Chapter 9: The Truth Hidden in My Blood

The document landed on the dusty floor.

Nobody reached for it.

Nobody spoke.

The words printed across the top seemed impossible to understand.

*DNA TEST RESULTS.*

Three words.

Three words that made twenty-five years of secrets feel even heavier.

I stared at the paper.

My name.

My birthday.

My life.

All reduced to a few pages someone had hidden away.

“Claire…”

Daniel’s voice was barely a whisper.

I looked at him.

For the first time since everything began, he looked just as afraid as I felt.

Not afraid of losing the wedding.

Not afraid of losing his family.

Afraid of the truth.

I picked up the document.

My hands shook.

“Who ordered this?””

Nobody answered.

I opened the first page.

The report was dated three weeks ago.

Three weeks.

Someone had tested me recently.

Someone had taken my DNA.

Without my permission.

I looked up.

“Who did this?””

My voice cut through the room.

Everyone looked away.

Then Vanessa spoke.

“I did.””

The room went silent.

Daniel turned sharply.

“You?””

Vanessa nodded.

“I needed to know.””

I stared at her.

“You took my DNA?””

“I took a sample from a glass after you visited the venue.””

My stomach twisted.

“You were there?””

“Yes.””

“When?””

“The day Daniel introduced you to the wedding coordinator.””

I remembered.

That day.

There had been dozens of people around.

Staff.

Guests.

Vendors.

I had never noticed Vanessa.

“You were spying on me.””

“Yes.””

The honesty shocked me.

She didn’t even try to deny it.

“Why?””

Vanessa looked at the document.

“Because I needed proof.””

“Proof of what?””

She swallowed.

“Of who you were.””

I laughed bitterly.

“Everyone keeps saying that.””

I held up the papers.

“Everyone knows who I am except me.””

Vanessa looked guilty.

“I’m sorry.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“I’m tired of apologies.””

I looked at Daniel.

“Your mother watched me.””

Then Vanessa.

“You watched me.””

Then Thomas.

“You knew my entire childhood was built on a lie.””

My voice cracked.

“And somehow I’m the last person to find out.””

Nobody argued.

Because it was true.

I looked back at the DNA report.

“Just tell me.””

I unfolded the page.

“What does it say?””

Vanessa stepped closer.

“It confirms what Amelia suspected.””

“Which is?””

Her eyes moved to Daniel.

Then back to me.

“That Robert Hale was your biological father.””

The room went silent.

I stared at the words.

My father.

The man whose name I had never known.

The man connected to everything.

My hands trembled.

“So it’s true.””

Thomas nodded.

“Yes.””

I looked at Daniel.

“And he was your father’s business partner.””

“Yes.””

“And your family knew him.””

“Yes.””

“And my mother married Thomas to protect me from him.””

“Yes.””

Every answer created another question.

“How did Robert know about me?””

Nobody answered.

Then Evelyn whispered:

“Because he found out Amelia was pregnant.””

I turned.

“You knew?””

She nodded slowly.

“I knew she was carrying Robert’s child.””

The room felt colder.

“Then why didn’t you tell me?””

Evelyn looked broken.

“Because I was afraid.””

“Of what?””

“Of what Robert would do.””

I stared at her.

“He was already dead.””

“Not when Amelia disappeared.””

The words stopped me.

I looked at Thomas.

He nodded.

“Robert wasn’t killed ten years ago.””

“What?””

Daniel looked confused.

“But the records say—”

“The records were changed.””

Another secret.

Another lie.

Thomas continued.

“Robert disappeared. Everyone thought he died. But Amelia knew he was alive.””

My heart raced.

“Where?””

Nobody knew.

That was the terrifying part.

“He vanished.””

Daniel shook his head.

“This makes no sense.””

Thomas looked at him.

“It does when you understand what your father was involved in.””

Daniel went quiet.

I noticed.

He hated hearing that.

Because Daniel had spent his entire life believing his father was someone else.

