Chapter 7: The Dead Man in the Hospital Footage
For almost a full minute, neither Daniel nor I spoke.
The man on the laptop looked exactly like our father.
The same narrow shoulders. The same silver hair combed away from his forehead. The same slight limp in his left leg.
Even the way he held his right hand against his coat was familiar.
But our father had been dead for twelve years.
I leaned closer to the screen.
"Play it again.""
Daniel rewound the footage.
The man approached the reception desk, removed something from his coat, and handed it to the receptionist.
She examined the document, nodded, and pointed toward the administrative corridor.
Then Vanessa appeared.
She smiled at him.
Not a polite smile.
A familiar one.
She touched his arm, leaned toward him, and said something that the camera couldn't capture.
The man laughed.
I felt my stomach turn.
"That's Dad," Daniel whispered.
"Don't say that.""
"Marcus, look at his face.""
"I can see it.""
"Then what are you telling me?""
I pushed away from the table.
"I buried our father. I watched them lower his coffin into the ground.""
Daniel closed the laptop.
"Maybe it was someone who looked like him.""
"Then we find out who.""
I called the hospital's security department and requested the original footage, including the reception desk's identification records.
The security manager, a man named Robert, agreed to preserve everything.
When I asked about the man's visitor identification, Robert hesitated.
"Mr. Hale, there's something unusual.""
"What?""
"The visitor was registered under the name Richard Hale.""
My father's name.
I gripped the phone.
"Who provided the identification?""
"Your wife.""
"Vanessa?""
"Yes. She told reception that he was a family representative authorized to collect documents.""
"What documents?""
Robert checked his notes.
"Historical medical and estate records.""
I looked at Daniel.
"Which records?""
Robert continued.
"The request included a reference to Catherine Hale.""
The name from Grandpa's letter.
Vanessa's biological mother.
I thanked him and ended the call.
Daniel was already searching through the family archives on his laptop.
"Wait.""
He turned the screen toward me.
A photograph appeared.
It showed our father standing beside a man at a charity event in 1997.
The second man looked nearly identical.
I recognized him immediately.
"Uncle Richard.""
Daniel nodded.
Richard Hale had been our father's older brother.
He had disappeared from the family after a bitter inheritance dispute in the late nineties. I had been young, but I remembered the arguments.
Grandpa had accused Richard of stealing company documents.
Dad had refused to speak to him.
Eventually, Richard moved overseas.
We were told he had died several years later.
But there had never been a funeral.
No body had been returned.
No official death certificate had ever been shown to us.
"That's not Dad," Daniel said quietly.
"It's Richard.""
I stared at the footage again.
The resemblance was extraordinary.
But there was another problem.
Why had Richard returned?
And why was Vanessa helping him?
My phone rang.
The hospital security manager was calling back.
"Mr. Hale, we reviewed the visitor's identification.""
"Who was he?""
"His identification card was issued to Richard Hale.""
"Was it legitimate?""
"We're checking that now. However, we found another record.""
"What record?""
"The visitor requested access to a restricted archive containing records from 1998.""
I sat down.
"What was in those records?""
"An incident report involving a newborn patient and a disputed family transfer.""
I closed my eyes.
Vanessa's birth.
Catherine's death.
Grandpa's secret.
Everything pointed toward the same year.
"Can you send me the incident report?""
"Only through the proper legal channels. But I can tell you that the original file was accessed twice in the last month.""
"By whom?""
"First by Rebecca Mills. Then by an external account registered to a company called VSC Holdings.""
I ended the call.
Daniel rubbed his face.
"Marcus, I think Vanessa knew exactly what she was doing when she married you.""
I didn't respond.
Because the thought had already entered my mind.
What if she hadn't married me for love?
What if I had been a way back into a family she believed owed her something?
At that moment, my mother entered the kitchen.
She was carrying an old cardboard box.
"I heard you found someone in the hospital footage.""
I looked at her.
"Mom, do you recognize Richard?""
She went pale.
"Richard?""
"Uncle Richard.""
She placed the box on the table.
"He's alive?""
"We don't know.""
My mother slowly sat down.
Then she opened the box.
Inside were old photographs, letters, and several newspaper clippings.
She picked up one photograph and handed it to me.
It showed my father and Richard standing outside Grandpa's factory.
On the back, someone had written:
*Brothers. Before everything changed. 1998.*
My mother touched the photograph.
"Your father never wanted Richard near this family again.""
"Why?""
She looked at me.
"Because Richard tried to take Vanessa.""
I frowned.
"What do you mean?""
"After Catherine died, Richard claimed he was Vanessa's biological father. He wanted custody. Your grandfather refused.""
Daniel leaned forward.
"Was he actually her father?""
My mother shook her head.
"I don't know. Your grandfather always said Catherine had never told anyone who the father was.""
"Then why did Richard claim it?""
"Because he believed Vanessa was entitled to Catherine's inheritance.""
I stared at her.
"What inheritance?""
My mother opened another envelope.
Inside was a document showing that Catherine had owned shares in the family's manufacturing company.
The shares had been transferred into a protected estate before her death.
The beneficiary was Vanessa.
But there was a condition.
She would receive control of the shares only after turning thirty-five, provided she had not attempted to obtain them through fraudulent means.
Vanessa was thirty-four.
I looked at the date.
Her birthday was in four months.
Daniel whispered, "That's why she wanted the trust.""
I nodded slowly.
"She needed money before she became eligible for the inheritance.""
My mother shook her head.
"Marcus, there is something else you should know.""
She took another photograph from the box.
It showed Richard holding a baby.
Vanessa.
Standing behind him was Catherine.
But Catherine wasn't looking at the camera.
She was staring directly at Richard.
On the back, my grandfather had written:
*The truth about Vanessa's father must never be decided by money.*
I looked at my mother.
"Did Grandpa know who her father was?""
She nodded slowly.
"He found out shortly before Catherine died.""
"Who was it?""
My mother opened her mouth.
Before she could answer, the doorbell rang.
Daniel went to the front entrance.
A moment later, he returned holding a small envelope.
"Someone left this outside.""
There was no return address.
Only my name.
Inside was a single photograph.
It showed Vanessa standing beside Richard outside the hospital.
But the photograph had been taken much earlier.
The date printed on the back was twelve years ago.
The same month our father died.
Beneath it was a handwritten sentence.
*Richard didn't disappear. Your father paid him to stay away.*
May you like
And beneath that was another line.
*Ask your mother what happened the night your father died.*
