Chapter 9: The Blue Envelope

The drive to the lake house took fifty-three minutes.

Not one of us spoke.

My mother sat in the back seat, holding the old photographs against her chest. Daniel drove. I watched the road, gripping my phone so tightly that my fingers began to hurt.

Vanessa's final message remained on the screen.

*It contains the truth about Lily's birth.*

I had read it so many times that the words no longer looked real.

When Lily was born, Vanessa had held her against her chest and cried.

I remembered the hospital room.

The nurse placing our daughter in my arms.

Vanessa whispering that Lily had my eyes.

I remembered calling my father from the hospital.

He had cried.

He had told me that Grandpa would have been proud.

Was any of it true?

"Marcus," Daniel said.

I looked up.

"We're here.""

The lake house stood at the end of a narrow gravel road.

The front gate was open.

A dark SUV was parked beside the garage.

I recognized it.

Vanessa's vehicle.

Daniel stopped the car.

"Wait for the police.""

I looked toward the house.

A light was on upstairs.

Then a shadow moved behind the curtains.

"She's inside.""

"Marcus, don't.""

I opened the door.

Daniel followed.

We approached the entrance carefully.

The front door was unlocked.

Inside, the living room had been turned upside down.

Drawers were open.

Books lay scattered across the floor.

A framed photograph of my grandfather had been knocked from the mantel.

Someone had searched the house thoroughly.

"Mom," I whispered.

"Stay outside.""

She nodded.

Daniel and I moved through the hallway.

Then we heard voices.

Vanessa.

And Stephanie.

They were in my grandfather's old study.

"Where did you put it?"" Stephanie demanded.

"I told you, I don't know.""

"Don't lie to me.""

"I'm not lying!""

Stephanie struck something against the desk.

"Richard said it was here.""

Vanessa's voice became desperate.

"Richard says a lot of things.""

I stepped into the doorway.

"Looking for something?""

Both women turned.

Vanessa went pale.

Stephanie dropped the folder in her hand.

For a moment, nobody moved.

Then Vanessa recovered.

"Marcus.""

I looked at the desk.

A metal box had been forced open.

Inside were several old documents.

One of them was a blue envelope.

My eyes locked onto it.

Vanessa followed my gaze.

"Don't touch that.""

I walked toward the desk.

"Why?""

"Because you don't understand what's inside.""

"Then explain it.""

Stephanie stepped forward.

"This is a private family matter.""

I turned toward her.

"You stole money from my daughter's medical fund. You accessed her medical records. You forged my signature. And now you're standing in my mother's house searching through documents you have no right to touch.""

Stephanie crossed her arms.

"You're making accusations you can't prove.""

Daniel entered behind me.

"We have the bank records, the hospital access logs, and the transfer authorizations.""

Stephanie's expression changed.

Vanessa looked at me.

"Marcus, please. Just listen.""

I picked up the blue envelope.

Her face crumpled.

"Don't open it.""

"Why?""

"Because it will hurt Lily.""

I stopped.

"Don't use my daughter to protect yourself.""

Vanessa took a step closer.

"I am trying to protect her.""

I looked at her.

"You tore her wig off in front of a ballroom full of people.""

"I was upset.""

"You stole her medical money.""

"I was trying to fix something.""

"You lied about her medical condition.""

Vanessa's eyes filled.

"There's something you don't know.""

"Then tell me.""

She glanced toward Stephanie.

Stephanie shook her head almost imperceptibly.

That small movement told me more than Vanessa's tears ever could.

"What's in the envelope?"" I asked.

Vanessa whispered, "A birth record.""

I opened it.

Inside were three documents.

The first was Lily's original birth certificate.

Nothing unusual.

The second was a hospital discharge summary.

The third was a letter dated eleven years earlier.

I unfolded it.

The handwriting was my father's.

My father had written it three months before Lily was born.

*To Marcus,*

*If you're reading this, something has happened that I was unable to explain while I was alive. There is a possibility that the child Vanessa is carrying is not yours. I have no proof, but Catherine's medical records suggest that a hereditary condition may have been passed through the family.*

I stopped reading.

Daniel leaned over my shoulder.

"What does that mean?""

