Chapter 4: The Woman Who Knew My Mother

The phone kept vibrating in Daniel’s hand.

Once.

Twice.

Three times.

Each vibration felt like a warning.

I stared at the name on the screen.

*Vanessa.*

The woman who had been sending messages.

The woman who knew secrets about me before I even knew those secrets existed.

The woman who somehow knew about my mother.

A woman I had barely spoken to.

A woman who had no reason to know anything about my family.

Unless she did.

“Answer it.””

My voice surprised even me.

Daniel looked at me.

“Claire—”

“Answer it.””

His thumb hovered over the screen.

For a second, I thought he would refuse.

Then he pressed the button.

“Hello?””

Nothing.

Just silence.

Daniel put the phone on speaker.

“Vanessa?””

A soft breath came through the line.

Then a woman’s voice.

“You finally answered.””

My entire body went tense.

Vanessa’s voice was calmer than I expected.

Not angry.

Not emotional.

Almost like she had been waiting for this exact moment.

“Why are you calling?”” Daniel asked.

A small laugh came through the speaker.

“Still protecting her?””

Daniel looked at me.

I hated that she noticed.

“Answer the question.””

Vanessa ignored him.

“Claire is there, isn’t she?””

I felt a chill.

“How do you know?””

There was a pause.

Then Vanessa said:

“Because I knew she would be the first person you ran to when the truth came out.””

Daniel gripped the phone.

“You need to stop.””

“No, Daniel. You need to listen.””

Her voice sharpened.

“Because your mother has spent years hiding this.””

I looked at Evelyn’s closed bedroom door.

She was somewhere in the house.

Listening.

Waiting.

“What truth?”” Daniel asked.

Vanessa sighed.

“The truth about Claire’s mother.””

My hands tightened.

“Just tell me.””

Daniel looked at me.

“Claire—”

“No.””

I stepped closer to the phone.

“I want to hear it.””

A few seconds passed.

Then Vanessa spoke.

“Your mother’s name was Amelia Parker.””

Hearing her name from a stranger felt wrong.

Like someone had walked into my childhood memories without permission.

“How do you know my mother?””

“I know a lot about her.””

“Why?””

Another pause.

Then:

“Because she was connected to my father.””

Daniel frowned.

“Your father?””

“Yes.””

I looked at Daniel.

“What does her father have to do with my mother?””

Vanessa answered.

“Everything.””

The word hung there.

I hated how familiar that sounded.

Everyone in this family spoke like they had pieces of a puzzle.

Everyone except me.

“I’m tired of people saying things without explaining them,” I said.

My voice shook.

“If you know something, say it.””

Vanessa became quiet.

Then she said:

“Your mother worked for my father twenty-five years ago.””

I blinked.

“That’s impossible.””

“Why?””

“Because my mother was a nurse.””

“Yes.””

The answer was immediate.

Too immediate.

“She worked nights at a hospital.””

“She also worked part-time doing accounting.””

My heart stopped.

I looked at Daniel.

He looked just as surprised.

“How do you know that?””

“Because my father trusted her.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

I backed away.

“My mother never talked about any of this.””

“Maybe because she was trying to protect you.””

“From what?””

Vanessa didn’t answer right away.

Then:

“From people who wanted to find her.””

A cold feeling moved through my chest.

“Why?””

“Because your mother discovered something she wasn’t supposed to discover.””

The room became silent.

“What did she discover?””

Vanessa lowered her voice.

“Money was being moved through fake accounts.””

Daniel froze.

I noticed.

“Daniel?””

He looked at me.

His face was pale.

“What?””

“You know about this.””

He shook his head quickly.

“No.””

“But you recognized it.””

“I recognized the situation.””

“What situation?””

Daniel looked at the floor.

“My father’s company had missing funds.””

“When?””

“Years ago.””

“How many years?””

“Twenty-five.””

I stared at him.

The number hit me.

The same number Vanessa mentioned.

Twenty-five years.

The same time my mother worked for her father.

“You knew this existed.””

“I knew there was an old investigation.””

“And you never told me?””

