Chapter 11: The Truth Behind The Disappearance
Nobody moved.
The warehouse was suddenly too bright.
The kind of bright that exposed everything.
No shadows.
No places to hide.
Cole stood in the doorway, his expression unreadable.
Damien looked like he had seen a ghost.
But the ghost was standing in front of him.
“Elena,” Cole said quietly.
I looked between them.
Two men.
Both claiming they were protecting me.
Both claiming the other was the reason my life collapsed.
I felt exhausted.
“Tired of secrets,” I said.
Neither man spoke.
I stepped away from Damien.
“Both of you.””
My voice echoed.
“I want the truth.””
Cole looked at Damien.
Damien looked at Cole.
Like they were having a conversation without words.
That made me angrier.
“No.””
They looked at me.
“No more.””
I pointed at them.
“You don’t get to communicate like I’m not standing here.””
Damien lowered his eyes.
Cole took a slow breath.
“Elena…”
“Start talking.””
For several seconds, nobody did.
Then Damien spoke.
“I wasn’t dead.””
I stared.
“I know.””
“I needed people to believe I was.””
“Why?””
His jaw tightened.
“Because someone was trying to erase me.””
“Who?””
He looked at Cole.
My heart sank.
Again.
Always Cole.
“Don’t.””
Cole’s voice was sharp.
Damien ignored him.
“Cole found evidence that someone inside my company was moving money illegally.””
Cole shook his head.
“That’s not the whole story.””
Damien looked at him.
“No. It’s not.””
I crossed my arms.
“Then what is the whole story?””
Damien looked at me.
“The person stealing from me wasn’t just after money.””
“What were they after?””
“Control.””
The word hung there.
“They wanted everything I built.””
I looked at Cole.
“And you found out?””
Cole nodded.
“Yes.””
“Then why didn’t you tell me?””
His expression changed.
“Because Damien asked me not to.””
I laughed.
A bitter laugh.
“Of course.””
Damien stepped forward.
“I was trying to keep you away from it.””
“By pretending to die?””
“I thought it was the only way.””
My eyes filled.
“You thought destroying me was the only way?””
The pain on his face was real.
That made it worse.
“I watched you from a distance.””
I froze.
“What?””
“I saw you at the hospital.””
My breath caught.
“I saw you crying.””
My hands trembled.
“And you did nothing?””
Damien looked broken.
“If I came back, they would know I was alive.””
“Who?””
He hesitated.
That hesitation terrified me.
“Damien.””
He looked at me.
“The person who wanted me gone.””
I shook my head.
“You keep saying that.””
I stepped closer.
“Who?””
Before he could answer, Cole spoke.
“Elena.””
I turned.
“What?””
Cole looked serious.
“You need to know something.””
Damien’s face changed.
“No.””
Cole continued.
“Your husband didn’t disappear because he was being hunted.””
My stomach tightened.
“Then why?””
Cole looked at Damien.
“Because he was trying to find out who betrayed him.””
Silence.
Damien looked angry.
“Don’t do this.””
Cole ignored him.
“He believed the person was someone close.””
I whispered:
“Mara?””
Damien immediately shook his head.
“No.””
“Your mother?””
“No.””
“Then who?””
Neither answered.
My patience broke.
“Who?””
Cole looked at me.
Then he said:
“Me.””
The word hit like a gunshot.
I stared.
“You?””
Damien moved forward.
“Elena, don’t listen to him.””
But Cole continued.
“Damien thought I betrayed him.””
My eyes moved between them.
“Did you?””
Cole didn’t answer.
That was enough.
I felt sick.
“You don’t get to stand there silently.””
Cole looked down.
“No.””
My heart dropped.
“No?””
He looked at me.
“I didn’t betray him.””
Damien laughed bitterly.
“That’s exactly what a traitor would say.””
Cole looked at him.
“You don’t know everything.””
“Then tell her.””
The challenge hung in the air.
Cole looked at me.
“I didn’t betray Damien.””
A pause.
“I saved him.””
I stared.
“What?””
Cole’s voice lowered.
“Because the person trying to destroy Damien wasn’t after his money.””
He looked at me.
“They were after you.””
My entire body went still.
“Me?””
Cole nodded.
“And Damien disappeared because he discovered why.””
The warehouse became silent.
Then Damien whispered:
“Elena…”
His face filled with fear.
“The person behind this is someone you trust.””
My phone buzzed.
Everyone froze.
A new message.
From an unknown number.
I opened it.
