Chapter 12: The Test Result Vanessa Tried to Erase

The following morning, I went straight to the hospital.

I hadn't slept.

Neither had Daniel.

We arrived at 8:15 a.m., carrying the original documents Arthur had sent overnight.

Dr. Shaw was waiting in the conference room.

She stood when we entered.

"Marcus, I'm glad you came.""

I placed the documents on the table.

"I need the truth about Lily's birth.""

Dr. Shaw looked at the papers.

Then she closed the door.

"I was hoping we could discuss this without making assumptions.""

"Then answer my questions.""

She nodded.

"Eleven years ago, I was working in neonatal medicine. I remember Vanessa.""

"Did you deliver Lily?""

"Yes.""

I stared at her.

"You told me you first met Lily during chemotherapy.""

"I did. I wasn't comfortable discussing the earlier records because the original investigation was sealed.""

"Why?""

Dr. Shaw folded her hands.

"Because the genetic testing involved several family members, and there were concerns about unauthorized access to confidential information.""

"Was Lily's biological father ever in doubt?""

Dr. Shaw looked directly at me.

"No.""

I exhaled.

"Then why was the test altered?""

"Because Vanessa requested that the genetic section be removed from the discharge summary.""

"Why?""

"She said she was afraid the information would cause a family dispute.""

I stared at her.

"Did you agree?""

"No. I refused. But someone later accessed the record through an administrative account and replaced the final summary.""

"Rebecca Mills?""

Dr. Shaw nodded.

"That is what the audit suggests.""

Daniel opened his laptop.

"Do you have the original report?""

Dr. Shaw removed a folder from a locked cabinet.

"I kept a copy.""

She placed it on the table.

My hands trembled as I opened it.

The report showed Lily's genetic screening results.

There were two sections.

The first identified a hereditary blood disorder that required ongoing monitoring.

The second contained a family comparison.

Lily's sample matched my father's archived profile.

The result was consistent with the paternal family line.

I looked at Dr. Shaw.

"So Lily is my daughter.""

"Yes, Marcus. Nothing in this report suggests otherwise.""

I felt a wave of relief so powerful that I had to close my eyes.

Then I looked at the next page.

A handwritten note had been added.

*Potential inheritance implications — refer to estate counsel.*

I frowned.

"Why would a medical report mention inheritance?""

Dr. Shaw sighed.

"Because Vanessa brought legal documents to the hospital shortly after Lily was born. She asked whether Lily's genetic condition could affect her eligibility under the family estate.""

I looked up.

"She was already thinking about the inheritance?""

"Yes.""

Daniel leaned forward.

"Did she say anything about the trust?""

Dr. Shaw nodded.

"She asked whether Lily's diagnosis could be considered evidence that the child was part of a specific hereditary family line.""

I felt my stomach tighten.

"Why would that matter?""

"Because the estate documents contained a provision connected to Catherine's descendants.""

I sat back.

Everything had started with Catherine.

The secret pregnancy.

The disputed inheritance.

The protected trust.

And now Lily's medical records had become a weapon in a financial battle.

I turned another page.

There was a signature at the bottom.

Vanessa's.

Beneath it was a statement.

*I acknowledge that the genetic findings may affect the beneficiary status of the child and request that the original results remain confidential pending legal review.*

I read it twice.

Then I looked at Dr. Shaw.

"Did you know Vanessa had been trying to move the money?""

"No.""

"Did she ever discuss the trust with you?""

"She asked me once whether Lily's treatment could be classified as completed if her blood markers improved.""

My chest tightened.

"When?""

"About three weeks ago.""

The same period when the transfer documents were being prepared.

"Why would she ask that?""

Dr. Shaw looked uncomfortable.

"She said she was dealing with a complicated family estate matter.""

Daniel shook his head.

"She wanted a medical declaration that Lily no longer needed treatment.""

Dr. Shaw nodded.

"I refused.""

I looked down at the report.

"Then why does the fraudulent document have your name?""

"Someone copied my digital signature.""

I rubbed my face.

"How serious is Lily's condition?""

Dr. Shaw's expression softened.

"She has made progress, but she still needs monitoring. The fact that she is responding to treatment is encouraging. It does not mean she no longer requires care.""

I nodded.

"Thank you for telling me.""

Before we left, Dr. Shaw handed me a sealed envelope.

