Chapter 8: The Father I Never Knew

The note trembled between my fingers.

My mother’s handwriting.

Again.

After all these years, Amelia Parker was still finding ways to enter my life.

Still revealing pieces of a story she had been forced to leave behind.

But this time, the words were different.

Not about Daniel.

Not about his family.

About me.

*Claire, if you found this room, then you finally know the truth about your father.*

My breath caught.

My father.

A word I had almost stopped using.

Because my father had never been a person in my life.

He was a blank space.

A question nobody wanted to answer.

Growing up, I had asked my mother about him only once.

I was eight years old.

I remember sitting at the kitchen table, swinging my legs under the chair while she washed dishes.

“Mom?””

She turned around.

“Yes, sweetheart?””

“Why don’t I have a dad?””

The plate in her hands froze.

Only for a second.

But I noticed.

Children always notice things adults think they hide.

Then she smiled sadly.

“Sometimes people leave before we’re ready.””

I had accepted that answer.

Because children accept the stories they are given.

Adults are the ones who realize the stories were incomplete.

I looked around the hidden room.

The old wedding dress.

The boxes.

The secrets.

“Who is my father?””

Nobody answered.

Not Daniel.

Not Thomas.

Not Evelyn.

Not Vanessa.

And somehow, that silence told me more than words could.

I looked at Thomas.

“You knew.””

His face tightened.

“Claire…”

“You knew my mother’s husband wasn’t my father.””

The room became painfully quiet.

Thomas looked down.

“I knew.””

My chest tightened.

“How long?””

“Since before you were born.””

The words hit harder than I expected.

Before I was born.

My entire life had been built on information everyone else had.

Except me.

“Then tell me.””

Thomas looked at the old wedding dress.

“Your mother married me because she needed protection.””

I frowned.

“What does that mean?””

“It means Amelia was already in danger.””

“From Daniel’s family?””

“Yes.””

Daniel stepped closer.

His face was full of disbelief.

“My family?””

Thomas nodded.

“Your grandfather discovered Amelia knew too much.””

“About the company?””

“About everything.””

Daniel looked sick.

“And you married her?””

“Yes.””

“Even though you knew?””

Thomas looked at him.

“Because I loved her.””

The answer silenced everyone.

Not a strategic marriage.

Not an arrangement.

Love.

Real love.

A love that had somehow survived twenty-five years of secrets.

“But I’m not your daughter,” I whispered.

Thomas’s eyes softened.

“No.””

The honesty hurt.

“But you raised me?””

“No.””

I froze.

“What?””

Thomas looked devastated.

“I wanted to.””

My heart dropped.

“But I couldn’t.””

“Why?””

“Because after Amelia disappeared, they were watching everyone connected to her.””

“Who?””

He didn’t answer.

I already knew.

The powerful people.

The ones everyone feared.

The ones who could erase evidence.

The ones who could make a woman disappear.

Thomas continued.

“Your mother gave you to someone she trusted.””

“Who?””

His eyes moved toward the door.

Toward Evelyn.

Everyone followed his gaze.

My stomach turned.

“No.””

Evelyn looked away.

“No.””

I stepped closer.

“What are you saying?””

Thomas closed his eyes.

“Your mother asked Evelyn to protect you.””

The room went silent.

I stared at Evelyn.

The woman who had destroyed my dress.

The woman who had insulted me.

The woman who had spent months making me feel like I didn’t belong.

She had known me before I knew her.

“You knew who I was.””

Evelyn didn’t answer.

“You knew my mother.””

Still silence.

“You knew everything.””

Finally, Evelyn whispered:

“Yes.””

The word broke something inside me.

I stepped back.

“Why?””

Her eyes filled.

“I promised Amelia.””

I laughed quietly.

“No.””

I shook my head.

“You don’t get to say that like it makes everything okay.””

“I was trying to protect you.””

“You lied to me.””

“Yes.””

“You treated me like I was nothing.””

Her face changed.

Pain.

Real pain.

“I thought if I pushed you away…”

She stopped.

“Then what?””

She looked at me.

