Chapter 11: The Man Who Was Never Supposed to Be Her Father
I didn't hear the rest of Arthur's explanation.
Not immediately.
The name Richard Hale kept repeating in my head.
Richard.
The man who had returned from nowhere.
The man who had helped Vanessa access the hospital records.
The man who had demanded half the estate.
The man who claimed he was only trying to recover what belonged to Catherine.
And according to the genetic comparison, he was biologically connected to Lily.
"Arthur," I said slowly, "are you telling me Richard is Lily's father?""
"No. I'm telling you the preliminary comparison establishes a genetic relationship. It does not establish paternity.""
"Then what does it establish?""
"Richard shares a specific genetic marker with Lily. The laboratory believes the result is consistent with him being a close paternal relative.""
I closed my eyes.
"How close?""
"Possibly a father, uncle, or half-brother, depending on the missing samples.""
Daniel took the phone from my hand and put it on speaker.
"Arthur, we need the complete report.""
"I understand. The laboratory is preparing it.""
"When?""
"Tomorrow morning.""
Daniel shook his head.
"We've waited long enough.""
Arthur's voice became firm.
"I know this is difficult, but we cannot confuse a genetic match with a definitive relationship. We need a properly documented test.""
I took the phone back.
"Send everything you have.""
"I will.""
The call ended.
For a while, Daniel and I stood in the wrecked study.
The police had taken Stephanie for questioning.
Vanessa had been transported separately.
The officers had photographed the documents and secured the blue envelope.
I looked at the damaged metal box.
"Why would Richard be Lily's father?""
Daniel rubbed his forehead.
"Maybe he wasn't. Maybe there's another explanation.""
I wanted to believe him.
But there was something else bothering me.
The original birth records.
The altered medical report.
The missing genetic test.
The sealed letter from my father.
Someone had spent eleven years preventing the truth from becoming known.
I called the hospital's compliance officer.
Karen answered.
"Mr. Hale, we've been expecting your call.""
"I need to know whether the original neonatal records are intact.""
"We've located the archived file. It's being preserved.""
"Was Richard Hale ever listed as a potential biological parent?""
Karen paused.
"Not in the original admission record.""
"What about later?""
"His name appears in an amended family history submitted eleven years ago.""
"Who submitted it?""
"Vanessa Hale.""
I closed my eyes.
"Did she provide supporting documentation?""
"Yes. A signed declaration.""
"By whom?""
Karen checked.
Then she said, "Richard Hale.""
I felt the room close around me.
"Can you send me a copy?""
"We'll need to follow the formal release process.""
"Please begin.""
After the call, Daniel drove me back to my mother's house.
Lily was sitting on the living room rug, arranging colored pencils into little piles.
When she saw me, she smiled.
"Dad!""
I knelt and hugged her.
"Hey, sweetheart.""
"Did you get my backpack?""
I smiled.
"Not yet. But we'll get it.""
She studied my face.
"Are you okay?""
I brushed her cheek.
"Just tired.""
She considered that answer.
Then she pointed toward my head.
"Your hair is growing.""
I laughed.
"Very slowly.""
"Maybe you should keep it bald.""
"Why?""
"Because now we match.""
My throat tightened.
I held her a little longer.
Later that evening, after Lily went to bed, my mother brought me a photograph album.
"I think you should see this.""
She opened it to a page from 1995.
There was a family gathering at Grandpa's house.
My father stood beside Richard.
Catherine sat in a chair near the fireplace.
And in the background was a young woman I didn't recognize.
"Who is she?""
My mother touched the photograph.
"Margaret.""
I looked at her.
"Grandpa's secretary?""
She nodded.
"She worked for him for nearly twenty years.""
"What does she have to do with this?""
My mother turned the page.
Another photograph showed Margaret holding a newborn baby.
On the back was a handwritten date.
Three months before Catherine died.
I looked at my mother.
"Was that Vanessa?""
She nodded.
"Yes.""
"Why was Margaret holding her?""
"Because Catherine was in the hospital.""
I stared at the picture.
Then I noticed a small detail.
Margaret was wearing a hospital identification badge.
Her name was printed clearly.
Margaret Bell.
Arthur's mother.
I called him immediately.
He answered after several rings.
"Marcus?""
"I found a photograph of your mother holding Vanessa as a baby.""
Silence.
Then Arthur sighed.
"I wondered when you would find that.""
"Did your mother know Catherine?""
"Very well.""
"Did she know who Vanessa's father was?""
Arthur took a long breath.
"Yes.""
"Who?""
"Your grandfather.""
I closed my eyes.
"Why did nobody tell us?""
"Because Catherine asked your grandmother to keep the truth hidden.""
"Why?""
Arthur hesitated.
"Because your grandfather was married. Because the family company was already under financial pressure. And because Catherine feared that revealing the truth would make Vanessa a bargaining chip in an inheritance dispute.""
I looked at the photograph.
"Was Richard involved?""
"Yes.""
"How?""
"Richard had been helping Catherine financially. He claimed he was the father because he wanted control over the estate.""
"Did Catherine agree?""
"No.""
Arthur continued.
"She told my mother that Richard was threatening to expose the affair unless your grandfather gave him a substantial amount of money.""
I sat down.
"Then Richard isn't Lily's father.""
"Not necessarily.""
"What do you mean?""
Arthur lowered his voice.
"There is something else in the original file.""
I waited.
"The genetic sample labeled Richard Hale was not collected from Richard recently. It was submitted eleven years ago.""
"By whom?""
"Your wife.""
My stomach tightened.
"Why?""
"She told the hospital that Richard was a close relative who wanted to help establish Lily's hereditary risk.""
"Did he consent?""
"Apparently.""
I rubbed my forehead.
"Then why does the test show a possible paternal relationship?""
"Because Richard and your grandfather may have shared a genetic anomaly. We need the complete family comparison.""
I thought about Grandpa.
The man who had raised me.
The man who had hidden Catherine's pregnancy.
The man who had protected Vanessa's inheritance.
The man who had written that Lily's trust must never be touched.
"Arthur, is there any chance Lily is biologically connected to my grandfather?""
"Yes.""
"Through me?""
Arthur went silent.
Then he said something I wasn't prepared to hear.
"Marcus, your grandfather may not have been your biological grandfather.""
I stood.
"What?""
"Your father discovered something in 1998. It may explain why he was so determined to keep Richard away.""
I looked toward the staircase where Lily was sleeping.
"Who was my biological grandfather?""
Arthur took a breath.
"We believe it was Richard's father, not your grandfather.""
I couldn't speak.
That would mean the family tree was different from everything we had been told.
And it might explain why Vanessa's family had been so determined to reclaim the estate.
But Arthur wasn't finished.
"There is another result.""
"What?""
"The laboratory found a genetic match between Lily and your father, Robert.""
I frowned.
"You just told me he wasn't her father.""
"He's not. But the result shows a close family connection.""
"How close?""
Arthur paused.
"Consistent with a paternal grandfather.""
I sat down slowly.
My father had died twelve years before Lily was born.
And yet the genetic evidence suggested he was her grandfather.
Which meant I was almost certainly her biological father.
But that raised another question.
Why had Vanessa tried so hard to hide the result?
Then Arthur said:
"Marcus, your father left a second sample before he died. It was collected for an insurance investigation. Someone accessed it eleven years ago.""
May you like
"Who?""
"Vanessa.""