"This was found in the old neonatal archive. It was addressed to you, but it was never delivered.""

I stared at my name.

"Who wrote it?""

"Your father.""

I opened it carefully.

Inside was a short letter.

*Marcus,*

*If Lily is ever tested, please remember that her medical history does not determine her worth. Whatever the results reveal, she is your daughter in every way that matters.*

I stopped reading.

The final sentence was underlined.

*And if Vanessa ever tries to make you choose between the truth and your child, choose your child.*

I folded the letter.

My father had known.

He had known that Vanessa might one day use Lily's medical history against her.

And he had left me a warning.

When Daniel and I returned to the car, my phone rang.

Arthur.

"Marcus, we have the final laboratory report.""

I sat down.

"Tell me.""

"The genetic relationship is confirmed. Lily is your biological daughter.""

I closed my eyes.

"Thank God.""

"But there's another finding.""

My relief disappeared.

"What?""

"The report also confirms that Vanessa and Lily share a genetic connection through Catherine's line.""

"That's expected, isn't it? Vanessa is her mother.""

"Yes. But the original inheritance condition is more specific than we thought.""

Arthur paused.

"Your grandfather's estate includes a separate provision for descendants of Catherine who inherit the blood disorder. Lily qualifies.""

I stared through the windshield.

"Meaning?""

"Meaning Lily is entitled to a separate protected inheritance that Vanessa has no authority to access.""

I frowned.

"How much?""

Arthur gave me the figure.

"Approximately $620,000, including accrued investment returns.""

I couldn't speak.

The money had been held separately from the medical trust.

Grandpa had created another fund.

One that Vanessa hadn't managed to access.

"Why didn't we know about this?""

"Because the fund was sealed under a separate estate instruction. It could only be disclosed once the hereditary condition was confirmed.""

I looked at Daniel.

He mouthed the number.

Six hundred and twenty thousand.

Arthur continued.

"There's one more problem. Someone submitted a claim against that inheritance yesterday.""

"Who?""

"Vanessa Hale.""

I felt my stomach drop.

"How?""

"She claimed that Lily had permanently relinquished her beneficiary rights.""

"That's impossible. Lily is eleven.""

"Exactly. The claim is fraudulent.""

I leaned forward.

"Freeze the fund.""

"We already have.""

"Who signed the relinquishment?""

Arthur took a breath.

"An independent witness.""

"Who?""

"Your grandfather's former attorney.""

I frowned.

"Gerald Morris?""

"No.""

Arthur lowered his voice.

"Your father, Robert Hale.""

I went completely still.

"My father is dead.""

"I know.""

"Then how could he have signed it?""

Arthur didn't answer immediately.

Instead, he sent me a scanned copy.

I opened it.

The signature looked authentic.

The date was twelve years old.

And beneath my father's signature was a witness statement.

*I confirm that the beneficiary has voluntarily surrendered all future claims to the Catherine Hale hereditary inheritance.*

But the document contained something even more disturbing.

A fingerprint.

A fingerprint belonging to a child.

Lily's name appeared beside it.

I stared at the screen.

"She was a newborn.""

Daniel whispered, "They used her birth records.""

Arthur spoke again.

"Marcus, we have reason to believe this document was prepared before Lily was born and signed using a hospital authorization that should never have existed.""

My hands began shaking.

"Who authorized it?""

Arthur answered quietly.

"Your grandfather.""

I looked toward the hospital entrance.

My father had left a warning.

My grandfather had hidden the inheritance.

Vanessa had tried to steal it.

And someone had used my newborn daughter's identity to surrender money she hadn't even known existed.

Then my phone buzzed.

A message arrived from an unknown number.

It contained a photograph of a document with my grandfather's signature.

Beneath it was a sentence.

*You think Vanessa is the villain because she stole the money. But she was only following the instructions your grandfather left behind.*

Another message appeared.

*Ask Arthur who received the first payment from Lily's inheritance.*

I called Arthur immediately.

He answered.

"Marcus?""

"Who received the first payment?""

There was a long silence.

Then Arthur said:

"Your grandfather.""

I gripped the steering wheel.

"Why would he receive Lily's money?""

Arthur's voice dropped.

"Because the original trust was never created to protect Lily from the outside world.""

May you like

He paused.

"It was created to protect her from the Hale family itself.""
