Chapter 7: The Wedding Nobody Wanted to Cancel

The photograph slipped from my fingers.

It landed on the floor between us.

Nobody moved.

The message stared back at us.

*The wedding is not canceled.*

*It is the only way to bring the truth out.*

And the final line.

*Marry him, Claire. Then you’ll see who Daniel really is.*

My heart pounded.

Not because I believed the message.

Because I didn’t know who had written it.

And that terrified me more.

“Who sent this?””

Daniel’s voice was sharp.

Nobody answered.

He picked up the photograph again, studying it carefully.

“This was taken yesterday.””

I nodded slowly.

“Yes.””

“We were alone.””

“No.””

He looked at me.

“What?””

I pointed at the picture.

“Look behind us.””

Daniel brought the photograph closer to the light.

In the background, across the street from the wedding venue, there was a figure.

A person standing near a black car.

The face was impossible to see.

But they had been watching us.

Waiting.

Thomas stepped closer.

“Someone has been following you.””

I looked at him.

“How long?””

His silence was enough.

“How long?””

He lowered his eyes.

“Longer than you realize.””

My chest tightened.

I turned toward Daniel.

“Did you know?””

His face changed immediately.

“No.””

“You hesitated.””

“Because I was thinking.””

“Thinking about what?””

“About whether I should tell you something.””

I laughed quietly.

“Of course.””

Daniel looked hurt.

“Claire—”

“No.””

I shook my head.

“Every time something happens, there’s another secret.””

I held up the photograph.

“My mother warned me about lies. She didn’t say anything about danger.””

Thomas spoke quietly.

“Maybe because she knew danger was coming from people you trusted.””

The words hung in the air.

Everyone looked at Evelyn.

Her expression hardened.

“I’m tired of being blamed for everything.””

I turned to her.

“Then explain.””

She stared at me.

“You want the truth?””

“Yes.””

“Fine.””

She walked toward the kitchen.

Everyone followed.

For the first time, Evelyn looked older.

Not powerful.

Not untouchable.

Just tired.

She placed both hands on the counter.

“When Amelia discovered the financial records, she came to me.””

Daniel froze.

“She came to you?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because she trusted me.””

A bitter smile crossed Evelyn’s face.

“She thought I was different.””

Thomas looked away.

“You were.””

Evelyn ignored him.

“She showed me what she found.””

“What did she find?”” I asked.

“Proof.””

“Of what?””

Evelyn looked at Daniel.

“Your grandfather was hiding money.””

Daniel frowned.

“My grandfather?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because the company was failing.””

Silence.

Evelyn continued.

“He created fake accounts. Moved money around. Made it look like the business was healthier than it was.””

Thomas nodded.

“And when Amelia discovered it, she threatened to expose him.””

I looked at Evelyn.

“What did you do?””

Her eyes filled slightly.

Something I never expected to see.

Regret.

“I told her to run.””

Everyone went silent.

I stared at her.

“You helped my mother disappear?””

“Yes.””

The answer shocked me.

“Then why did you let me believe she abandoned me?””

Evelyn looked down.

“Because if anyone knew Amelia was alive…”

She stopped.

“Wait.””

I stepped closer.

“Alive?””

Nobody moved.

The room became ice cold.

“What do you mean?””

Evelyn swallowed.

“I mean…”

Her voice cracked.

“I didn’t know if she survived.””

My heart stopped.

I looked at Thomas.

He looked away.

“You knew?””

He shook his head.

“No.””

“Then who knew?””

Nobody answered.

And then Daniel spoke.

“Vanessa.””

Everyone turned.

“What?””

Daniel looked at us.

“She knew something.””

I remembered her words.

I was trying to keep you alive.

I remembered the way she looked at Thomas.

Like they had shared something.

I grabbed my phone.

“I’m calling her.””

Daniel reached for me.

“Claire.””

“No.””

I stepped back.

“I need answers from someone who hasn’t been lying to me for years.””

The call connected after one ring.

Vanessa answered immediately.

“I was wondering when you’d call.””

My jaw tightened.

“Where are you?””

A pause.

“Why?””

“Because I have questions.””

“I know.””

That annoyed me.

“You always know everything.””

“No.””

Her voice softened.

“I just know what it feels like to be kept in the dark.””

I looked around the room.

At all the people who had secrets.

