Chapter 2: The Secret Behind the Silence

Daniel’s words stayed in the room like smoke.

My mother wasn’t the only person who wanted this wedding stopped.

For a few seconds, I couldn’t move.

I couldn’t even breathe properly.

The only sound I heard was the faint hum of the air conditioner and the soft ticking of the clock on my nightstand.

Two days.

Forty-eight hours.

That was how long remained before I was supposed to stand in front of everyone I loved and promise forever to this man.

And now he was telling me someone else wanted it to end.

“Who?”” I asked.

My voice came out quieter than I expected.

Daniel looked away.

That was the moment my heart started sinking.

Because I knew him.

I knew every small expression on his face.

The way he rubbed the back of his neck when he was uncomfortable.

The way he avoided eye contact when he was hiding something.

And right now, he was hiding something.

“Daniel,” I said again.

“Who wanted to stop our wedding?””

Evelyn stood near the window, watching us.

She wasn’t angry anymore.

She looked almost relieved.

Like a secret she had been carrying for months was finally being dragged into the light.

Daniel glanced at her.

“Mom, can you give us a minute?””

Evelyn didn’t move.

“Are you sure that’s what you want?””

His jaw tightened.

“Yes.””

She looked at me.

Not with hatred this time.

With something colder.

Pity.

“I hope you’re ready for the truth, Claire.””

Then she walked past me.

Her shoulder brushed mine.

A deliberate little gesture.

A reminder that she was still trying to intimidate me.

The bedroom door closed behind her.

And suddenly, it was just Daniel and me.

Standing beside the remains of the dress I had dreamed about for almost a year.

I crossed my arms.

“Start talking.””

Daniel exhaled slowly.

“Claire…”

“No.””

I shook my head.

“Don’t say my name like that. Not right now.””

His eyes dropped.

“I know you’re hurt.””

“Hurt?””

I laughed once.

It wasn’t a happy sound.

“My future mother-in-law destroyed my wedding dress, insulted me in my own bedroom, and then you walked in asking for my phone instead of asking if I was okay.””

His face tightened.

“I wasn’t taking her side.””

“That’s exactly what it looked like.””

“I was shocked.””

“So was I.””

Silence.

Daniel looked at the torn lace on the bed.

“I should have told you sooner.””

My stomach turned.

“Told me what?””

He sat down on the edge of the bed.

The same bed where my wedding dress had been lying twenty minutes earlier.

“There’s something about my family you don’t know.””

I stayed standing.

“I’m listening.””

He rubbed his hands together.

“When my father died three years ago, my mother changed.””

I frowned.

“What does that have to do with me?””

“Everything.””

He looked up at me.

“She became obsessed with controlling my life.””

I almost laughed.

“Daniel, your mother has always been controlling.””

“No.””

His voice was sharper than usual.

“This was different.””

That made me pause.

He continued.

“After my father died, she started making decisions for me. Where I should work. Who I should spend time with. What kind of people I should have around me.””

“And you let her?””

His silence answered.

I looked away.

The painful truth was that maybe I should have noticed.

There had been signs.

Little moments I ignored because I loved him.

Like the time Evelyn called during our vacation because she didn’t like the hotel we chose.

Daniel had spent forty minutes apologizing to her.

Or the night she criticized the apartment we picked together and Daniel suggested we “wait until she got used to the idea.””

I had always told myself he was just close to his mother.

I had never considered that maybe he was afraid of her.

“She thinks she knows what’s best for me,” Daniel said.

“She thinks she owns you.””

He didn’t answer.

And that scared me more.

“Who else wanted this wedding stopped?”” I asked.

Daniel looked toward the closed door.

Then lowered his voice.

“My ex-fiancée.””

I froze.

“What?””

The room suddenly felt too small.

“Your what?””

Daniel swallowed.

“I was engaged before.””

I stared at him.

“You were engaged?””

“I was going to tell you.””

“When?””

“After the wedding.””

I actually stepped back.

“After the wedding?””

“I didn’t want it to become a problem.””

I looked at him.

“You thought hiding the fact that you were previously engaged wouldn’t become a problem?””

“It wasn’t like that.””

“Then what was it like?””

Daniel stood up.

“Her name was Vanessa.””

The name sounded strange coming from him.

Like a piece of his life I had never been allowed to touch.

“My mother loved her,” he said.

