Chapter 14: The Truth Ariana Never Knew

The call from the treatment center changed everything again.

I thought we had reached the end.

I thought Vanessa’s confession was the final piece.

I thought the truth had finally caught up with everyone who had hidden it.

But life had a cruel way of reminding me that secrets rarely come alone.

My father stood near the altar, phone still in his hand.

Malik stayed beside me.

Not in front of me.

Not protecting me like I was fragile.

Beside me.

That mattered.

“What did they find?”” I asked.

My father looked down.

“A file created before your first treatment.””

My eyebrows tightened.

“Before?””

He nodded.

“The center reviewed old records after seeing the documents we brought today.””

Vanessa looked nervous again.

But this time, her fear was different.

Because even she didn’t know what was coming.

My father continued.

“They found a request for information made months before your diagnosis became public.””

I felt confused.

“Who requested it?””

He looked at the paper.

“That’s the problem.””

A pause.

“The request was made under your name.””

My blood ran cold.

“My name?””

Malik grabbed my hand.

“Ariana, what does that mean?””

“I don’t know.””

And for once, I truly didn’t.

My father looked at Vanessa.

“Did you know about this?””

She shook her head.

“No.””

Everyone noticed.

Because this was the first time Vanessa answered without hesitation.

She genuinely didn’t know.

My father looked back at me.

“There’s more.””

Of course there was.

There was always more.

“The file contains a note.””

“What note?””

He hesitated.

Then opened the document.

“It says you asked the treatment center not to disclose information to anyone.””

My heart stopped.

“That’s normal.””

My father nodded.

“Yes.””

“Then what’s wrong?””

He looked at the next line.

“The note says you specifically named one person you did not want contacted.””

A chill moved through me.

“Who?””

My father looked at Malik.

Then back at me.

“The person you didn’t want contacted was Vanessa.””

The room went silent.

I looked at her.

She looked shocked.

“I didn’t know that.””

My father believed her.

And somehow that scared me more.

Because if Vanessa didn’t know…

then who created the request?

I looked at Malik.

“I never wrote that.””

He believed me.

Immediately.

“I know.””

That meant more than he understood.

Because hours earlier, I wasn’t sure if anyone would.

My father turned another page.

“There is a signature.””

My stomach tightened.

“No.””

Not another signature.

Not another name.

Not another person.

But there it was.

A signature at the bottom.

And this time, I recognized it.

I knew the handwriting.

Because I had seen it every day growing up.

My father’s face fell.

I stared.

“Dad?””

He didn’t answer.

The signature belonged to him.

The church disappeared around me.

“What?””

My father looked devastated.

“I didn’t write that.””

Nobody spoke.

The impossible had happened again.

A document existed.

A signature existed.

But the person whose name appeared on it denied creating it.

Malik looked at the page.

“Someone forged it.””

My father nodded.

“Yes.””

Vanessa looked at him.

“Then someone has been setting all of us against each other.””

The realization landed.

This wasn’t just about Vanessa.

It never was.

Someone had been moving pieces.

Creating secrets.

Changing records.

Turning people against each other.

My father looked at me.

“I’m sorry.””

I shook my head.

“Why?””

“Because I should have protected you better.””

My eyes filled.

“You did.””

“No.””

His voice broke.

“I protected you from the world.””

He looked around the church.

“But I didn’t protect you from the people closest to us.””

Nobody moved.

Then Malik noticed something.

“The letter.””

Everyone looked at him.

“What?””

He pointed toward Celeste’s letter.

“The letter said someone inside the family was helping.””

My father nodded.

“Yes.””

“But it never said Vanessa was the only person.””

The words chilled me.

Because he was right.

We had assumed.

We had blamed.

We had found one person responsible.

But maybe there was someone else.

Someone who had stayed hidden.

Someone who wanted Vanessa exposed.

Someone who wanted all of us destroyed.

Then my father’s phone rang again.

This time, he looked terrified.

He answered.

Listened.

Then slowly lowered it.

“What happened?””

He looked directly at me.

“They found who accessed the original files.””

Malik stepped forward.

“Who?””

My father’s eyes moved across the church.

Past Vanessa.

Past Malik.

Past the guests.

Until they stopped.

On someone standing near the back.

Someone who had been silent the entire time.

Someone who had watched everything unfold.

May you like

My father whispered:

“It was someone at this wedding.””
