Chapter 6: The Photograph That Changed Everything

The photo stayed on Mara’s screen.

Nobody touched it.

Nobody spoke.

The chapel suddenly felt too bright.

Too clean.

Too peaceful for the nightmare happening inside it.

I leaned closer.

My eyes moved over every detail.

Damien.

Alive.

Standing upright.

Wearing the same dark jacket he had worn the week before his “death.””

His expression was serious.

Not afraid.

Not confused.

Like he knew exactly what he was doing.

But that wasn’t the part that destroyed me.

It was the person standing next to him.

Attorney Cole.

I looked up slowly.

Cole’s face had gone completely blank.

That scared me more than anger would have.

“Explain.””

My voice was quiet.

Too quiet.

Cole didn’t answer.

“Explain.””

Mara stepped away from him.

“You knew?””

Cole looked at the photo.

Then at me.

“Elena…”

“No.””

I shook my head.

“No more excuses.””

My hands were trembling.

“No more secrets.””

Marcus moved closer.

“Cole, what did you do?””

Cole finally looked at us.

And for the first time since I met him, he looked afraid.

“I didn’t know this photo existed.””

“That’s not what I asked.””

I pointed at the screen.

“You were with him.””

Cole closed his eyes.

For a moment, nobody moved.

Then he said:

“Yes.””

The word felt like a slap.

Mara whispered:

“You knew he was alive.””

Cole immediately shook his head.

“Not like that.””

“What does that mean?””

“It means I knew Damien was planning something.””

I laughed bitterly.

“Planning something?””

I looked around the chapel.

“At his own funeral?””

Cole’s silence hurt.

Because silence was becoming his answer.

Marcus stepped forward.

“You promised him you would protect Elena.””

Cole looked at him.

“I did.””

“Then why didn’t you tell her?””

“Because Damien made me promise.””

I stared.

“Damien asked you to lie to me?””

Cole looked at me.

“Yes.””

The honesty was almost worse.

I felt tears burning my eyes.

“Why?””

Cole looked at the coffin.

“Because he believed you were the only person he could trust.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

My voice cracked.

“No, he doesn’t get to do that.””

The room blurred.

“He doesn’t get to betray me and call it protection.””

Mara looked down.

“I said the same thing.””

I turned toward her.

For once, we agreed.

Cole opened his mouth.

But before he could speak, Marcus interrupted.

“Where was the photo taken?””

Everyone looked at him.

Cole frowned.

“What?””

Marcus pointed.

“The background.””

I looked at the image again.

Behind Damien and Cole was a wall.

A plain white wall.

Nothing else.

But Marcus looked terrified.

“What is it?””

He didn’t answer.

“Marcus.””

His face tightened.

“That picture wasn’t taken recently.””

Cole stared at him.

“What are you saying?””

Marcus looked at Damien’s image.

“He sent me this photo six months ago.””

The room went silent.

I felt my heartbeat slow.

Six months.

That made no sense.

Damien was supposed to be dead for three weeks.

“Then why send it now?”” I asked.

Nobody had an answer.

Cole took a step back.

“He planned everything.””

The words hung there.

Mara shook her head.

“No.””

“Yes.””

Cole looked toward me.

“And that’s what scares me.””

I stared at him.

“What scares you?””

He looked at Damien.

“Damien wasn’t running from someone.””

A chill moved through me.

“He was preparing for someone.””

Before I could respond, the chapel lights flickered.

Again.

This time they stayed off for three seconds.

Three seconds of darkness.

Then they returned.

But something had changed.

The coffin.

The paper.

The phone.

Everything was still there.

Except the marriage certificate.

I looked at Cole.

“Where is it?””

His face changed.

“What?””

“The certificate.””

Everyone looked around.

It was gone.

Mara searched the floor.

“I had it.””

Marcus checked the chairs.

“No one left.””

My eyes moved slowly toward the chapel entrance.

The door was still locked.

Nobody had entered.

Nobody had left.

Then I noticed something.

A small white envelope sitting on Damien’s coffin.

It wasn’t there before.

My heart stopped.

I walked toward it.

“Elena, wait,” Cole said.

But I was already reaching for it.

My fingers touched the paper.

On the front was one name.

Mine.

*ELENA.*

I opened it.

Inside was a single sentence.

A sentence written in Damien’s handwriting.

My hands started shaking.

Because the message wasn’t an apology.

It wasn’t an explanation.

May you like

It was a warning.

*“The woman you trust most is the reason I had to disappear.””*
