Chapter 7: The Name Written In The Warning

I read the sentence again.

Then again.

My eyes moved over the handwriting, searching for anything that could make it less real.

A mistake.

A trick.

Anything.

But the handwriting was Damien’s.

The same slanted letters on birthday cards.

The same rushed signature on grocery lists.

The same handwriting that once covered our refrigerator with little notes saying, Don’t forget I love you.

Now those same hands had written a warning.

*The woman you trust most is the reason I had to disappear.*

My fingers went numb.

Slowly, I lowered the paper.

Nobody spoke.

They were all watching me.

Waiting.

Maybe they were afraid of what I would say.

Maybe they were afraid because they already knew.

I looked at Cole.

Then Mara.

Then Marcus.

The three people standing closest to the truth.

“Who?”” I asked.

My voice was barely above a whisper.

Nobody answered.

I held up the paper.

“Who is the woman?””

Cole looked away.

That tiny movement was enough.

My stomach twisted.

“You know.””

“Elena—”

“You know.””

Cole’s jaw tightened.

Mara looked at him.

“Tell her.””

Cole turned sharply.

“Mara.””

“No.””

Her voice was firm.

“You don’t get to protect people anymore.””

The words hung between us.

Cole stared at her.

Then at me.

“I don’t know if Damien wrote this exactly the way you think.””

I laughed quietly.

A broken sound.

“Of course.””

I shook my head.

“Even now.””

“Elena.””

“Even now you’re trying to make it softer.””

I stepped closer.

“He wrote that because he knew I would find it.””

Cole said nothing.

“Who did he mean?””

The silence stretched.

Then Marcus spoke.

“Before anyone answers, there’s something you need to understand.””

I looked at him.

“What?””

Marcus glanced toward the empty hallway.

“Damien didn’t trust anyone.””

“That’s not true.””

“You think you knew him.””

The sentence hurt.

But I didn’t look away.

Marcus continued.

“He was always watching. Always checking exits. Always changing passwords. He had a notebook where he wrote down names.””

“Names of who?””

Marcus hesitated.

“People he thought could betray him.””

My heart sank.

“And my name was on it?””

“No.””

The answer came quickly.

Too quickly.

I stared at him.

“Then whose was?””

Nobody answered.

Then the sound of footsteps came from outside the chapel.

All four of us turned.

A woman appeared in the doorway.

Older.

Elegant.

Wearing a dark coat.

Her eyes immediately found me.

“Elena.””

I froze.

I knew that voice.

Not well.

But enough.

I had heard it many times.

At family dinners.

At holidays.

On phone calls.

My husband’s mother.

Damien’s mother.

Vivian.

She walked into the chapel slowly.

Her face was calm.

Too calm.

“Mara,” she said.

Mara stiffened.

“You knew?””

Vivian looked at her.

“I knew everything.””

My chest tightened.

“What does that mean?””

Vivian ignored the question.

She looked at the coffin.

Then at me.

“You shouldn’t have opened that envelope.””

I felt cold.

“How do you know about the envelope?””

Nobody answered.

I looked around.

The realization hit me.

Someone had been watching.

Someone had been watching us the entire time.

Vivian stepped closer.

“Elena, you need to leave.””

I stared.

“Excuse me?””

“This is no longer about Damien.””

My eyes narrowed.

“It is my husband’s funeral.””

“No.””

Her voice softened.

“That’s the problem.””

She looked at the coffin.

“This stopped being a funeral the moment he planned it.””

The room went silent.

I felt my heartbeat in my ears.

“You knew he planned his own funeral?””

Vivian closed her eyes.

“I knew he was preparing for something.””

“Something?””

I stepped forward.

“Everyone keeps saying that word.””

My voice rose.

“Something. Things. Problems. Threats.””

I pointed toward Damien.

“Can anyone actually tell me what my husband was involved in?””

Vivian looked at me.

“Yes.””

The answer shocked me.

“Then tell me.””

She glanced at Cole.

He looked nervous.

Then she said:

“Damien discovered someone close to him was stealing from him.””

Mara frowned.

“Stealing?””

Vivian nodded.

“Money. Information. Secrets.””

My eyes moved between them.

“And he thought it was a woman.””

Vivian’s expression changed slightly.

Not surprise.

Fear.

“You read the note.””

I didn’t answer.

She looked at the paper in my hand.

Then whispered:

“Damien always knew the truth would hurt you.””

My grip tightened.

“Who is she?””

Vivian looked at me.

And for the first time…

I saw pity in her eyes.

“Elena…”

She paused.

“The woman he trusted most was not Mara.””

My breath caught.

Not Mara.

Then who?

Vivian looked directly at Cole.

And the entire room went silent.

Because I suddenly understood.

May you like

The person everyone was afraid to name…

was standing right in front of me.