“Come here.””

Another pause.

Then:

“I’m already outside.””

Everyone froze.

Daniel immediately walked toward the door.

“No.””

Vanessa spoke through the phone.

“I’m not here to fight.””

“Then why are you here?””

“To give Claire the rest of the truth.””

The front door opened.

Vanessa stepped inside.

She looked exhausted.

Not like the confident woman from the messages.

Like someone who had been carrying a heavy secret alone.

Her eyes met mine.

“I’m sorry.””

I almost laughed.

“Sorry?””

“Yes.””

“For what?””

“For knowing about this and not telling you.””

“Why didn’t you?””

She looked at Daniel.

“Because I didn’t know who I could trust.””

That answer hurt.

Because I understood it.

I hated that I understood it.

Vanessa reached into her purse.

She pulled out a small flash drive.

“What is that?””

“The copy of the evidence your mother left.””

Everyone became still.

Thomas stepped forward.

“You found it?””

“Yes.””

“Where?””

Vanessa looked at me.

“She hid it where no one would think to search.””

“Where?””

Vanessa walked closer.

“Inside something she knew would stay connected to this family.””

My stomach tightened.

“The wedding records?””

She shook her head.

“No.””

“Then what?””

Vanessa looked at Daniel.

“Inside Daniel’s father’s personal files.””

Daniel stared at her.

“My father?””

“Yes.””

“But those were destroyed.””

“No.””

Vanessa held up the drive.

“They were hidden.””

Evelyn whispered:

“Who has been hiding them?””

Vanessa looked at her.

“You know.””

The room went quiet.

Evelyn’s face changed.

“No.””

Vanessa didn’t look away.

“Yes.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“Who?””

Nobody answered.

Then Vanessa said:

“Your father.””

Daniel went completely still.

“That’s impossible.””

“Is it?””

“My father died.””

“Yes.””

“Then how could he hide something?””

Vanessa looked at the photograph in his hand.

“Because someone else has been protecting what he left behind.””

Daniel stared.

“Who?””

Vanessa looked at Evelyn.

The answer was immediate.

The room changed.

Evelyn looked like she had been caught.

Daniel stepped back.

“Mom?””

She whispered:

“I didn’t have a choice.””

My heart sank.

“Everyone always says that.””

Evelyn looked at me.

“You think I wanted to spend twenty-five years lying?””

“Yes.””

The word came out before I could soften it.

“Yes, I do.””

She looked away.

Then Daniel said something quietly.

“Why did you destroy Claire’s dress?””

Everyone looked at her.

It was the question nobody had asked.

The beginning of everything.

Evelyn closed her eyes.

“Because I thought if the wedding stopped…”

She looked at me.

“…I could still protect you.””

Daniel shook his head.

“Protect me from what?””

Her answer came in a whisper.

“From becoming exactly like your father.””

Nobody spoke.

Then the lights flickered.

Once.

Twice.

The house went dark again.

But this time, something else happened.

A sound came from upstairs.

A door opening.

Everyone looked toward the staircase.

Thomas whispered:

“That’s impossible.””

“What?””

His face turned pale.

“The only person who knew about that room…”

He stopped.

Daniel grabbed a flashlight.

“What room?””

Thomas looked upstairs.

“The room where Amelia hid the original evidence.””

My blood ran cold.

Because I suddenly understood.

The person who had been watching me.

The person who sent the message.

The person who knew about my mother.

Was not trying to stop the wedding.

They were trying to make sure it happened.

Because they needed everyone in one place.

And now someone was upstairs.

Waiting.

Daniel started walking.

I grabbed his arm.

“Don’t go alone.””

He looked at me.

For a second, neither of us said anything.

Then he nodded.

Together, we walked upstairs.

The door at the end of the hallway was slightly open.

A room nobody had mentioned.

A room that had been hidden for twenty-five years.

Daniel pushed it open.

The flashlight moved across the walls.

Old boxes.

Dust-covered papers.

A broken chair.

And in the center of the room…

A wedding dress.

Not mine.

An old one.

Yellowed with age.

Hanging carefully like someone had preserved it.

I stepped closer.

There was something pinned to it.

A note.

I reached out.

My hands shook as I removed it.

Only one sentence was written.

May you like

My mother’s handwriting.

*Claire, if you found this room, then you finally know the truth about your father.*
