Chapter 7: The Voice That Wasn’t Mine

The recording ended.

But my voice remained in the room.

Not because anyone could hear it anymore.

Because everyone was replaying those words in their minds.

“I can’t let Malik find out the truth…”

The sentence hung over the church like smoke.

I stared at Vanessa’s phone.

At the screen.

At the waveform frozen in place.

At the proof she believed would destroy me.

But something inside me felt wrong.

Deeply wrong.

Because I knew my own voice.

I knew my own memories.

And I had never said those words to Vanessa.

Not in a message.

Not in a call.

Not ever.

Malik slowly turned toward me.

His face wasn’t angry.

That would have been easier.

He looked hurt.

Like he was trying to understand how the woman he loved could still be a mystery to him.

“Ariana…”

I shook my head immediately.

“No.””

My voice trembled.

“No, I didn’t send that.””

Vanessa crossed her arms.

“You expect everyone to believe that?””

“Yes,” I said.

“Because it’s true.””

Her smile was small.

Cold.

“Convenient.””

My father stepped between us.

“Don’t speak to her like that.””

Vanessa looked at him.

“Why? Because she’s sick?””

The entire church reacted.

Even Malik looked disgusted.

“Mom.””

But Vanessa continued.

“She has everyone protecting her because they feel sorry for her.””

My hands shook.

Not from weakness.

From anger.

For the first time all day, I wasn’t embarrassed.

I was furious.

“You don’t get to use my illness as a weapon.””

Vanessa looked at me.

“You don’t get to use it as a shield.””

The words cut.

Because they sounded believable to people who didn’t know the truth.

That was Vanessa’s talent.

She never needed to invent a perfect lie.

She only needed to mix it with something real.

Malik looked at the phone.

“Play it again.””

Vanessa raised an eyebrow.

“What?””

“Play it again.””

Her confidence faltered for a second.

Then she pressed the screen.

The recording started.

My voice filled the church.

“I don’t know how long I have left…”

My chest tightened.

I closed my eyes.

I remembered that night.

I remembered sitting alone in my apartment after treatment.

I remembered crying.

I remembered recording a message.

But not this one.

Not for Vanessa.

Not about hiding something.

I remembered deleting it.

Or at least I thought I did.

The recording continued.

“I can’t let Malik find out the truth…”

Malik looked at me.

“Ariana…”

I opened my eyes.

“That’s my voice.””

Nobody spoke.

“But those aren’t my words.””

Vanessa laughed softly.

“That doesn’t even make sense.””

My father looked at the phone.

“Let me see that.””

Vanessa pulled it back.

“No.””

That single reaction caught everyone’s attention.

My father narrowed his eyes.

“If you’re so confident, why won’t you let anyone examine it?””

Vanessa’s expression changed.

Only slightly.

But enough.

Malik noticed.

“Mom.””

She looked at him.

“I don’t need to prove anything.””

“No.””

His voice was quiet.

“You do.””

The pain on her face was immediate.

Because she wasn’t used to him taking anyone else’s side.

Especially mine.

My father reached into his jacket.

“I brought something else.””

Vanessa’s face went pale again.

“What?””

He pulled out a small envelope.

“I had the treatment center review the contact history after I found out someone had accessed Ariana’s file.””

My heart raced.

“Dad…”

He looked at me.

“I didn’t want to believe it either.””

My stomach dropped.

“What did they find?””

He looked at Vanessa.

“They found unusual activity.””

The guests whispered.

Vanessa shook her head.

“You’re making accusations without evidence.””

My father opened the envelope.

“Then let’s talk about evidence.””

He removed a printed page.

“This is the original recording file.””

Vanessa froze.

Malik looked confused.

“What recording?””

My father looked at the phone in Vanessa’s hand.

“The message she played.””

Silence.

Then he said:

“The metadata shows it was edited.””

The church exploded with whispers.

Vanessa’s face lost all color.

Malik stared at her.

“Edited?””

My father nodded.

“Yes.””

I looked at Vanessa.

“You changed my voice.””

She immediately responded.

“No.””

But the speed of her answer made everyone notice.

My father continued.

“Someone took an old voice recording and cut pieces together.””

Malik looked sick.

“My mother…”

He couldn’t finish.

Vanessa looked at him.

“Malik, listen to me.””

But he stepped away.

“No.””

His voice broke.

“No, I need you to listen to me.””

The woman who had controlled every room she entered suddenly looked powerless.

“I did what I thought was right.””

Malik shook his head.

“You keep saying that.””

He looked at me.

“You destroyed her wedding.””

Then at Vanessa.

“You humiliated her.””

His eyes filled with tears.

“And now you changed her voice?””

Vanessa opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

Because for the first time, she had no explanation.

My father placed the documents back together.

“There’s one more thing.””

Everyone looked at him.

Vanessa whispered:

“No.””

My father looked at her.

“Yes.””

He held up another page.

“This is the person who originally created the edited recording.””

My heartbeat stopped.

Because whoever did this had not just betrayed me.

They had planned it.

And when my father turned the paper around, Malik saw the name.

His face changed instantly.

“No…”

I looked at him.

“Who is it?””

He couldn’t answer.

He just stared at the page.

May you like

Then whispered:

“That’s impossible.””