I looked at the ruined dress.

“And she hates me.””

“Yes.””

The honesty hurt more than a lie.

“Why?””

Daniel hesitated.

That hesitation was enough.

“Why, Daniel?””

“Because Vanessa came from a wealthy family.””

I nodded slowly.

“So this is about money.””

“No.””

“Isn’t it?””

He shook his head.

“Not completely.””

“Then explain.””

Daniel walked toward the window.

“When I ended things with Vanessa, my mother blamed me.””

“For leaving her?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because she thought Vanessa was perfect.””

I crossed my arms.

“And what did Vanessa think?””

Daniel’s face changed.

“She didn’t take it well.””

“What does that mean?””

“She tried to get me back.””

“When?””

“Months ago.””

My heart dropped.

“Months?””

“Yes.””

“And you didn’t tell me?””

“I handled it.””

I stared at him.

“No. You hid it.””

He looked hurt.

“That’s not fair.””

“Fair?””

I pointed at the dress.

“Nothing about today is fair.””

Daniel looked down.

“I didn’t want you to worry.””

“Daniel, I am about to marry you. I deserve to know when another woman is trying to get you back.””

“She wasn’t important.””

“Then why hide her?””

He had no answer.

That silence was becoming a pattern.

I walked toward the bed and picked up a piece of lace from the floor.

My fingers traced the torn edge.

“Did Vanessa know about the wedding?””

Daniel didn’t respond immediately.

That was all the answer I needed.

“She knew.””

“Yes.””

“When?””

“Two months ago.””

I closed my eyes.

Two months.

For two months, another woman knew about my wedding before I did know she was trying to stop it.

“What did she do?””

Daniel looked uncomfortable.

“She contacted me.””

“Show me.””

“What?””

“Messages. Emails. Anything.””

“Claire—”

“Show me.””

He hesitated.

Then he reached for his phone.

My chest tightened as he unlocked it.

He scrolled.

Once.

Twice.

Then stopped.

“There.””

He handed it to me.

The conversation was between Daniel and Vanessa.

The first message was from three weeks earlier.

*Vanessa: I heard you’re really doing this.*

Daniel had replied:

*Daniel: Yes. I’m getting married.*

The next message made my fingers go cold.

*Vanessa: You know your mother agrees with me.*

I looked at Daniel.

He looked away.

I kept reading.

*Vanessa: She knows Claire isn’t right for you.*

*Daniel: Don’t involve my mother.*

*Vanessa: I don’t have to. She already knows what she wants.*

My thumb froze.

Then I saw Daniel’s response.

*Daniel: Stay away from my wedding.*

And Vanessa’s final message.

A message sent five days ago.

*Vanessa: Fine. But when she finds out what happened before you met her, don’t say I didn’t warn you.*

I looked up.

“What happened before I met you?””

Daniel took the phone back too quickly.

“Nothing.””

My eyes narrowed.

“Nothing?””

“Yes.””

“You just showed me a message threatening to expose something, and you’re telling me nothing happened?””

“It’s complicated.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“Complicated is forgetting to buy flowers. Complicated is choosing a wedding venue. This is a secret.””

Daniel looked exhausted.

“There are things I regret.””

“What things?””

Before he could answer, there was a knock on the door.

Neither of us moved.

Then Evelyn’s voice came from the hallway.

“Daniel?””

He looked at me.

“Don’t answer.””

But Evelyn opened the door anyway.

She walked in holding a small envelope.

“I think Claire deserves to know the truth.””

Daniel immediately stood.

“Mom, no.””

Evelyn ignored him.

She handed the envelope to me.

“I found this while cleaning the house.””

I looked at the envelope.

My name was written across the front.

Not my full name.

Just:

*Claire.*

My blood ran cold.

“Where did you get this?””

Evelyn looked directly into my eyes.

“From Daniel’s old apartment.””

Daniel went pale.

“Mom, stop.””

I slowly opened the envelope.

Inside was a single photograph.

A photograph of me.

Taken before I ever met Daniel.

I stared at it.

My hands started shaking.

Because I knew that picture.

I knew exactly where it came from.

And I knew one thing that made my entire world collapse.

Someone had been watching me long before Daniel and I met.

I turned the photo over.

There was writing on the back.

Three words.

May you like

Three words that made Daniel cover his face in horror.

*“She doesn’t know.””*
