Chapter 4: The Stranger At The Door

The person standing in the doorway didn’t move.

Neither did we.

For several seconds, the entire chapel froze in silence.

The bright funeral lights reflected against the marble floor, making the figure’s shadow stretch toward us like a warning.

I couldn’t see the person’s face clearly.

Only the outline.

Only the fact that someone had been listening.

Attorney Cole immediately stepped in front of me.

“Who are you?”” he demanded.

The person slowly raised both hands.

“I’m not here to hurt anyone.””

The voice was familiar.

Not to me.

But to Mara.

Her face changed instantly.

The color drained from her cheeks.

“No.””

I looked at her.

“You know him?””

Mara didn’t answer.

She just stared.

The figure stepped forward into the light.

A Black man in his early forties.

Gray jacket.

Tired eyes.

A face filled with the kind of fear people carried when they knew something they shouldn’t.

Cole’s expression hardened.

“Marcus.””

The man stopped.

“You remember me.””

“I remember you were supposed to be gone.””

My heart started racing.

Another secret.

Another person connected to Damien.

I looked at Cole.

“How many people were part of Damien’s life that I didn’t know about?””

Nobody answered.

Marcus looked at the coffin.

Then at me.

“You’re Elena.””

It wasn’t a question.

I stepped back.

“How do you know my name?””

Marcus swallowed.

“Because Damien talked about you.””

I almost laughed.

“Really?””

My voice was sharp.

“He talked about me while he was married to someone else?””

Mara looked away.

Marcus flinched.

“He talked about you more than anyone.””

That hurt worse than an insult.

Because I didn’t know whether it was supposed to comfort me.

Or destroy me.

Cole moved closer.

“You shouldn’t be here, Marcus.””

Marcus looked at him.

“Neither should she.””

He pointed at Mara.

The chapel became silent again.

Mara’s eyes narrowed.

“What does that mean?””

Marcus looked between us.

“It means Damien didn’t want either of you finding out this way.””

My hands curled into fists.

“Finding out what?””

Marcus hesitated.

Cole stepped forward.

“Leave.””

“No.””

“Marcus.””

“No.””

His voice cracked.

“I watched him disappear. I watched everyone believe the story they were given. And now you’re all standing here pretending this is about a marriage certificate.””

He looked at Damien’s coffin.

“It’s not.””

I felt a chill.

“Then what is it about?””

Marcus stared at me.

“The fact that Damien knew someone was coming for him.””

The words landed heavily.

Mara whispered:

“He told me he was scared.””

Marcus nodded.

“He was.””

I looked at Cole.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

Cole’s face tightened.

“Because I didn’t have proof.””

“You had suspicions.””

“Yes.””

“And you let me bury him anyway?””

Cole looked down.

For the first time, he looked ashamed.

“I thought keeping you safe meant keeping you away from the truth.””

I stepped closer.

“You don’t get to decide what I can handle.””

My voice echoed through the chapel.

“You don’t get to let me mourn a lie.””

Nobody spoke.

Then Marcus reached into his jacket.

My body immediately tensed.

Another document.

Another secret.

But he didn’t pull out paper.

He pulled out a small phone.

“Damien gave me this.””

Cole’s eyes widened.

“What?””

Marcus looked at him.

“He said if anything happened, I needed to give it to Elena.””

My breath stopped.

A phone.

A message.

Something Damien left behind.

Marcus walked toward me.

I stared at the device.

“Why didn’t you give it to me before?””

His expression broke.

“Because I didn’t know if you were safe.””

I looked around the chapel.

At Cole.

At Mara.

At Damien.

“Safe from who?””

Marcus didn’t answer.

That scared me more than if he had.

I reached for the phone.

The screen was locked.

“Password?””

Marcus looked at the coffin.

Then back at me.

“Damien said only you would know.””

My eyebrows pulled together.

“I don’t know any password.””

Marcus watched me carefully.

“He said you would.””

The phone felt heavier in my hand.

A thousand memories flashed through my mind.

Birthdays.

Anniversaries.

Private jokes.

Moments I thought belonged only to us.

Then something clicked.

A phrase Damien used to say whenever I asked him why he loved me.

Not a romantic answer.

A strange one.

A secret joke between us.

I typed it.

The screen unlocked.

Everyone stared.

Except Mara.

She looked like she already knew what was coming.

A single video file appeared.

No title.

No date.

Just one word.

“Elena.””

My finger hovered over it.

Nobody breathed.

Then the video started.

Damien’s face appeared on the screen.

Alive.

Not a memory.

Not a photograph.

Alive.

My knees nearly gave out.

“Elena,” his voice said.

I covered my mouth.

Because the man in the video looked directly at me.

Like he knew exactly where I would be standing.

“I’m sorry you’re seeing this.””

My eyes filled instantly.

Then Damien said the sentence that made my entire body go cold.

May you like

“If you’re watching this, it means the person who killed my identity already knows you found Mara.””

The video suddenly cut.
