:
*I’m sorry it took fifteen years to tell you the truth.*