“Then you would leave Daniel.””

I stared at her.

“You wanted me gone.””

“Yes.””

The honesty was brutal.

“Because you believed Daniel would become a target if he married me.””

She nodded.

“I believed the people who hurt Amelia would come back.””

“And you thought destroying my wedding dress would make me leave?””

Her eyes lowered.

“I thought I could scare you.””

I looked at the ruined memories downstairs.

The dress.

The wedding.

Everything I had built.

“You tried to break me.””

“No.””

She shook her head.

“I tried to save you.””

“Those are not the same thing.””

Nobody spoke.

Because everyone knew it.

Even Evelyn.

Daniel looked at his mother.

“I can’t believe you did this.””

She looked at him.

“I did it because I love you.””

He shook his head.

“Love doesn’t look like this.””

The sentence made her go still.

For the first time, Evelyn looked like she understood the damage she had caused.

Not just to me.

To him.

I looked back at the note.

There was more writing underneath.

I hadn’t noticed because my hands were shaking.

I continued reading.

*Claire, the man you know as your father was never your father.*

My heart raced.

*Your real father was someone connected to the company. Someone who wanted Amelia silent.*

I stopped.

Someone connected to the company.

Someone who wanted my mother silent.

Daniel stepped closer.

“What does it say?””

I handed him the note.

He read silently.

Then his expression changed.

“Claire…”

“What?””

He looked at Thomas.

“You know who it is.””

Thomas didn’t answer.

Daniel’s voice became louder.

“You know.””

Thomas closed his eyes.

“Yes.””

“Who?””

The older man looked at me.

“I promised Amelia I would only tell you when you were ready.””

I almost laughed.

“Ready?””

I looked around the room.

“Was I ever supposed to be ready for this?””

Thomas nodded sadly.

“No.””

He took a breath.

“Because the truth is not something anyone is ready for.””

Then he said the name.

The name that changed everything.

“Your father was Robert Hale.””

Nobody moved.

Daniel’s face went white.

Because he knew that name.

“Robert Hale?””

Thomas nodded.

Daniel looked at me.

“My father’s business partner.””

The room spun.

“No.””

Thomas continued.

“Robert worked with Daniel’s grandfather. He knew about the illegal transactions. He helped hide them.””

I shook my head.

“My mother never told me.””

“Because she wanted you to have a normal life.””

I looked at Daniel.

“My father was your father’s business partner?””

“Yes.””

A terrible realization formed.

My mother.

Daniel’s family.

The company.

The evidence.

All connected.

Vanessa spoke quietly.

“That’s why your mother disappeared.””

I turned to her.

“Because of Robert?””

“Yes.””

“But Robert is dead.””

Nobody answered.

I looked at them.

“What?””

Daniel swallowed.

“Robert Hale died ten years ago.””

Thomas nodded.

“Yes.””

“Then why are we still afraid of him?””

Nobody spoke.

Then Evelyn whispered:

“Because dead men can leave behind living secrets.””

A phone rang.

Everyone jumped.

It was Daniel’s.

Unknown number.

He looked at me.

Then answered.

“Hello?””

A distorted voice came through the speaker.

“Did she find the room?””

Daniel froze.

“Who is this?””

The voice ignored him.

“Claire, if you can hear me…”

I stepped closer.

The voice continued.

“Your mother left you one final thing.””

My heart pounded.

“What?””

A pause.

Then:

“The truth about why she chose Daniel.””

Daniel looked at me.

The voice continued.

“Because twenty-five years ago, Amelia didn’t just save your life.””

The line crackled.

“She saved his.””

The call ended.

Nobody moved.

Then Daniel slowly looked toward the old wedding dress hanging in the room.

Something was hidden inside it.

Something nobody had noticed.

A small piece of fabric stitched into the lining.

He pulled it out.

A folded document.

My name was written on it.

But underneath my name was another sentence.

One that made Daniel drop it instantly.

*DNA TEST RESULTS.*

And the date at the top was from three weeks before our wedding.

May you like

Someone had recently opened it.

Someone had been preparing for us to find it.
