Chapter 3: The Truth Behind The Smile

Nobody moved after Malik asked that question.

The church lights continued shining.

The flowers remained perfectly arranged.

The wedding cake waited untouched in the corner.

Everything looked beautiful.

Everything looked normal.

Except nothing was normal anymore.

Vanessa stared at her son.

For years, she had been the person Malik trusted most.

The person whose advice he followed.

The person who always seemed to know what was best.

But now he was looking at her like he didn’t recognize her.

“Mom,” Malik said again.

“Answer me.””

Vanessa straightened her shoulders.

The old confidence tried to return.

“It’s not what you think.””

My father let out a quiet laugh.

“That’s what people say when they know exactly what it looks like.””

Vanessa turned toward him.

“You need to leave.””

“No.””

The word came from me.

Everyone looked at me.

I surprised myself too.

Because my voice didn’t shake.

Not this time.

I lowered my hands from my head.

I stopped trying to hide.

For the first time that day, I stood there as myself.

No wig.

No pretending.

No apology.

“I’m done leaving every room because someone else is uncomfortable with my truth.””

Malik looked at me.

His eyes filled with emotion.

“Ariana…”

I looked at him.

“I wanted to tell you.””

He nodded slowly.

“I believe you.””

Those three words almost broke me.

Because after everything, that was all I had wanted.

To be believed.

Vanessa stepped between us emotionally, even if she didn’t physically move.

“Malik, you’re letting your emotions control you.””

He looked at her.

“No. I’m finally listening.””

The guests watched silently.

Some looked ashamed.

Some looked angry.

Some looked at Vanessa with disappointment.

Because cruelty becomes harder to defend when everyone sees it clearly.

Vanessa noticed the room turning against her.

So she changed tactics.

She pointed at me.

“She knew this would happen.””

I frowned.

“What?””

“She knew people would feel sorry for her.””

My father’s face darkened.

“You still don’t understand what you did.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“She kept secrets from my son.””

“And you invaded her privacy,” my father replied.

“I was protecting him.””

“No,” I said.

My voice was quiet.

But everyone heard it.

“You were protecting your control.””

The words landed.

Vanessa stared at me.

For a moment, I saw something underneath her anger.

Not guilt.

Not regret.

Fear.

She was afraid because she couldn’t control what happened next.

Malik looked at his mother.

“Did you know about Ariana’s treatments?””

Vanessa didn’t answer.

That was the answer.

His face changed.

“Mom.””

“I was trying to help.””

My stomach dropped.

Help?

That word sounded impossible.

My father stepped closer.

“You call that help?””

Vanessa looked at him.

“You don’t know the whole story.””

“Then tell it.””

She stayed silent.

Malik’s voice became quieter.

“What did you do?””

The question hung in the air.

Vanessa looked around the church.

Hundreds of eyes.

Cameras.

Witnesses.

No place left to hide.

My father held the folder firmly.

“The reason this file matters is because someone made decisions about Ariana’s treatment without her permission.””

A wave of whispers spread.

My breath caught.

I looked at my father.

“What are you saying?””

He looked at me with sadness.

“I’m saying you deserve to know the truth.””

Vanessa immediately stepped forward.

“James, don’t.””

That was the first time she sounded afraid.

Not angry.

Not arrogant.

Afraid.

Malik heard it.

And his face went pale.

“Don’t what?””

Vanessa looked at him.

Nothing came out.

My father looked toward the sealed folder.

“We came here today because Ariana was going to start her marriage with a secret she didn’t choose.””

He looked at Vanessa.

“But she isn’t the one who should be explaining herself.””

The entire church held its breath.

Malik slowly walked toward his mother.

“Mom…”

Vanessa whispered.

“I did what I thought was necessary.””

My heart stopped.

Because those words confirmed something I didn’t want to believe.

My father looked down at the folder.

His thumb pressed against the seal.

Everyone watched.

Malik.

Vanessa.

The guests.

Me.

Then my father looked at me.

“I’m sorry you had to hear it this way.””

I felt tears fall again.

But this time, they weren’t tears of humiliation.

They were tears because the truth I had been waiting for was finally coming.

My father began to open the folder.

And Vanessa took one step backward.

Like she already knew what was inside.

Like she knew the secret was no longer hers.

Then Malik saw something on her face.

Something he had never seen before.

Fear.

May you like

And he whispered:

“Mom… what did you do to my wife?””
