Chapter 14: The Last Lie in the Family
For a moment, I couldn't speak.
My mother had signed a document giving Richard Hale a legal claim over Lily's guardianship?
"Why?"" I finally asked.
Eleanor's hands trembled.
"Your grandfather told me it was temporary. He said Richard would serve as an emergency family guardian if anything happened to you or Vanessa.""
"Why would Richard be chosen?""
"Because he was connected to Catherine's estate.""
"He's not even Lily's father.""
"I know that now.""
"Mom, what did you know then?""
She looked at me with exhausted eyes.
"I knew there were secrets. I knew your grandfather had made terrible mistakes. But I didn't know how far they went.""
Daniel pulled out a chair.
"Start from the beginning.""
Eleanor took a shaky breath.
"Eleven years ago, your grandfather called me to his office. Vanessa had just given birth. Lily was having medical complications, and the doctors were concerned about a hereditary blood disorder.""
I sat opposite her.
"Go on.""
"He told me that Catherine's estate could become involved if Lily's condition was confirmed. He said Richard was threatening to challenge the family arrangements. Your grandfather wanted a legal safeguard in case you and Vanessa were unable to care for Lily.""
"Why didn't he ask me?""
"Because he believed you would refuse.""
"Of course I would have!""
"I know.""
Her voice broke.
"He said the document would never be used unless there was an emergency. He asked me to sign as a family witness.""
I stared at her.
"Did you read it?""
She nodded.
"It was several pages. I didn't understand all the legal language. I trusted your grandfather.""
Daniel looked furious.
"That's not an excuse.""
"I know.""
Eleanor reached into a drawer and removed a small envelope.
"I kept this because I never felt right about it.""
Inside was a photocopy of the guardianship agreement.
My eyes went straight to the final page.
The document did not merely name Richard as an emergency guardian.
It gave him authority to petition for temporary custody if either parent was accused of financial misconduct, medical neglect, or fraudulent conduct involving Lily's inheritance.
I looked at my mother.
"Vanessa knew about this?""
Eleanor nodded.
"Your grandfather told her.""
"And Richard?""
"He was supposed to destroy the agreement after the trust was finalized.""
I looked at the signature.
My mother's.
Then I noticed the witness signature.
Gerald Morris.
The same dead attorney whose signature had been forged on the inheritance documents.
"Mom, did Gerald actually witness this?""
"No. He wasn't there.""
My jaw tightened.
"Then why is his name on it?""
Eleanor shook her head.
"Your grandfather said the paperwork had to be completed properly. He promised to have Gerald review it later.""
Daniel stood.
"So the agreement was never legally valid.""
Arthur's voice came from the doorway.
"No. It may be even worse than that.""
We turned.
He had arrived with two police officers.
Arthur took the document and examined it.
"The witness signature is forged. The notarial stamp is also inconsistent with the records from that year.""
He looked at me.
"Richard has been using this agreement to threaten Vanessa. He convinced her that he could take Lily away if she refused to cooperate.""
I felt anger rise in my chest.
"That's why she followed him?""
"Partly. She believed he had the power to destroy her family.""
"She destroyed it herself.""
Arthur didn't argue.
One of the officers approached.
"Mr. Hale, we have located Richard's vehicle near the old Hale property. We believe he may be preparing to leave the area.""
I looked at Daniel.
"The lake house.""
He nodded.
We gave the officers the location of the original study and the documents Richard had been searching for.
Then Arthur received a call.
He listened for several seconds before looking at me.
"Vanessa wants to speak with you.""
I hesitated.
"Why?""
"She says she knows where Richard is going.""
I looked at Eleanor.
"Put her through.""
Arthur handed me the phone.
Vanessa's voice was barely audible.
"Marcus?""
"What do you want?""
"I know you're angry.""
"That's an understatement.""
"I need you to listen.""
"You've had eleven years to tell me the truth.""
"I know.""
"Why did you steal Lily's money?""
She began crying.
"Richard told me the inheritance would be released once the medical declaration was changed. He said he would use the money to settle the estate dispute and leave us alone.""
"You believed him.""
"I wanted to believe him.""
