Chapter 8: The Person Behind The Recording
Malik looked like the ground had disappeared beneath him.
For several seconds, he said nothing.
He just stared at the paper in my father’s hand.
I had never seen him look that afraid.
Not when we received difficult news.
Not during my treatments.
Not even when Vanessa tore away my wig in front of everyone.
This was different.
This was recognition.
“Malik,” I whispered.
He didn’t look at me.
“Who is it?””
His jaw tightened.
My father answered.
“The file shows the recording was sent from an account connected to someone close to this family.””
Vanessa immediately looked away.
That was the first thing I noticed.
Not the paper.
Not Malik’s reaction.
Her reaction.
She already knew.
My father handed the page to Malik.
He took it slowly.
His eyes scanned the name.
Then he closed his eyes.
“No.””
The word came out like a prayer.
“No, that’s not possible.””
I stepped closer.
“Malik, please.””
He finally looked at me.
And I saw something I had never seen before.
Fear.
Not fear of losing me.
Fear of losing the version of his life he believed was real.
“It was sent from my sister’s account.””
The room went silent.
Vanessa’s daughter.
I had met her only a few times.
She had smiled at me.
Complimented my wedding dress.
Told me she was happy her brother found someone who loved him.
My father looked at Vanessa.
“Did you know?””
Vanessa didn’t answer.
That silence was enough.
Malik looked at his mother.
“You knew.””
She shook her head.
“I didn’t know what she did.””
“But you knew something.””
Vanessa’s eyes filled with frustration.
“I knew she was worried.””
“Worried?””
Malik’s voice rose.
“She edited my fiancée’s voice.””
Vanessa flinched.
“Don’t say it like that.””
“How else should I say it?””
The church watched him break.
The son who spent his entire life defending his mother was finally seeing the damage she had caused.
Vanessa lowered her voice.
“She was trying to protect you.””
Malik laughed once.
A painful sound.
“Everybody keeps saying that.””
He looked around.
“My mother.””
He looked at me.
“Me.””
His voice cracked.
“Everyone keeps deciding what I can handle.””
I felt tears fall.
Because he was right.
Everyone had been making choices for him.
Including me.
“I’m sorry,” I whispered.
He looked at me.
And for a moment, everything else disappeared.
The anger.
The accusations.
The crowd.
Just us.
“I know why you were scared,” he said.
I nodded.
“But I wish you trusted me enough to be scared with me.””
That hurt because it was true.
I had wanted to protect our love.
But I had accidentally built a wall around it.
Before I could answer, Vanessa spoke.
“Ariana wasn’t innocent.””
The moment broke.
My father turned.
“Enough.””
“No.””
Vanessa stepped forward.
“I’m tired of everyone pretending I’m the only person who made mistakes.””
Malik looked at her.
“Mom, stop.””
She didn’t.
“She knew about something else.””
My heart sank.
“What?””
Vanessa looked at Malik.
“You never told her about the adoption papers.””
The air changed.
I looked at Malik.
“What adoption papers?””
His face went completely still.
Vanessa smiled sadly.
“There it is.””
My father frowned.
“What are you talking about?””
Vanessa looked at me.
“You think Malik’s family is simple?””
She shook her head.
“You think everyone who loves you has been honest?””
Malik’s voice became low.
“Mom.””
But she continued.
“Tell her.””
He didn’t move.
“Tell her what happened before you met.””
My stomach tightened.
Because this was no longer about Vanessa.
This was about Malik.
And I realized something terrifying.
Everyone in that church had been hiding something.
Everyone except me.
Or maybe…
Maybe I was just the last person to find out.
Malik looked at the floor.
Then at me.
“Ariana…”
My heart broke at the fear in his voice.
“What aren’t you telling me?””
He opened his mouth.
Nothing came out.
Vanessa whispered:
May you like
“Tell her why your name wasn’t always Malik.””
The church went silent.
