Chapter 12: The House Full Of Lies

I stared at the message.

My own home.

The words felt heavier than everything else.

Because that was the one place I believed was real.

The house where Damien and I built our life.

The kitchen where we cooked together.

The bedroom where he whispered promises.

The living room where we laughed until midnight.

The idea that it held another secret made me feel sick.

“Who sent it?”” Damien asked.

I looked up.

“I don’t know.””

Cole stepped closer.

“Let me see.””

I pulled the phone away.

“No.””

The reaction surprised him.

And honestly, it surprised me too.

But I was tired of handing pieces of my life to people who kept breaking them.

“I need to think.””

Damien looked at me.

“Elena.””

“No.””

My voice softened.

“I need one minute where nobody tells me what to believe.””

Nobody argued.

For the first time all day…

nobody argued.

I looked at Damien.

Alive.

The man I loved.

The man who lied.

Then Cole.

The man who protected me.

The man who hid everything.

Then Mara’s face appeared in my mind.

The other woman.

The woman who might have been a victim too.

My entire world had become a puzzle where every piece cut my hands.

“We go home.””

Both men reacted.

“What?””

I looked at Damien.

“You heard me.””

“Elena, it’s not safe.””

I stared at him.

“You don’t get to say that.””

He went quiet.

“I’m going home.””

Cole frowned.

“Why?””

“Because someone sent me a message.””

I held up the phone.

“They want me to look there.””

Damien shook his head.

“That’s exactly what they want.””

“Yes.””

I looked at him.

“And I’m done letting everyone else decide where I go.””

The drive back was silent.

No one spoke.

Not even Damien.

That hurt more than anger.

When we arrived, I sat in the car for a moment.

The house looked exactly the same.

White curtains.

Front porch light.

The small garden Damien planted for me.

A normal home.

A beautiful lie.

I walked inside.

The silence was overwhelming.

Everything was untouched.

My shoes still by the door.

A photo of us on the shelf.

Damien’s favorite mug in the kitchen.

I looked at it.

Then I laughed quietly.

“You were alive.””

Damien stood behind me.

“Elena…”

“You walked through this house.””

He didn’t answer.

“You watched me sleep?””

His silence hurt.

“Did you come here after your funeral?””

Finally, he whispered:

“Yes.””

I closed my eyes.

The pain was almost too much.

“Why?””

“Because I missed you.””

I turned around.

“Don’t say that.””

His face broke.

“Because you don’t get to miss someone you abandoned.””

The words hurt both of us.

But they were true.

Then Cole’s phone rang.

He answered.

Listened.

His expression changed.

“What?””

Damien noticed.

“What happened?””

Cole looked at me.

“The police found something.””

My heart stopped.

“What?””

Cole lowered the phone.

“They searched the evidence connected to Damien’s accident.””

“And?””

He swallowed.

“The report was altered.””

Damien froze.

“By who?””

Cole looked at me.

“I don’t know.””

Nobody moved.

Then I noticed something.

A small scratch on the wooden floor near the hallway.

I frowned.

“What is that?””

Damien looked.

His face changed.

“Elena.””

“What?””

He walked closer.

“That wasn’t there before.””

I followed the mark.

It led toward the wall beside our bedroom.

A place I had walked past every day.

I touched the wall.

Something felt wrong.

A small section moved.

A hidden compartment.

My heart pounded.

Damien whispered:

“No.””

I looked at him.

“You knew?””

His face went pale.

“I knew there was a place hidden in this house.””

I stared.

“And you didn’t tell me?””

Before he could answer, the compartment opened.

Inside was a small box.

No lock.

No dust.

Like someone had opened it recently.

I reached inside.

A photograph.

A passport.

And a handwritten letter.

The photograph fell first.

I picked it up.

My breath stopped.

Because it showed me.

Not Damien.

Not Mara.

Me.

Standing beside someone I had trusted my entire life.

Someone who had been in my house.

Someone who had held my hand when I cried.

I looked at the letter.

May you like

The first line made my entire body go cold.

*“Elena, if you found this, it means I failed to protect you from your own family.””*