“I didn’t know it involved your mother.””

I laughed quietly.

Not because anything was funny.

Because everything had become impossible.

“How many secrets are there, Daniel?””

He looked broken.

“I don’t know.””

That answer scared me more than anything.

Vanessa spoke again.

“Claire, listen to me carefully.””

I looked at the phone.

“Why should I?””

“Because Daniel’s mother is not telling you everything.””

I glanced toward the hallway.

“Neither are you.””

A pause.

Then Vanessa said:

“That’s fair.””

I wasn’t expecting that.

“I know you have no reason to trust me.””

“Correct.””

“But I need you to understand something.””

“What?””

“I didn’t try to ruin your wedding because I wanted Daniel back.””

Daniel looked away.

I noticed.

Because that was the first time he didn’t immediately deny something.

“Then why?””

Vanessa answered:

“Because I knew what would happen if you married him.””

My stomach tightened.

“What would happen?””

Silence.

Then:

“You would become part of the family secret.””

I swallowed.

“I already am.””

“No.””

Her voice became urgent.

“You don’t understand.””

“Then explain.””

Before she could answer, another voice interrupted.

“Give me the phone.””

I turned.

Evelyn stood in the doorway.

I hadn’t heard her approach.

Daniel immediately stepped between us.

“No.””

Evelyn’s expression was different.

Not angry.

Afraid.

“You don’t know what you’re doing.””

I stared at her.

“Neither do you.””

She looked at the phone.

“Vanessa, hang up.””

Vanessa laughed softly.

“Still trying to control everyone, Evelyn?””

My eyes moved between them.

“You know each other.””

Nobody spoke.

That was all the confirmation I needed.

Daniel looked at his mother.

“Mom.””

Evelyn closed her eyes.

“Daniel, this is not the time.””

“No.””

His voice hardened.

“This is exactly the time.””

I had never seen him speak to her like that.

Not once.

“Tell me what’s going on.””

Evelyn looked at me.

Then at the phone.

Then back at her son.

“You’re making a mistake.””

Daniel shook his head.

“I’ve spent my entire life doing what you told me was right.””

His voice cracked.

“And I don’t even know what’s real anymore.””

For a moment, Evelyn looked hurt.

Actually hurt.

Then her expression changed.

The coldness returned.

“You think you know everything because Claire showed up with a few tears and a damaged dress?””

My eyes narrowed.

“Don’t.””

Evelyn ignored me.

“You have no idea who she is.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“And you do?””

“Yes.””

The room went still.

Evelyn looked directly at me.

“I know exactly who Claire Parker is.””

My heart pounded.

“How?””

She didn’t answer.

Daniel’s phone suddenly buzzed.

Everyone looked down.

A new message.

From Vanessa.

Daniel opened it.

His face changed.

“What?””

He handed the phone to me.

The message was short.

A photograph was attached.

I opened it.

And my breath disappeared.

It was a picture of my mother.

But not the way I remembered her.

Not in old family photos.

Not smiling in our kitchen.

This picture showed her standing outside a building.

A building I recognized.

Daniel’s family company.

The date was printed in the corner.

Twenty-five years ago.

Underneath the photo was a message.

*Your mother didn’t disappear. She ran.*

I looked up.

“Ran from what?””

Nobody answered.

Then Evelyn whispered:

“She ran because she knew what Daniel’s father had done.””

Daniel stared at his mother.

“What are you saying?””

Evelyn looked away.

And for the first time since I met her…

She looked afraid.

“She found out your father was not the man you thought he was.””

Daniel froze.

“My father?””

A loud crash came from downstairs.

Everyone turned.

Something had fallen.

Then came the sound of the front door opening.

A man’s voice echoed through the house.

“Evelyn?””

She went completely still.

Daniel looked confused.

“Who is that?””

Evelyn didn’t answer.

The man called again.

“Evelyn, we need to talk.””

I watched the blood drain from her face.

Because she knew exactly who had walked into the house.

And when she finally whispered his name…

May you like

I understood why everyone had been so terrified of the truth.

“Amelia’s husband.””