A successful businessman.

A respected man.

A father.

Not a criminal.

Not a person who destroyed lives.

I looked at the document again.

There was another page.

A second test.

My eyes moved over the words.

Then stopped.

I felt my breath disappear.

“What?””

Daniel noticed my expression.

“What does it say?””

I couldn’t speak.

Vanessa took the paper.

Her face changed.

“No.””

“What?””

She looked at Thomas.

“This isn’t possible.””

I grabbed the page back.

The report wasn’t just confirming my connection to Robert Hale.

It showed something else.

Another DNA comparison.

Another name.

*Daniel Reed Hale.*

My hands went numb.

I looked at Daniel.

“Why is your name on this?””

He stared at the page.

“I don’t know.””

The room exploded into confusion.

“What does it mean?”” I asked.

Nobody answered.

Then Thomas whispered:

“Robert had another child.””

Daniel froze.

“No.””

Thomas looked at him.

“I’m sorry.””

“No.””

Daniel stepped back.

“That’s impossible.””

Evelyn suddenly spoke.

“Stop.””

Everyone looked at her.

She looked terrified.

Not angry.

Not defensive.

Terrified.

“You knew.””

Daniel turned toward her.

“Mom?””

“You knew there was another child?””

Evelyn closed her eyes.

“I knew Robert had a secret.””

“About me?””

She didn’t answer.

That was enough.

Daniel’s face changed.

“All my life…”

His voice cracked.

“All my life you told me my father was a good man.””

Evelyn looked away.

“I was trying to protect you.””

He laughed sadly.

“Everyone’s favorite excuse.””

The sentence hit harder than shouting.

I watched him.

And despite everything, I felt something unexpected.

Pain.

Because Daniel wasn’t the man who created these secrets.

He was trapped inside them too.

I reached for him.

He looked at my hand.

Then at me.

Neither of us spoke.

A loud crash came from downstairs.

Everyone turned.

Again.

Someone was in the house.

Thomas immediately moved toward the door.

“No.””

Daniel stopped him.

“I’ll go.””

“Daniel.””

He looked at me.

“I need to know who has been controlling my entire life.””

I wanted to stop him.

But I understood.

He needed answers too.

We followed him downstairs.

The living room was empty.

The front door was open.

Cold air rushed inside.

Then Daniel stopped.

On the table was a small package.

No name.

No address.

Just one word written on top.

*CLAIRE.*

Nobody touched it.

Finally, I stepped forward.

I opened the box.

Inside was an old photograph.

My mother.

Robert Hale.

And a baby.

Me.

But there was something else.

A handwritten note.

I unfolded it.

My mother’s words.

*Claire, if you are seeing this, then you know who your father was.*

I swallowed.

I kept reading.

*But there is one more truth you must know.*

My heart pounded.

*Robert Hale was not the only person who betrayed us.*

I looked around the room.

Everyone was silent.

The next line made my blood run cold.

*The person who helped him destroy our family is someone you trust.*

A phone buzzed.

Daniel’s phone.

A new message.

From an unknown number.

He opened it.

His face changed.

“What?””

I grabbed the phone.

The message contained a single picture.

A picture taken inside this house.

Taken moments ago.

All of us standing around the box.

Watching.

Waiting.

Underneath it were five words.

*Look behind your mother’s portrait.*

I looked at Evelyn.

Then at the old family portrait hanging above the fireplace.

A portrait of Daniel’s parents.

Evelyn.

And Robert Hale.

Daniel slowly walked toward it.

His hands shook as he removed the frame from the wall.

Behind it was a hidden compartment.

Inside was a small envelope.

A familiar handwriting was on the front.

Not my mother’s.

Not Thomas’s.

Evelyn’s.

Daniel opened it.

May you like

The first sentence was enough to destroy everything.

*Evelyn, if Claire ever discovers the truth, make sure she never learns that you were the one who gave her away.*