I continued.

*If the child is born with the condition, do not allow anyone to use her medical needs as a reason to reopen the inheritance dispute. The child deserves protection, regardless of whose blood she carries.*

My hands trembled.

I looked at Vanessa.

"What is this?""

She began crying.

"I didn't want you to find it like this.""

"Is Lily my daughter?""

Vanessa covered her mouth.

"Marcus—"

"Answer me!""

Stephanie stepped between us.

"Don't speak to her like that.""

I turned toward Stephanie.

"Stay out of this.""

Vanessa finally spoke.

"Lily is your daughter.""

"Then why did Dad write this?""

"Because he was suspicious.""

"Suspicious of what?""

She looked at the letter.

Then she said something I never expected.

"Your father knew Catherine had a genetic condition. He believed it might affect Lily.""

I frowned.

"What condition?""

Vanessa looked down.

"A rare blood disorder.""

I felt my chest tighten.

"Lily doesn't have a blood disorder.""

"She was tested when she was born.""

"Why?""

"Because of the family history.""

I stared at her.

"Who ordered the test?""

"Your father.""

I shook my head.

"My father died before Lily was born.""

Vanessa's eyes widened.

Then she realized what she had said.

Daniel stepped forward.

"Marcus, look at the date.""

I examined the discharge summary.

The test had been ordered eleven years earlier.

The signature belonged to Dr. Evelyn Shaw.

But Dr. Shaw hadn't been Lily's doctor until years later.

Something was wrong.

I looked at Vanessa.

"Who was Dr. Shaw eleven years ago?""

Vanessa wiped her tears.

"She was working in the hospital's neonatal department.""

"How did she know my father?""

Vanessa didn't answer.

Then Stephanie spoke.

"Because she was the doctor who delivered Lily.""

I stared at her.

"That's impossible. Dr. Shaw told me she first met Lily during chemotherapy.""

"She was lying," Stephanie replied.

Vanessa turned sharply.

"Stephanie, stop!""

But Stephanie had already begun.

"Your wife didn't steal the money because she thought Lily was dying. She stole it because she believed the trust would become hers if Lily's medical history was changed.""

I felt sick.

"Why?""

Stephanie looked at the blue envelope.

"Because Lily's birth records contain a second identity.""

I opened the discharge summary again.

There was a handwritten notation at the bottom.

*Patient: Lily Hale. Biological mother: Vanessa Hale. Biological father: Pending confirmation.*

My throat tightened.

"What does pending confirmation mean?""

Vanessa stepped toward me.

"Marcus, please put the papers down.""

I looked at her.

"Did you have a DNA test?""

She nodded.

"When?""

"Before Lily was born.""

"With whom?""

Vanessa began sobbing.

Stephanie grabbed her arm.

"Don't tell him.""

I pulled the papers closer.

"Who is Lily's biological father?""

Nobody answered.

Then my phone rang.

It was Arthur Bell.

I answered.

"Arthur?""

His voice was urgent.

"Marcus, listen carefully. We've just received the original medical records from the hospital archive.""

"What records?""

"The complete genetic screening report.""

"And?""

There was a long pause.

Then Arthur said:

"Your grandfather wasn't only hiding Vanessa's parentage. He was hiding something about Lily, too.""

I looked at the woman standing across the desk.

Vanessa had gone completely still.

Arthur continued.

"The report identifies a second potential biological father. And the name is someone who has been dead for twelve years.""

I felt my knees weaken.

"Who?""

Arthur answered.

"Your father, Robert Hale.""

I stared at Vanessa.

She shook her head desperately.

"No. Marcus, that's not what happened.""

But Arthur wasn't finished.

"There's another finding. The hospital's original report was altered after Lily's birth. The genetic test was never completed, and the signature authorizing the change belongs to...""

He stopped.

"To whom?"" I demanded.

Arthur lowered his voice.

"Your wife, Marcus.""

Vanessa took one step backward.

Then another.

And for the first time since I had known her, she looked genuinely terrified.

Not because I had discovered the money.

Not because I had found the forged documents.

May you like

But because I was finally asking the one question she had spent eleven years making sure nobody ever asked.

*Who was Lily's father?*
