Chapter 9: The Name He Left Behind

The sentence didn’t make sense.

Not at first.

“Tell her why your name wasn’t always Malik.””

I stared at Vanessa.

Then at my husband.

Waiting for someone to laugh.

Waiting for someone to say she was lying.

Nobody did.

Malik stood completely still.

Like the secret he had buried had finally found him.

I whispered his name.

“Malik?””

He looked at me.

“I can explain.””

Those words terrified me.

Because people only said them when there was something that needed explaining.

“Then explain.””

My voice was quieter than I expected.

He looked around the church.

At our guests.

At our families.

At the altar where we were supposed to make promises.

Then he looked back at me.

“My name was different when I was younger.””

Vanessa crossed her arms.

“There’s more.””

Malik’s eyes flashed with anger.

“Mom.””

“No.””

Her voice was tired now.

Not cruel.

Just exhausted.

“You’re angry because the truth is finally coming out.””

My father stepped beside me.

“Let him speak.””

Malik nodded slowly.

“When I was a child, I was adopted.””

I blinked.

The information hit me.

Not because adoption was something shameful.

It wasn’t.

But because I realized how much of his life I didn’t know.

“I don’t understand.””

He looked at me.

“My parents changed my name after the adoption.””

I swallowed.

“Why?””

His eyes moved toward Vanessa.

“Because my biological family was dangerous.””

The church became quiet again.

I looked at Vanessa.

She looked away.

And that told me there was more.

Malik continued.

“I didn’t tell you because I wanted to tell you properly.””

I shook my head.

“You had years.””

“I know.””

The pain in his voice was real.

“I was scared.””

I almost laughed.

Not because it was funny.

Because it sounded familiar.

We were both standing there because we were afraid.

Two people who loved each other.

Two people who hid the things that scared us most.

Vanessa watched us.

Then said softly:

“You see?””

Everyone looked at her.

“We’re all guilty of hiding things.””

My father’s expression hardened.

“But not everyone destroys someone else’s life.””

Vanessa looked at him.

“You don’t know what I was trying to prevent.””

Malik stepped forward.

“Mom, what are you saying?””

She looked at him.

“I found out something about Ariana.””

My body went cold.

“What?””

Vanessa reached into her purse again.

This time, she pulled out a photograph.

She walked toward Malik.

He took it reluctantly.

Then his expression changed.

I couldn’t see what was in the picture.

“Malik?””

He looked at me.

Then back at the photo.

“What is this?””

Vanessa whispered:

“The reason I never trusted her.””

My father immediately moved.

“Don’t do this.””

But Malik held up the picture.

“Wait.””

He stared at it.

“Ariana…”

I looked at him.

“What?””

He hesitated.

Then turned the photo around.

And my heart stopped.

Because the picture showed me.

Years earlier.

Before Malik.

Before our wedding.

Before my diagnosis.

I was standing beside a woman I recognized.

A woman I had not seen in years.

My stomach dropped.

Because I knew exactly who she was.

My father saw the picture.

And his face changed.

“Ariana…”

I couldn’t speak.

Malik looked confused.

“You know her?””

I nodded slowly.

“Yes.””

“Who is she?””

I stared at the photograph.

At the woman smiling beside me.

At the memory I had buried.

Then Vanessa said the words that made everyone freeze.

“That woman is the reason Ariana was never supposed to marry you.””

My father’s voice turned sharp.

“Vanessa, stop.””

But Malik looked at me.

Not Vanessa.

Me.

“Ariana.””

His voice broke.

“Who is she?””

I opened my mouth.

And for the first time all day…

I had no answer.

Because the woman in that picture was someone I had promised myself I would never speak about again.

And now she was standing between me and the man I loved.

The church waited.

May you like

Malik waited.

And Vanessa smiled like she finally had the secret that could destroy me.