"You had your daughter in a hospital bed, Vanessa. You knew she needed treatment.""
"I know.""
"Then how could you?""
She didn't answer.
I waited.
Finally, she whispered, "Because I was afraid.""
"Of Richard?""
"Of him, of the family, of what would happen if the truth came out.""
I looked at the floor.
"Tell me where he is.""
"The lake house. He's looking for the original inheritance deed.""
"Why?""
"Because it contains a clause that proves he received a settlement. If he destroys it, he can claim the estate was never settled.""
I turned to Arthur.
He nodded.
"Is there anything else?"" I asked.
Vanessa hesitated.
"Yes.""
"What?""
"Richard has another document. One that your grandfather never wanted anyone to find.""
"What document?""
"The original letter from Catherine.""
My chest tightened.
"Where is it?""
"Inside the wall behind the fireplace.""
I closed my eyes.
"Why didn't you tell me before?""
"Because I thought it would make everything worse.""
"It already is worse.""
She began sobbing.
"Marcus, I never wanted Lily to suffer.""
I remembered the wedding reception.
The wig hitting the floor.
My daughter's hands shaking.
The hundreds of people watching.
"Then you should have protected her.""
"I know.""
I ended the call.
The officers prepared to leave for the lake house.
I followed them.
Daniel grabbed my arm.
"You're not going alone.""
"I'm not.""
Arthur stepped forward.
"I'll come too. I know exactly what we're looking for.""
The drive was silent.
Rain had started again, washing the road in silver streaks.
When we arrived, Richard's car was parked beside the house.
The front door stood open.
Inside, drawers had been emptied and papers scattered across the floor.
We heard movement near the study.
The officers entered first.
"Police! Hands where we can see them!""
Richard emerged from behind the desk.
He looked older than I remembered.
His expression was almost amused.
"Marcus.""
I stared at him.
"Where's Catherine's letter?""
He smiled.
"Straight to business.""
"Give it to us.""
Richard glanced toward the fireplace.
"You don't understand what that letter says.""
"Then explain it.""
He laughed quietly.
"Your grandfather spent his life pretending he could control every consequence of his actions. Catherine knew the truth. She knew Vanessa was his daughter.
She knew he had lied about the inheritance. And she knew the family would eventually turn against her child.""
"Then why did she leave Vanessa with him?""
"Because she was dying. She had nowhere else to turn.""
Richard reached into his jacket.
The officers raised their weapons.
"Don't move!""
He slowly withdrew a folded document.
"The original settlement," he said.
"Your grandfather paid me to keep quiet.""
Arthur stepped forward.
"Then you've just admitted to violating the confidentiality agreement.""
Richard smiled.
"I've admitted nothing.""
He tossed the document onto the desk.
Then he looked at me.
"Do you know why your grandfather chose you to raise Lily?""
"Because I was her father.""
"No.""
The word landed like a slap.
Richard leaned closer.
"Because he believed you would never question the family.""
I stared at him.
"What are you talking about?""
Richard's smile disappeared.
"Your grandfather didn't just hide Catherine's affair. He hid the truth about your own birth.""
Arthur moved toward the fireplace.
"Marcus, don't listen to him.""
But Richard continued.
"Your father, Robert, wasn't the man your family claimed he was. And the woman who raised you isn't the only person who knew.""
He looked at Eleanor, who had entered behind us with Daniel.
"Ask your mother.""
I turned.
"Mom?""
Eleanor's face crumpled.
Before she could answer, Richard lunged toward the fireplace.
The officers tackled him.
A sharp crack echoed through the room as something fell behind the mantel.
Arthur reached into the opening and pulled out a sealed envelope.
The handwriting on the front was unmistakable.
*For Marcus. Only after the truth about Catherine is known.*
My hands shook as I opened it.
Inside was a letter from my father.
And beneath it was a second document.
A birth record.
My birth record.
The name of my biological father had been covered by a strip of black ink.
But the original carbon impression remained visible beneath it.
Arthur tilted the page toward the light.
Then he whispered:
"Marcus, your father wasn't Robert.""
May you like
I stared at the paper.
The name beneath the ink was Richard Hale.
